Dream 178: I Never Left You A 43-year-old woman dreamt that she was looking into a mirror. Suddenly, her deceased father walked through the mirror and was hugging her. The dream was vivid beyond words as she felt that she actually saw, heard, smelled and touched her father. She said, “Daddy, don’t leave me.” He replied in a vivid, gently commanding and overriding voice, “I never have.” Dream 178 Interpretation This dream was a vision dream. Vision dreams seldom need any interpretation. There were several indicators that this was a vision dream. First of all, the shear vividness of the dream is remarkable. All of the senses were involved. It is infrequent that a dreamer senses she can feel, touch and smell the deceased loved one. She was grieving the death of her father. She was very emotionally close to her father who died only a month prior to this vision dream. As Jungian analyst Geri Grubbs Ph.D. pointed out in her book, Bereavement Dreaming and the Individuating Soul, deceased loved ones tend to appear in one’s dreams intensely for up to two years after the person’s death. The fact that she saw her father walk out of a mirror further supports the vision nature of the dream. Popular cinema always insisted that one could not see a ghost in a mirror. The dream vision was emphasizing the vision nature of this dream. This dream needed no interpretation. It is what it was.

Is this a dream of a visitation from a loved one in a dream like “The Sixth Sense” movie or is the dream symbolic? In what follows, it is usually more comprehensive to consider the dream to be both:
Dream 203: Take Care of Your Little Boy
A 34-year-old man dreamt that his recently deceased mother was hugging his son who was six years old. The mother was nodding approvingly toward the dreamer as she hugged his son.
Dream 203 Interpretation
The dreamer noted that this dream seemed almost real. So real that we could classify this dream as a vision dream. Mother in the dream was his mother introject since each character in a dream represents a part of the dreamer’s mind at the first level of dream interpretation.
If we look at this dream symbolically, his emotions were giving approval as to how he was taking care of his son because the mother introject is often the foundation of emotions. The dreamer recently stopped negative activities and dedicated himself to being a good father to his son. His subconscious approved.
Mom would be proud. If we consider this to be a vision dream, then it simply is what it is. Which one is it?
