Can dreams help you make decisions about moving or getting another job?

Being Conservative Is Hard on My Head

A 36-year-old fine arts professor dreamt that he was on the patio of a Mexican restaurant. There was a wasp’s nest above the kidney shaped bar. Suddenly, a wasp flew down and stung him in the head. The dream shifted to him listening to a waittress. She was telling him about a long sordid affair she had with a professor.

Dream Interpretation

This professor recently received job offers from colleges in Ohio and California. WASP also stands for White Anglo Saxon Protestant. I asked him which college was more conservative. He replied that the college in Ohio was much more conservative and he did not know if it would tolerate his avant-garde teaching style and research. I asked him what he associated with Mexican restaurants, and he replied California. I asked him what was the biggest mistake he ever made in his field, and he replied that he regretted a decision not to attend a college in California. That she, the waittress had a sordid affair with a professor indicated that his emotions (the waitress) had been untrue to his intellectual decisions (the male professor)—this was highlighted by the fact that he regretted not going to college in California/

The dream voted in the direction of the college in California. His subconscious exclaimed that a conservative atmosphere was hard on his head and thinking. A restaurant in a dream nurtures one psychologically, and the dream is saying that, for him, California is much more likely to be nurturing.

The female waittress is a part of his work emotions. In dreams, a waittress is often seen as “one who waits.” He told me consciously that his biggest career mistake was not attending a learning institution in California. The waittress is talking about an emotional mistake with a professor. The dream is warning him about making sincere and solid emotional connections. The dream is screaming that he needs to attend a learning institution in California.

What does it mean when you find money in a barn for the family you babysit for?

Getting Energy from Doing What You Love
Getting Energy from Doing What You Love

Dream 390: Old MacDonald had a Barn Full of Energy

A woman had the following dream:

“I dreamed that the family I babysit for (I am friends with the mother) had lost like a friend or family member and a very large sum of cash was owed/given to them. The family drove me to the place to pick it up because they needed help getting it. We go to this farm looking space and I walk into the barn/ware-house type building. It was only being lit from the natural lighting coming from outside but it was enough for me to see this huge trunk in the middle of the room that i needed to use to put the money in for the family, there was huge wads of cash and single bills scattered about the floor. I filled up the trunk as much as I could, and left the rest there, as I made my way back to the family’s car. Just because I was the only one in there taking the money for the family, it felt in a way like I was stealing, but i was only doing what I was told to do, I think I felt odd being the one having to go get the money instead of one of the family members doing it themselves, but they said they needed me to help get it for them. When I got to the car, a man who was following me, walked up to us (tan, dark hair and handsome; wearing overalls), said sorry he was not in the room with me to help out and he had work elsewhere to do, and he brought me the remaining cash that was for the family. Then we all drove away.”

My Interpretation

In dreams, money is energy. The barn is a natural and I want to say innocent place where your instincts (animals) are nurtured.

It sounds like you want to give all of the instinctive energy you can to the family you babysit for and want to give even more, but hold back wondering if you should, but then say it is okay because that is what I am supposed to do.

You get the energy free of charge from the universe by doing what you do for this family and you even get paid for doing it (no reason to feel guilty about being paid). The heroic action part of yourself feels that you could give even more energy to this family because it is nothing but good. What a country!

The tall, dark and handsome man is the representation of your own heroic masculine archetype which is often the initiator of therapeutic action, of things that are good for you. This part wholeheartedly wants you to feel uninhibited in giving personal energy to the family (the energy of the universe is supplied to you without your asking for it and this is a good thing for you and for the family).

What does a gigantic silver horse with a gigantic silver man riding it mean in a dream?

Pie in the sky
Pie in the sky

Dream 351: Pie in the Sky, By and By

A man dreamed he was looking at a gigantic silver horse in the sky with a gigantic silver figured man riding it. They were about three stories high. Large white fluffy clouds covered their lower half.

Interpretation

There are several remarkable things about this dream. First, the figures appear in the sky. Things appearing in the sky probably are related to the dreamer’s higher aspirations.

Silver is a precious metal. Some say it could represent wealth. Each character in the dream is considered to be a different part of the dreamer’s mind at the first level of dream interpretation.

