How is the shadow in dreams related to death?

Attending my wife’s funeral the other day, it struck me that death is the ultimate shadow following us through life. We are often motivated to accomplish things in a timely manner because of awareness that death is our ultimate fate. This is especially true as one ages.

The shadow is the part of our personality that everyone needs to protect us. It will do anything to protect the dreamer, which is why other parts of the dreamer’s personality need to moderate the Shadow’s response to threats.

One wants to remember that the shadow contains parts of us that we have not used, as well as aggressive parts. If I decided not to become a priest, there is a priest in my shadow that I may want to use at some point later in my life.
Dreams very much use stereotypes which is why Shadows are black in dreams. Plus the fact, shadows are indeed black. Plus the fact, the darkness indicates the subconscious. But one does not want to confuse the color of the Shadow as having any racial inferences.

In fact, when you have a black person in a dream, I believe that indicates that it is a very Soulful part of the person. That is because images from the collective subconscious come from any thought any man in history has ever had. Consciousness is connected in ways that we do not understand, but The older some day science will.

The deeper the thought, the more likely it is archetypal and ingrained in the collective unconscious to which every person is connected.

Black people in dreams are very Soulful parts of the subconscious because man began in Africa in tribes where the first archetypal images, where the deepest archetypal images, where the most soulful images, were created because they were the very first archetypal images. A black person in a dream is soulful because it harkens back to the day when our ancestors were gathered around camp fires in Africa. Common language recognizes this soul connection. For instance, we even call it “soul music,” do we not?

Black people in dreams indicate spirituality in dreams. A higher sense of soul is being summoned usually. The shadow is the part of the personality that protects us in life, and gives way in death to eternal life.

What might blackbirds, sleeping in a dream, and animals mean in a dream?

270eaad9c52be112b40cd94b1d301663

Dream 473: Shadow Blackbird

A woman had the following dream:

“While sleeping I had a dream and in the dream I was sleeping. I was awakened by a loud noise.  When I looked out the window, I saw several black birds, huge ones, and several very large animals. The animals were like the size you would see in a Harry Potter movie. The animals were surrounding my house protecting me. They created a wall so no one could bother me.

What is that all about?”

Interpretation

Birds typically signal freedom, “free as a bird.” The blackbirds often goes with shadow energy with secrets and mystery. Animals usually represent your instincts in the dream.

That you are sleeping in a dream usually means that the dream is addressing subconscious issues. To have many animals around you is a good sign in a dream because it means you have the energy to protect yourself from Shadow elements.

You need Shadow energy (our “get up and go”) to accomplish goals, but you have other parts of your energy that will protect you from misusing Shadow energy. I do not know you, so take the above with a grain of salt as I do not know the context.

Dreams often point out how much energy you have at http://www.drstevenfox.com

Enlightenment Is In the Darkness

Most times you have to find what is causing the darkness…

“Enlightenment consists not merely in the seeing of luminous shapes and visions, but in making the darkness (occult) visible. The latter procedure is more difficult and therefore, unpopular.”

What does a tarantula and a turtle represent in a dream?

p02rnfq8

Dream 461: Enough Planning already

A man had the following dream:

I had a dream I was sleeping on a couch. Then I looked at the floor and I saw a turtle trying to get away from a tarantula. The turtle was too slow and the tarantula started to attack the turtle. Any idea of what this means ?

Interpretation

Animals at the first level usually represent the dreamer’s instincts. A turtle represents defensiveness because it’s surrounded by a shell. A turtle also represents slow but steady progress. A spider usually represents planning in the sense that it builds webs to catch its victims. A tarantula is aggressive often.

I would say your subconscious wants you to aggressively pursue some goal and not take the slow and gradual approach for now. I’m taking it that the trantula caught the turtle. I am guessing that your subconscious is getting impatient with a slow gradual defensive approach and wants you to plan forceful action.

What could being chased in dream by a killer mean?

dreams-about-being-chased

Dream 436

A woman dreamed something was chasing her in a dream that wanted to kill her.

Dream 436

This is a common dream. Often the thing that is chasing you is your own shadow. We reject the Shadow and want nothing to do with it and so we run away from it.

We think of this Shadow is being aggressive, but not necessarily. Anything you have rejected or even not used is probably in your shadow. If I decided not to become a priest, there’s a priest in my Shadow.

Many times the shadow is chasing a person in their dreams because we do not consciously want to recognize it. Often the shadow is trying to get your attention to show you that there is some part of the shadow that you may want to use that could be helpful in a given situation for your survival.

Each character in a dream is a part of the dreamer’s mind at the first level of dream interpretation. Death in dreams usually means change. It means that a part of you needs to die psychologically, not literally.

What this means is that there’s a part of your personality that needs to change– that needs to be moved down your priority list of parts of your mind and personality to use. Part of your personality needs to die so that another part of your personality can be moved up the priority list and use some more or maybe even you might use a part of your personality that you’ve never used before.

So the upshot of all this is that your Shadow probably is chasing you to try to get you to use a part of it to help yourself, but you don’t want anything to do with it because you completely reject your Shadow and run.

Usually the solution, that I have found helpful in therapy, is to have people consciously say to themselves that they’re going to turn around and face the thing that’s chasing them the next time they have a dream like this. If you keep repeating this each night before you go to sleep, there’s a good probability that it will happen. The subconscious responds to repetition.

What do Tigers, trucks, kitchens, upstairs and a leash mean in a dream?

widescreen_tiger-wide

Dream 429: Keeping My Shadow on a Leash

A woman had the following dream:

“I don’t remember all of the dream but it was a tiger in my dream.  The tiger was already like a pet in the dream, the tiger was already a part of the house.  I think I was cooking fish or salmon.    When I went downstairs with the food, the tiger was following me and looking strange with his mouth.  It scared me so I ran upstairs to my family.

I was telling them, “okay, we got to get rid of this tiger because I don’t feel safe anymore.” So the Tiger followed me up the steps and went into my closet and fell on my brother that is deceased and my oldest brother’s talking.  They went into the next room, and when my deceased brother came out, he said it won’t happen again.  He said, “I promise this won’t happen ever again about the tiger” as if he were the one who brought the tiger there, but then tiger was gone.  Then I was outside, I was like near a road.  A truck went by and, lo and behold, it was a tiger laying on the back of the truck….

Interpretation

Animals usually represent our instincts in dreams. A tiger is a very powerful symbol. It usually is good to have powerful animals in your dreams because it means you have a lot of instinctive energy in your subconscious.

This tiger may represent the shadow side of your instincts to some degree, but it is a very well-controlled Shadow. You have it on a leash. I believe part of the concern is you don’t want to feed the energy of the Shadow for fear it might get out of hand and harm you.

A house can represent the dreamer to some extent because it is a framework out of which you live. When you move from upstairs to downstairs you’re basically moving from your brain to the kitchen which is basically a place of nurture and creativity. You expressly do not want to feed the Tiger. You don’t want to give more energy to your Shadow side even though it’s well-controlled.

I am guessing that at least one of the brothers represents the heroic masculine. This is good news because it’s used to represent a spiritual dimension since one of them is deceased. Your heroic masculine archetype, the part of you the does helpful and positive things for yourself and others, apologizes for bringing the spirit of the tiger to your consciousness to the point where it scares you. One might say it scares you to death almost.

The dream ends with the deceased brother promising you that it won’t happen again. But you know the way Shadows are, they just don’t go easy. You see the tiger pass by on the truck after you think you’ve gotten rid of it.

The dream is reassuring you that you can’t just get rid of your shadow. You need your shadow, particularly in situations like work which I think is represented by the truck because trucks usually do work-related things. Your Shadow is also your get-up-and-go, it just needs contact with other parts your personality so it doesn’t get out of control.

What does a three headed snake, groceries, and your daughter hiding behind you mean in a dream?

3-headed-cobra
Dream 422: Decisions I hate to make

My daughter had a dream that she had went into a bag to pull out some grocery and all of a sudden a three-headed snake pop up out the bag and her daughter got scared and start hiding behind her and she tried to chop off the snake heads and it wouldn’t chop off. What is the meaning of this dream…

Interpretation

In dreams groceries (food) is psychological support or nurture usually. A snake represents change because it’s one of the few animals to shed its skin. The change probably involves three difficult choices or people the dreamer has to use their head to select from– since she was trying to cut off the head of the snake which also implies that she really doesn’t want to decide, but because she could not cut the heads off, she must decide.

It is probably an emotional decision as her daughter might represent her inner Emotional Self that she wants to hide. This is taking her daughter as the average little girl and assuming that she has no problems or outstanding characteristics which would influence what she is trying to hide emotionally. This is said without knowing her and represents possible guesses that occurred to me off the top of my head.