A horse is an animal and represents your instincts. Specifically, a horse in particular represents your energy or ability to accomplish what you want to accomplish in life, your horsepower. If this is a predictive dream, it was predicting that the dreamer would do well financially and otherwise.

If it is a dream of desire, and I suspect it is a dream of desire, his aspirations for what he wanted to accomplish materially are very high. Clouds emphasize how high his goals are on the one hand, while also indicating that his plans may be in the formative stage and are “cloudy.” All in all, it looks like a dream of what he wanted to carry out.

It is predicting he has the horsepower to do it. His ground game needs to be worked out as his plans could be in the sky and need to be grounded in reality. Once he works things out pragmatically, the sky is the limit.

What does a young woman and an old lady carrying your girlfriend away mean in a dream?

tmp_6868-illusion-878881958Is this a beautiful young woman or an old lady? It depends upon your point of view.

Dream 350: My Love Gets Carried Away

An adult man dreamed that his girlfriend was being carried away by a young woman and an old lady. Something kept him from being able to reach his girlfriend to stop them from carrying her away.

Interpretation

Each character in the dream can represent a part of the dreamer’s mind. Women tend to go with the dreamers emotions. Young attractive women typically represent beautiful emotions.

An old lady is typically thought of as being a Crone which is an archetype of wisdom in old age and experience. An archetype is a pattern of thought that is repetitive throughout human consciousness. This dream is about how the dreamer’s emotions could get carried away.

He seemingly fears losing a lover after he has invested all of his emotions in her. His greatest fear probably is that this would happen and there was nothing he could do about it. It sounds like he is worried about losing the love of his life.

The Wounded Healer

Much of Life Is a Healing Process
Much of Life Is a Healing Process

Dream 295:An adult man dreamed that he was a white healer. He had healing balls of energy that appeared in his hands which he could use to heal others. When he touched the patient, the energy was transmuted to the healed in a dazzling display of spiritual/physical power. He then dreamed that he healed himself.

Interpretation

The Wounded Healer is a major archetype, a pattern of thought that recurs in many people’s dreams throughout the ages. White is the most spiritual color . Circular and round objects often represent the soul since they have no beginning and no end.

The dream is all about healing. The dream implies that by healing others, the dreamer will heal himself; and by healing himself, the dreamer will heal others. This model is essentially the root of self-help groups like Alcoholics Anonymous, i.e., someone who had previous experience being wounded like you were was more likely to be empathic and knowledgable.

What Does a Fox Mean in Dreams?

A White Spiritual Fox
A White Spiritual Fox

Dream Image 294: I thought I would explain what my namesake means in a dream. First off, animals represent our instinctive drives. A fox is a wily cunning strategist who thinks outside the box. As such, native indigenous people often associated the Fox with the trickster archetype.

The trickster is a major archetype or pattern of thought in dreams. He typically makes impossible situations work by going outside what has been officially authorized. He bends the formal rules to satisfy impossible sometimes dictatorial expectations, i.e., he/she is tricky.

He is a clever sharp intelligent playful and flexible artisan who designs ways to get around onerous rules. The Fox frequently defies historic conventions for the good of humanity. There is a charming Apache legend that the Fox was responsible for bringing fire to people.

In the story, the Fox breaks the rules of the universe by somehow stealing fire from fireflies. Again, one would think that such a feat was impossible, but the trickster fox somehow makes it happen. As a punishment for his theft, the Fox was never allowed to use fire for himself. His deed ended up helping mankind but consigned the benefactor thief to the cold.

One never wants to forget the importance of slang or common meanings in dreams. It should also be remembered that “a fox” can represent an attractive woman/man. To be called “a fox” is to be called an intelligent tricky and good-looking beneficial manipulator.

The color white is the most spiritual color there is. A white fox is a spiritual master cleverly working within, but not strictly according to, the laws of the universe. I rather like my namesake.

My Attempt to Change Died

Dream 280: Change Died
baby-found-alive-at-chinese-funeral-home-2-days-after-being-pronounced-dead
A 48-year-old woman dreamed that she bought the house of her son’s mother-in-law. When she arrived at this house, there was a dead baby in a casket with large funeral candles on each side of the casket.