What does a dark robed figure and a group of 12 people mean in a dream?

tmp_16088-07_don_giovani_m1302493080

Dream 384:Do not judge me because I do not follow you blindly

This is a statue that’s in Prague, however, I once had a dream with these beings in it that looked a lot like this. There were about 12 of these faceless robed beings sitting around a table in a large stadium. Thousands, maybe millions of people gathered there to see them but no one spoke a word. Everyone there was marked. They were waiting on the newcomers to come down the aisle and pledge to them but I left the building. Some people I knew were outside roaming around as if they were lost and when I yelled out to get their attention the town began to crumble. I could then see these faceless hooded beings watching us from the tops of the buildings as they swayed. Their followers screamed in pain as wire ran through them, lifting their bodies into the sky. So for me, when I see this photo of this beautiful looking sculpture/statue, I remember that dream. The town twisted like Inception and became a dark maze for us to travel through, trying to find our way out. — I was on the right path and suddenly knew where to go but then I woke up.

My Interpretation

The dark robed figure is a classic shadow symbol. The number 12 is significant. If it were my dream I would think of the 12 disciples or 12 people being on a jury, which would make me wonder if religious or legal issues were involved, whether you are facing some challenges on these levels.

If I’m reading the dream right, it sounded like the people were marked, but you were not and you left. The followers met with a grizzly fate while you escaped.

For me, the dream I believe is predicting that you will avoid bad outcomes by not being a mindless follower of cults whether that be of a religious or a political nature.

This is a complex dream that could be taken at different levels. The question for me is whether it is describing what is currently happening, or whether it is giving advice about the future or both.

What do pets and an evil-sounding voice mean in some dreams?

Shadow Knows Best
Shadow Knows Best

Dream 355: Let It Go

“I just woke up from a dream at 3:06 when I looked at the time. I dreamt I was in a room so familiar with a door open, with a furnace, a lot of boxes, and tossed aside stuff. I had a friend over and a kitten, but that’s not what spoke to me in my dream.

It is when I walked into the room of boxes and next to the cold furnace…my roommate’s dead dog Lily. My buddy! I told my whoever was in the room to come to me, its my dog. I wanted to see if she could see her to.

I heard a meow. I looked to my left. My poor cold underground cat, my baby boy Kidd. I cried in grief but yet happy to see him.

My full attention was on him. He felt cold and a bit damp. Not what I wanted him to be since I found him barely alive in the rain one night. I cried loving him just giving him attention.

I said, “I got my wish. I got to see you again. Just wish you guys were back with me.” Then (Here’s the weird part) a voice came from inside him.

A male voice. Calming, gentle and yet again familiar. He said, “Its time for Kidd Lily and Jack (or scrap) to return now. But remember you’re still with us.” I asked him “do I know you?” He laughed a bit deeply and it worried me.

I hugged my dear cat again wishing he’ll be fine. It hurt to say goodbye again. He continued to laugh then “POOF.” I woke up as they vanished.

I’m curious. Who could that voice be? For months I had wished to have Kidd back. That voice gave him back for a few minutes…You can’t bring back the dead but you can still see them in dreams.

Thank you voice. My wish still came true cause of you. I just hope you’re not evil. My best friends deserve the best.”

Interpretation

I believe that the voice was probably his Shadow. We usually think of the shadow as being negative and aggressive and want nothing to do with it. That is why the shadow talks to him through his beloved cat, so that he might accept what it says.

It asked him to do something he did not want to do, to let go of his pets and decrease actively mourning for them. Owners are usually emotionally close to their pets. That is why parents usually represent our affections.

He tries to reassure the dreamer that he could let go of them because they will always be with him in his subconscious. When we make major changes in life, it is usually due at least partly to the shadow.

Males usually go more with action parts of your mind and that is why it is a male voice that comes out of the shadow, because it wanted him to take the action of letting go. The voice becomes somewhat mischievous and almost evil. That is because we almost always wonder if the shadow is evil incarnate.

Lack of acceptance of the shadow is a danger. The danger is that it has no contact with other parts of the personality that would keep it in line. The shadow is usually only dangerous when it does not have other parts of your mind to limit it. If other parts of the personality are not there, it becomes excessive and monstrous.

My dream interpretation method is described in my book at http://www.drstevenfox.com

What do shoes mean in a dream?

Shoe support

In dreams, shoes typically have to do with how we are supported in life emotionally. The following dream is an illustration of this principle:

Dream 316: My Shoes Saved Me
A woman dreamed she was in the shoe store to buy some shoes. She was wearing no shoes and was barefoot. A robber came into the store with a gun.

She slipped out of the store. The robbers chased after her outside. Suddenly she had shoes on. The robber shot at her twice and missed each time. She fell to the ground, got a small gun out of one of her shoes and shot the robber dead.

Interpretation

Metaphorically, feet in dreams get us to where we need to go in life. Shoes help the feet support us while also protecting the feet. Getting new shoes in a dream can mean getting a new support system to help you get to where you want to go in life and to feel protected/safe.

In this case, being barefoot can represent feeling exposed and vulnerable and lacking protection when trying to go forward in life. That the dream occurs in the store suggests that the support was especially needed in her career / business or financial life. The robber was a shadow figure that forced her to escape from danger and protect herself.

While a support system would surely make things easier for the dreamer, the dream was trying to reassure her that she could take care of threats to herself by herself if necessary. She was seen by her subconscious as more than capable of “dodging bullets” in life. Within herself, the dream saw her as having the means to defend herself (the gun in her shoe).

What does being stabbed in the heart mean in a dream?

I cannot believe how I have been hurt
I cannot believe how I have been hurt

Dream 315: You Actually Did That!

A woman dreamed that she was asleep in the dream. Someone was sneaking up on her with a knife. She woke up just as they went to stab her in the heart. She dreamed that she woke up as the person was completing actually stabbing her in the heart. She later indicated that the attacker was a hooded figure.

Interpretation

Being stabbed in the heart often means that the dreamer has been hurt and has heartache over either words or actions. Being asleep in a dream usually means that the dreamer was unconscious or unaware of what led up to the hurt, but she suddenly woke up while being stabbed which usually indicates sudden awareness and shock that the hurtful actions and/or words are occurring right in front of her.

The first level of dream interpretation is always the hardest but potentially the most beneficial.  At this first level, where you consider each character to be a part of the dreamer’s psyche, a hooded figure like that is often the dreamer’s shadow. We think of it as being the aggressive part which is used for self-protection and usually is the main part that changes in therapy.

If the dream is looked at in that way,  her shadow could be urging her to wake up and have a change of heart because she was  hurt.  The shadow wants to get  her out of the situation. Messages from the shadow are almost always dramatic and this may or may not apply to the dreamer’s situation.

What do closets, warehouses and storage units mean in dreams?

What can I use from my past?
What can I use from my past?

Storage areas in a dream such as warehouses, closets, storage facilties and even junkyards in some cases, typically represent influences in our mind or psyche. These things are “real” in the sense of being psychological memories, abilities, personal qualities and/or defenses we have stored in our minds. Dreams frequently rummage through these assets from the past to see if there is anything in our personal inventory that we can use in our present life situation. The dream that follows is an example of our subconscious taking inventory of our personal assets through a dream.

Dream 310: I Think About Things I Could Use From the Past, (but it makes me so angry)

A woman dreamt she had a dream that she lived on an army post. She saw a whole bunch of furniture and clothes right in front of her door. Some woman was leaving from her storage unit and had items that the dreamer owned in her hands.

The dreamer was puzzled. She was trying to figure out why this woman felt she had the right to take her personal items. At least one of the items was given to the dreamer by her mother. The dreamer felt hurt and angry that these things were being taken from her.

The dreamer was outraged. She was so angry that she was ready to physically fight the lady. The dreamer then woke up crying with a tremendous headache.

Interpretation

The dream begins at an army post. The army is part of the Department of Defense.  So the dream announced at the beginning that it was going to be about the dreamer’s defenses.

A house can represent the dreamer because it is the framework out of which the dreamer lives. Clothing represents defenses usually because it is what we present to the outside world.  Each character in the dream is usually a part of the dreamer’s mind at the first level.

This was a part of the dreamer’s psyche trying to look through her past and trying to see what was of value. In dreams storage facilities are frequently memory storage of our past. When storage areas are being rummaged through, typically the dreamer’s shadow is trying to find what could be of value there.

This is a shadow with a double entendre. That is, it may possibly be saying that her anger is getting in the way of retrieving valuable assets, defenses and personal qualities she had from the past. This is complicated by the possibility that anger over things that happened in the past may be getting in the way of using what was valuable from those difficult experiences.