Interpretation

This woman was hyper-critical of her son. His mother-in-law had a troubled background similar to his mother’s personal history. The mother-in-law was, nevertheless, relatively calm, more diplomatic, and less critical than the dreamer.
A house can represent the dreamer because it is the framework out of which one lives. That the dreamer bought the house indicates that the dreamer is aspiring to be a different person, to be more like her son’s mother-in-law. The deceased baby is not good news.

Each character in a dream represents a part of the dreamer’s personality at the first level of dream interpretation. A baby represents a new part of the personality or psyche that the dreamer tried to develop. So a baby represents personal growth on the part of the dreamer.

That the baby is dead signals that her attempt to be different, to be more like the calmer mother-in-law, failed. That it was an attempt to change was highlighted by the funeral candles. Candles imply fire, and fire represents change because fire changes matter into energy.

It is perfect that they were funeral candles. Funeral candles are typically unlit. The unlit candles emphasized that no change had occurred. That it is a funeral scene gives some hope because the dreamer saw her lack of change as a real loss. The dreamer is in mourning which suggests that being more like the mother-in-law personality-wise was something that the dreamer really wanted.

Dream 269: Saving Face

Send in the clowns
Send in the clowns

Dream 269:

A 32-year-old woman dreamed of an image of her face with a huge number of stitches which covered her face almost like a mask.

Interpretation
Her job was in security for a federal building. She had to thoroughly search each person who entered the building. It often was necessary to be assertive and even abrupt with difficult people.

In dreams, a mask is it defense that hides who you really are. She thought that she had to put on a stern façade which was not like her real personality. The image in this dream brings to mind the saying of “saving face.” She thought that to heal herself she would have to quit the job because it was covering who she really was.

She disliked the scars which the job forced on her personality. She felt the job was ruining the image she had of herself. Consciously, she felt the job was good paying and have good benefits; however, she knew that her subconscious would eventually insist she leave the job.

But Mom…I Feel a Movement in the Force

13.-yoda-2_big

Dream 264: An eight year old boy dreamt that Yoda, the wise little old man alien Buddha philosopher from the movie Star Wars, was throwing all personal care items, like soap, toothpaste shampoo, etc., from the top of his mother’s bureau onto her bedroom floor.
Interpretation: He objected strenuously to his mother insisting that he regularly brush his teeth, wash his hands, comb his hair, take showers, etc. He was using a very creative version of the archetype of the wise old man to deliver a message. An archetype is a pattern of thought handed down through the generations by human consciousness.
Archetypes are propelled in culture and can be up to twenty to forty percent of the dream’s content. Jung thought we each had a personal subconscious which was connected to an overriding collective unconscious. This collective unconscious was created by culture and sustained and passed on by human consciousness.
Children most often have dreams of desire or want which are dreams of the way they wished life actually was. This creative child had the desire that wise Yoda would talk some sense to his mother. Moreover, the wise Yoda should cast away the personal care items so that his mother could finally see that her son’s protests about maintaining personal hygiene were correct.
The wisdom of the universe was dramatically expressing the child’s wish that he be freed from brushing, washing and cleaning. His dream desired that his mother finally see the prudence of his cleanliness protests. In his dreams, he felt that he did not need no stinking toothbrush. Further, he had Luke Skywalker’s advisor prove his point of view.

You Are So Far Gone!

images(2)Dream 263: A 19-year-old man dreamed that he was in a parked car at night. One of his friends from high school, David, tapped on the passenger window. He asked the dreamer to come out of the car.

The dreamer proceeded to the back of a car and simultaneously saw his best girlfriend from high school and his worst and most evil girlfriend walking hand in hand down the sidewalk in front of the car. When the dreamer went to the back of the car, David hugged him and said “You are so far gone!”

Interpretation:Being in a car parked at night means that you have been subconsciously passive. Night time goes with inactivity and passivity. Darkness usually represents the subconscious while the brightness of day represents more conscious and more active parts of the psyche.

Each character in the dream represents a different part of the dreamer’s mind or psyche. Men tend to go with more active parts of the mind while women usually represent more emotional parts of the psyche. He was being beckoned by an active part of his psyche, David, to be more active.