What does a tall dark stranger mean in a dream?

Dream 306 The dreamer was a woman who was looking around a room only noticing there was a lot of other people. She saw a tall dark stranger staring at her. He had bright grey eyes that glowed

Come to Me
Come to Me

in the dark. She initially thought he had a mustache and beard and somewhat disheveled blonde hair so that he looked like a mountain man. A long black trench coat completed his mountain-man appearance. They were locked in a gaze at each other before she finally looked away. She decided that she would not look at the stranger again.

Interpretation
This intense stranger is a form of the shadow archetype with mystical penetrating eyes. He represents a civilized form of the savage masculine. The strength that is almost always in the shadow is conveyed by the strong mountain man image. He is a man of action who is beckoning her to use his strength.

The thought is that he is a civilized natural man of action who is part of her subconscious. This part of her mind is urging her to use his strength to inform her actions so that she is more assertive. The eyes are the windows to the soul and his eyes are light glowing in the dark.

The dream is being mystical. It is implying that using this strength to be assertive will change her soul. Using the strength of the shadow to support positive behavior is called using the shadow in service to the ego.

She will see the light if she follows the dream’s advice. As usual, it is changing the shadow that most affects our behavior. Melding all the archetypes together so that the person functions best results in good mental health.

What does a shadow figure mean in a dream?

Shadow Energy
Shadow Energy

The Shadow is a major dream archetype. It is usually a dark figure in profile or can be a criminal or aggressive stalking figure that either tries to break in to your residence or is pursuing you in some way. We all have a shadow. These contain aggressive impulses and parts of ourselves that we have rejected for now.

The shadow also contains our “get up and go.” it is vital to the personality. Other parts of the personality need to be in contact with the shadow to place appropriate limits on it. By working with the shadow, the other parts of the personality benefit by getting the energy that is in the shadow that can be put to good use.

The following is a dream I had at a critical time that assured me that I would make it through a conflict:

Dream 305: The Caped Crusader

I saw a dark caped figure moving energetically down a hall towards me who seemed mysterious but not threatening. It had the aire almost of an evangelical figure arriving to save us all. I looked at him with awe as I was leaning down to tie my shoe.

Interpretation

This was a numinous or luminous image of the shadow. A numinous or luminous image fills the observer with awe because of its power and is almost sacred in nature. The Savior-moving energy of this dark almost evangelical hero image was to reassure me that I had lots of energy which I would have to use in the adversarial conflict I was in the middle of.

Even the detail of tying my shoes was important. Shoes protect the feet and allow us to get somewhere faster in safety. The feet are supportive of our body.

Tying my shoe meant that I was getting myself together to protect and support myself to get to where I needed to be in this conflict. While it was a high level conflict, I believe this detail was emphasizing the importance of details. Not tying your shoe could impede your progress. Not overlooking a detail in the huge administrative conflict I was involved in was extremely important.

Appearance of the Sacred Heroic Masculine

tmp_19585-White Knight-1399391585 To Serve and Protect

Dream 288
A man in his forties dreamed repeatedly that he was visited by a white robed faceless spirit. This spirited man gave the dreamer all elements of a knights armor. He was given a knights helmet, breastplate, body armor, sword, etc.

This was a recurring dream where he found himself fighting evil night after night in his protective knights armor. He felt powerful and strong. He felt the dream was spiritually significant.

Interpretation
At the first level of dream interpretation, each character in the dream represents a part of the dreamer’s mind or psyche. Men are usually associated more with action parts of the mind. Women usually represent more emotional parts of the psyche.

Repetitive or recurrent dreams are almost always big dreams as Carl Jung believed that some dreams meant more than others. This was especially likely to be the case with recurrent dreams. Usually, the recurrent dream is returning to a repeated theme to continue to try to resolve a repetitive problem.

This dreamer was visited by his own spirit of the heroic masculine. The heroic masculine is the most positive aspect of masculinity. It is a major archetype ingrained in the collective subconscious of mankind.

The heroic masculine motto is “to serve and protect.” This is a very spiritual dream. White is the most spiritual color.

The fact that the heroic masculine was faceless and the evil he was fighting was vague indicated that there are many aspects of himself that he is not familiar with. The dream was recurring over the course of a month as his subconscious wanted him to get to know both the positive and shadow parts of his subconscious. The dream used knights armor to emphasize that chivalry of the heroic masculine. The dream use the armor to emphasize that it was mainly about how he protected himself so that he could protect and help others.