Two characters in a dream hugging indicates that those two parts of the psyche are integrating. The dream wanted him to integrate action into his life more.

The good girlfriend represented more positive emotional parts of himself while the evil girlfriend represented his shadow emotions.

He was very resistant to recognizing and using shadow emotions in his life. In therapy, it was clear he needed to use some of the aggressive shadow emotions because these emotions end up being your “get up and go.” It was a good sign that his positive emotions (the good girlfriend) was holding hands with shadow emotions (the evil girlfriend) because this indicated some beginning integration.

This statement that “You are so far gone!” was actually a compliment. It meant that his new outlook of being willing to be more assertive in seeking his goals was firmly established. He would never return to being his old self.

Like a Rhinestone Rooster

rhinestone rooster

Dream 261: A 28-year-old woman dreamed that she and other airport security were holding back a crowd of faceless people who were coming through the walls of a terminal liquor bar. She then envisioned the image of a rooster arrayed with sparkling jewelry and rhinestones. When she paid rapt attention to it, the rooster died.

Interpretation: She was an airport policewoman. She was bored with her job. She had a few drinks each day after work.

Each character in the dream is a part of the dreamer’s psyche at the first level. Faceless people usually represent parts of the mind that the dreamer does not know. Her superego or conscience is worried that her drinking to reduce her boredom may be unleashing more unruly parts of her mind.

The message of the rhinestone rooster is clear. The rooster is over-adorned to the point of being ridiculous. The dream is dramatically saying “Don’t get too cocky or it could be the end of you.”

She recently felt conflicted because her supervisor praised her work while she internally felt bored. She felt bored, but the dream may be warning her to not go along with her instinct (the animal instinct, the rooster) to show off (which may be the attitude of her subconscious toward her considering quitting her job). This latter view is speculative because it is at the second or interpersonal level of dream interpretation where accuracy drops because only the dreamer has full knowledge of details at the second level.

The Shadow Offers a Gift

DSC_0005Dream 256: The Shadow Offers a Gift

Dream 256: A 34-year-old woman dreamt that she was in bed with her ex-husband. She heard a knock at their bedroom door and she went to answer. Once she opened the door she felt a little jello hands trying to pull her gently out the door. She then saw a dark figure lean over and place a gift at her feet.

Interpretation: Her husband had been calling the shots regarding custody of the children and having her pay support to him. She recently decided after therapy to become assertive and get court orders that made her an equal parent in the relationship. The figure at the door was her shadow trying to move her gently away from her ex. She decided it was time to change her relationship with him.

The little jello hands are emphasizing her shadow is not trying to force her into action but his giving her encouragement to move away from her ex. Her shadow then appeared directly to place a gift at her feet. She was going to court the next day and it was expected by everyone that it would be settled on much more favorable terms towards her so that she was an equal.

The shadow was encouraging her because she was making moves away from the manipulative ex-husband. The shadow was surmising that she would receive a gift by the way of the court orders the next day which turned out to be accurate. She more or less lived happily ever after.

Shadow Quote

downloadAlex, a reader at amazon, highlighted the following quote from my book.

Alex highlighted:

The Shadow is only dangerous when other structures are not available to positively direct its behavior. If one is not in contact at all with his or her Shadow, there is danger that it may become frustrated and take over the personality because the rest of the person is not considering the Shadow’s input. The Shadow can be dangerous in this circumstance because reasonable limits are not being put upon it by other subconscious entities. When you’ve had it up to your ears in frustration, the Shadow will remove you from the situation by whatever means are available. This accounts for the situations where you did something in your own best interest in such a dramatic way that later you can hardly believe you did it. The Shadow is protective in focusing on self-survival and the person’s own best self-interests.

There is so much more in the book at http://www.drstevenfox.com about the shadow which is often key to change.

My Jets Are Burned Out

images(2)Dream 257: A 28-year-old woman dreamed that her husband was mobilized to serve in Iraq. She then dreamt that the jet he piloted crashed into the airport where she worked.

Interpretation– She dreaded her job at the airport which was tedious, regimented, and boring. She had these same feelings toward the military. Her husband represents an action part of her psyche.

The jet crashing into the airport was advising her to find a different job because she was “burned out” and getting ready to crash regarding her job. This was the meaning of the dream at the first level, where every character is symbolic of either an action part (male) or emotional part (female) of the mind.

The dream was a predictive dream as well as being a symbolic dream. Two weeks after she had this dream, her husband was mobilized to serve in Iraq in real life. This is the interpersonal level of the dream. When both levels are true, which is usually true, we say that the dream condenses on itself.

How can dreams be predictive of the future? I believe there is something inherent in the nature of human consciousness that gets transmitted to all of humanity. There are undiscovered quantum physics principles which will one day explain this phenomenon. It may be true as emphasized in Eastern religions that “we are all one.”

This dream was interpreted using principles from my book at http://www.drstevenfox.com

Dream 256: When I Get That Feeling, I Need Spiritual Healing

angel-09-250140612_std(2)

Dream 256: A 52-year-old woman dreamed that she had sex with a Catholic priest. She then saw the image of a Catholic nun. She then saw the image of a female Reike energy healer that she knew. This healer looked amazingly attractive and had glorious angel wings.

Interpretation– This dream is all about spirituality. She was raised Catholic. Her having sex with a priest indicates that she wants to actively integrate spirituality into her life (men are associated with action parts of the psyche while women tend to go with more emotional parts). The nun image was present because she emotionally felt she needed more spirituality in her life.

The female Reike healer had an amazing life story. She spent seven years in a wheelchair before healing herself with energy work. The image of the healer with angel wings is numinous (inspiring transcendental sacred awe in the beholder). She was amazingly attractive because she was an ideal woman, an anima figure, which is associated with healing. She wanted an active and inspired spirituality that helped heal people. The dream was symbolic of spirituality instilled in her youth that she wanted to activate to heal others through Divine power.

Will I Ever Trust a Man Again?

owning-a-dogDream 255: A 28-year-old woman dreamt that her abusive boyfriend hit her dog over the head with a shovel. The dog was dead. He was burying the dog. She wanted to stop the burial because the dog might still be alive.

Interpretation– Each person and animal in a dream represents part of the person’s mind. Animals typically represent basic instincts. Dogs in particular usually represent internal tendencies to be loyal and protective. The dream was saying that her experience with her abusive boyfriend had damaged her ability to feel protected and loyal towards men. That the dog might still be alive indicated that her trust of men was damaged, but that she might be able to heal from this traumatic experience.

A Messy Affair

images(4)
Dream 250:A 42-year-old man dreamt that he was being held down by his wife while a large mare urinated massive loads of urine on his face.

Interpretation– He was debating whether to return to a long-term affair. He did not want to leave his wife because of his young daughter. He felt conflicted, but felt that his life was entwined with the woman he was having an affair with. He thought it was likely that he would not stay married to his wife if he did not have some outlet for his sexuality.

Horses often represent female sexual power. The wife in his dream was his emotions, as a significant female partner and especially a wife represents primary current emotions. In dreams, a person, animal, or spirit is a part of the dreamer’s psyche. Men tend to go with actions while women go more often with emotional parts of the mind.

Water is almost invariably emotion in dreams, and urine is negative emotions. The dream is screaming that he is forcing himself to endure negative emotions to experience female sexual power (the horse). There is a price to pay emotionally for being involved in the affair.

Stop Hurting Your Boyfriend

DREAM 240: Stop Hurting Your Boyfriend and Get a Job

A 28-year-old woman dreamt that she was teleported to Pakistan and met a Pakistani woman in a tent. The Pakistani woman was very kind, attractive, and personable. They talked in the tent for a long time. The dreamer saw images of lips all around her. She then saw the Pakistani woman kiss her on the cheek.

The dream then shifted to her being a passenger in a helicopter piloted by a policeman. They went over major mountains until they arrived home safely.

Dream 240–Interpretation

The dreamer had a Pakistani woman friend who was emotionally mature and considerate. The dreamer recently was inconsiderate and hurtful towards her boyfriend. The images of lips all around your indicated that she needed to be more careful in what she said. The Pakistani woman kissing her on the cheek indicated that she emotionally wanted to integrate the Pakistanis woman’s qualities (emotions) into her own personality.