This dream was saying that he would be protected when he uses his heroic masculine to protect himself and others from evil. This dream was saying that the dreamer had developed the positive aspects of masculinity to the point where he was a spiritual warrior. The appearance of this strong of a form of the heroic masculine indicates that he was ready to take major positive action for himself and loved ones.

Calming the Tiger Within

49071_700x
Calming the Tiger Within

This stunning picture is of a Buddhist monk sharing his meal with a tiger. His inner peace is so strong that the tiger feels it, is not threatened by him, and is able to modulate tiger instinct. This could be a model of how to deal with the vastly different parts of each person’s mind.

In dreams, at the first level, each creature and character in the dream represents a part of the mind or psyche. If this were a dream, the tiger would represent the shadow, often the aggressive side of our instinctual nature. This instinctual nature needs to be tamed and not eliminated. The monk would typically represent an altruistic action part of the subconscious.

The Shadow energy is vital for self-defense. It also is our “get up and go” energy needed to complete any work, projects, or competition successfully. The Shadow has to allow other parts of the personality to cooperate with it or disaster unfolds.

Illuminate the Darkness…

Illuminate the darkness because the light will take care of itself.Jung-fate-quoteCarl Jung - Imaging figures of light

In therapy one usually changes by changing the shadow. Either you put something into the shadow you no longer want to be a part of you, or you take some unknown part out of the shadows that you did not know existed that can be useful.

You Are So Far Gone!

images(2)Dream 263: A 19-year-old man dreamed that he was in a parked car at night. One of his friends from high school, David, tapped on the passenger window. He asked the dreamer to come out of the car.

The dreamer proceeded to the back of a car and simultaneously saw his best girlfriend from high school and his worst and most evil girlfriend walking hand in hand down the sidewalk in front of the car. When the dreamer went to the back of the car, David hugged him and said “You are so far gone!”

Interpretation:Being in a car parked at night means that you have been subconsciously passive. Night time goes with inactivity and passivity. Darkness usually represents the subconscious while the brightness of day represents more conscious and more active parts of the psyche.

Each character in the dream represents a different part of the dreamer’s mind or psyche. Men tend to go with more active parts of the mind while women usually represent more emotional parts of the psyche. He was being beckoned by an active part of his psyche, David, to be more active.

Two characters in a dream hugging indicates that those two parts of the psyche are integrating. The dream wanted him to integrate action into his life more.

The good girlfriend represented more positive emotional parts of himself while the evil girlfriend represented his shadow emotions.

He was very resistant to recognizing and using shadow emotions in his life. In therapy, it was clear he needed to use some of the aggressive shadow emotions because these emotions end up being your “get up and go.” It was a good sign that his positive emotions (the good girlfriend) was holding hands with shadow emotions (the evil girlfriend) because this indicated some beginning integration.

This statement that “You are so far gone!” was actually a compliment. It meant that his new outlook of being willing to be more assertive in seeking his goals was firmly established. He would never return to being his old self.

The Shadow Offers a Gift

DSC_0005Dream 256: The Shadow Offers a Gift

Dream 256: A 34-year-old woman dreamt that she was in bed with her ex-husband. She heard a knock at their bedroom door and she went to answer. Once she opened the door she felt a little jello hands trying to pull her gently out the door. She then saw a dark figure lean over and place a gift at her feet.

Interpretation: Her husband had been calling the shots regarding custody of the children and having her pay support to him. She recently decided after therapy to become assertive and get court orders that made her an equal parent in the relationship. The figure at the door was her shadow trying to move her gently away from her ex. She decided it was time to change her relationship with him.

The little jello hands are emphasizing her shadow is not trying to force her into action but his giving her encouragement to move away from her ex. Her shadow then appeared directly to place a gift at her feet. She was going to court the next day and it was expected by everyone that it would be settled on much more favorable terms towards her so that she was an equal.

The shadow was encouraging her because she was making moves away from the manipulative ex-husband. The shadow was surmising that she would receive a gift by the way of the court orders the next day which turned out to be accurate. She more or less lived happily ever after.

Shadow Quote

downloadAlex, a reader at amazon, highlighted the following quote from my book.