A policeman often represents the heroic masculine archetype. The heroic masculine is the part of a dreamer’s personality that typically effects therapeutic change in the dreamers life. A police officer also represents the superego or conscience to some degree. She felt guilty that she lived at home with her mother and had no job while her mother work hard at a low paying job.

Mountains often represent obstacles in the dreamers life. The challenge that the dreamer had to surmount was getting a job. Males are typically action figures and the heroic masculine is almost always very helpful.

The dream indicated that the action part of herself, the male heroic masculine, was going to help her surmount the dreamer’s goal of getting a job. She was getting ready to fly in a controlled and very practical way. She could decide exactly where she wanted to land, which is the reason a helicopter was used by the dream.

Kubla Khan: Great Poem from a Dream

Kubla Khan was a great poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge which was inspired by a dream. Enjoy!
kubla khan
Author: Samuel Taylor Coleridge. 1772–1834

Kubla Khan

IN Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea. 5
So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round:
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills
Where blossom’d many an incense-bearing tree;
And here were forests ancient as the hills, 10
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.

But O, that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover!
A savage place! as holy and enchanted
As e’er beneath a waning moon was haunted 15
By woman wailing for her demon-lover!
And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,
As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,
A mighty fountain momently was forced;
Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst 20
Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,
Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher’s flail:
And ‘mid these dancing rocks at once and ever
It flung up momently the sacred river.
Five miles meandering with a mazy motion 25
Through wood and dale the sacred river ran,
Then reach’d the caverns measureless to man,
And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean:
And ‘mid this tumult Kubla heard from far
Ancestral voices prophesying war! 30

The shadow of the dome of pleasure
Floated midway on the waves;
Where was heard the mingled measure
From the fountain and the caves.
It was a miracle of rare device, 35
A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice!

A damsel with a dulcimer
In a vision once I saw:
It was an Abyssinian maid,
And on her dulcimer she play’d, 40
Singing of Mount Abora.
Could I revive within me,
Her symphony and song,
To such a deep delight ‘twould win me,
That with music loud and long, 45
I would build that dome in air,
That sunny dome! those caves of ice!
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware! Beware!
His flashing eyes, his floating hair! 50
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread,
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.

Angel Message

archangel_raphael21
At the height of my worst multiple sclerosis (MS) symptoms, I asked my wife to have a dream about how I should handle my MS. The next morning my wife described a dream in which an angel sang four rules that I needed to follow:

(1) Be non-judgemental. This rule was primary  and covered 70 percent of what I needed to do to improve my symptoms.
(2) Show inner beauty with the emphasis on emotion.
(3) Mirror the earth (follow natural cycles like getting up with the sun).
(4) Glorify the transfigurement. This was the most spiritual part of the message. The emphasis was on the product and not the process. I believe now, in hindsight, that it meant be thankful for the positive changes and the resulting increase in function.
Recalling these rules, which I lived by, gives me chills even today. It is more than fifteen years later and the MS is in full remission.

While dreams can portray the past, it is the future they can help shape the most. Use “Dreams: Guide to the Soul” at http://www.drstevenfox.com as a map to help find the future your subconscious wants you to have. (This was the World Press photo of the year.)

To dream of the person you would like to be is to waste the person you are. Unknown

Be who you can be.

You be You.

Dream Quote

“Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.”                         Khalil Gibran

Work Lowers My Consciousness

Dream 186: Work Pancakes My Consciousness

A 44-year-old man dreamt that he returned to work after taking a leave of absence.  During that leave, he attended therapy and felt that his consciousness was in a better place.  When he returned to work he dreamt that he was on an upper floor when the skyscraper began to pancake like the buildings of the World Trade Center during 911.  With each thud of another floor piling and pancaking on, he felt emotionally uncomfortable, but physically unhurt, even when the floor he was on completely collapsed.

Dream 186–Interpretation

A change in floors represents a change in consciousness.  For example, a person going up ten floors in a skyscraper implies that his consciousness improved in major ways.  He felt that he had reached a considerably higher level of consciousness during his leave from work and his work in therapy.  When he returned to work, he found many of the same old habits that caused him trouble in the past resurfaced.  The pancaking of the floors was a warning of how his consciousness was collapsing at work.  That he was physically unhurt during this whole process showed that the dream believed he could repair the damage.

Saving My Soul

Dream 185: Saving My Soul

A 35-year-old man dreamt that one of his high school friends who later became an alcoholic jumped off a cliff into a river. The dreamer then jumped off the cliff and found himself in murky river water. He saw a liquor bottle at the bottom of the river whose neck was stuck in the bottom of the river.  The part facing up was without a bottom and was a circle which was very sharp. He touched the circle with the palm of his right hand. The sharp glass etched a perfect round and luminous circle in his palm.

Dream 185 Interpretation

The dreamer was struggling with substance abuse. He recently was getting into major trouble every time that he drank. The dream was issuing a stern warning that he was falling off the same cliff his alcoholic friend experienced and was in murky emotional waters as a result. It warned that he would go to the bottom if he reached for the bottle.

The right goes with consciousness and hands are used to do tasks.  The dream warns that his ability to carry out tasks would be hurt (cut) if he drank. The round and luminous circle warns that substance abuse literally held the key to the fate of his soul.

The circle emblazoned on his palm was representative of his soul because it has no beginning and it has no end. The dream was saying that the fate of his soul was in his hands. Hands are used to do things and the dream was using cut hands to emphasize that drinking would affect his ability to carry out tasks.

Addicted to Love

Dream 182: Addicted to Love

A 36-year-old man dreamed he was meeting with his Tai Chi Master.  The Master was exalting the dreamer to live by the precepts of Tai Chi.  This philosophy emphasized measured thinking before taking action.

The dreamer heard an overriding voice that urged him to “Stay Here!”  The dreamer ignored the voice and went off with a prostitute.  He was making out with the woman when he looked to his left and saw his new live-in girlfriend.  The girlfriend was looking at him like she depended on him for everything.  She had also gained 200 pounds.

Dream 182–Interpretation

He had serial disaster relationships where the woman he was involved with depended upon him for everything.  He was trying to take it slower with his new live-in girlfriend.  The Tai Chi Master represented the shift in his actions in relationships toward deliberate and thought out movement.

His lust with the prostitute represented his tendency to become overindulging with women he was sexually involved.  That the girlfriend becomes an obese giant while he is making out with the prostitute reflected his indulging dependence within himself and within the relationship.  The relationships in the past depended excessively upon upon himself which he expected back then.

The suggestion of this dream was that he needed to stay with deliberate and thought out actions in relationships to prevent creating an overly dependent glutton within himself and within relationships.

What’s happening?

There is a recent upsurge in sales of the book at amazon.com. The book “Dreams: Guide to the Soul” is rated fifth under dream books for both mental health and new age dream books. I am shocked. I am pleased that people that read it tell me that they “get it” as I tried to be complete without pretending I was in graduate school again where I could barely understand the articles I wrote myself :^)  drstevenfox.com

They Blinded Me with Science

People love to interpret dreams. Many times, they are close to the meaning, but have difficulty because it is difficult to be objective about your own dreams. When you interpret dreams as a therapist, it pays to take an incisive analytic view of dreams that assumes that each living thing or spirit or being in a dream is part of the dreamer’s psyche. Taking this point of view agrees with the recent movie Inception with Leonardo Decapprio. This first level of dream is the most difficult, but is often the most rewarding. Accuracy of dream interpretation at this level can be as high as eighty or ninety percent. Accuracy of therapeutic interpretation often drops to about fifty percent at the second and interpersonal level of interpretation. The therapist can seldom know enough of the details of the dreamer’s life, unless the person has been in psychotherapy for a long time. Dreams often do not mean what they look like at face value. Let’s consider an example. Suppose that a thirty-two-year-old man dreams that an alcoholic he despised in high school dies. What might this mean at the first level? Any and all sincere responses will be viewed as valuable and will be respected because as we exchange information, both of us can learn important information. So what may it mean when a man you despise dies in a dream?