Alex highlighted:

The Shadow is only dangerous when other structures are not available to positively direct its behavior. If one is not in contact at all with his or her Shadow, there is danger that it may become frustrated and take over the personality because the rest of the person is not considering the Shadow’s input. The Shadow can be dangerous in this circumstance because reasonable limits are not being put upon it by other subconscious entities. When you’ve had it up to your ears in frustration, the Shadow will remove you from the situation by whatever means are available. This accounts for the situations where you did something in your own best interest in such a dramatic way that later you can hardly believe you did it. The Shadow is protective in focusing on self-survival and the person’s own best self-interests.

There is so much more in the book at http://www.drstevenfox.com about the shadow which is often key to change.

The Shadow– Main Source of Change

Change Your Shadow, Change Your Life
Change Your Shadow, Change Your Life
I rejoice that readers of my book “get it.” I love it when people I do not know, come up to me, and say “this is my dream and this is what you are going to think about it.”  They are almost always close to what I would have said which shows me that they truly understood and integrated my book into their dream interpretations.

Below is a passage from my book about the Shadow. The Shadow archetype is usually the main part of the psyche that changes when psychotherapy is successful.

The Shadow is only dangerous when other structures are not available to positively direct its behavior. If one is not in contact at all with his or her Shadow, there is danger that it may become frustrated and take over the personality because the rest of the person is not considering the Shadow’s input. The Shadow is dangerous in this circumstance because reasonable limits are not being put upon it by other subconscious entities.

I am finishing my personal story and sojourn to health by putting MS into remission with the help of the universe/God. It will be my second book showing that dreams were an important part of that journey. My personal psychology enters into the picture a lot. I basically see years of physical abuse as laying the foundation for having the foundation for contracting the chronic illness of multiple sclerosis. Amazon will publish it first as an ebook. The name of the book will be something like MS Mission Remission: Healing Severe Chronic Multiple Sclerosis Against All Odds.

Dream 237: I’m Not Going to Abuse Substances

A 42-year-old woman dreamt that she was on a horse with her best friend who was a dentist now. The horse stumbled and the dreamer fell down an Alice-in-Wonderland hole. She then was with a hostile ex-husband who was in bed with her.

There was a man who was dark and shadowy at the end of the bed who pointed a gun at her and shot her. She then was in a medieval banquet hall. It was filled with her friends and friends of her daughter.

Interpretation

Horses are often a symbol of female sexual power or vitality. Having her best friend in the dream was a way of doubling the dreamer. That her friend is now a dentist indicated that healing, physical healing, was on the table.

Falling into the Alice-in-Wonderland hole meant that her reality completely changed. That she was with an ex-husband who she was alcoholic with during the time she was with him was significant. In the dream, she was shot by her shadow which indicated that she was not going to return to her previous ways of drinking and being addicted.

At the time of the dream, she had started to take back pain pills because she had injured her back severely. The dream indicated her subconscious worried that she might abuse substances. The last scene indicates that she need not worry. She was treated to a banquet which was compensation for her subconscious being too severe in worrying about substance dependence.

This dream was interpreted using principles from my book at http://www.drstevenfox.com

Dream 130–Getting Away from It All

Dream 130 Getting Away From It All

A twenty-eight year old man dreamed that he was on a ship which navigated to an island.  When he went onto the island, there was a path covered with an ongoing bamboo mat which led to a vibrantly green and lush jungle.  There was a large muscular brute of a man blocking his way down the path.

The dream then shifted to his being on board the ocean liner which was anchored near the island.  There were two huge pipes that were large enough for a man to walk in.   The devil appeared and said that they should race down each pipe to see who gets to the island first.  He then saw himself lying on the beach with the island in the distant horizon.  A cloud formed  over him and  rained upon him.

Dream 130 Interpretation

This was an early therapy dream.  He was navigating his subconscious to find a new path in life.  The bamboo paving the way to his growth was the recent growth within him that allowed him to even consider therapy.  The lush jungle represented the new growth he was considering.  The brute of a man was his earlier macho man attitude which is similar to the savage masculine archetype.  The devil represented his shadow because he really “raised hell” when he was younger.  His shadow was encouraging him to race towards change and was trying to inspire his get up and go.

Sitting on the beach means that he was in that area between the subconscious ocean and conscious land.  He was backing away and distancing himself from therapy.  The dream assured him that staying away from therapy would not be pleasant and would result in depression (represented by the rain).
