My Attempt to Change Died

Dream 280: Change Died
baby-found-alive-at-chinese-funeral-home-2-days-after-being-pronounced-dead
A 48-year-old woman dreamed that she bought the house of her son’s mother-in-law. When she arrived at this house, there was a dead baby in a casket with large funeral candles on each side of the casket.

Interpretation

This woman was hyper-critical of her son. His mother-in-law had a troubled background similar to his mother’s personal history. The mother-in-law was, nevertheless, relatively calm, more diplomatic, and less critical than the dreamer.
A house can represent the dreamer because it is the framework out of which one lives. That the dreamer bought the house indicates that the dreamer is aspiring to be a different person, to be more like her son’s mother-in-law. The deceased baby is not good news.

Each character in a dream represents a part of the dreamer’s personality at the first level of dream interpretation. A baby represents a new part of the personality or psyche that the dreamer tried to develop. So a baby represents personal growth on the part of the dreamer.

That the baby is dead signals that her attempt to be different, to be more like the calmer mother-in-law, failed. That it was an attempt to change was highlighted by the funeral candles. Candles imply fire, and fire represents change because fire changes matter into energy.

It is perfect that they were funeral candles. Funeral candles are typically unlit. The unlit candles emphasized that no change had occurred. That it is a funeral scene gives some hope because the dreamer saw her lack of change as a real loss. The dreamer is in mourning which suggests that being more like the mother-in-law personality-wise was something that the dreamer really wanted.

Dream 269: Saving Face

Send in the clowns
Send in the clowns

Dream 269:

A 32-year-old woman dreamed of an image of her face with a huge number of stitches which covered her face almost like a mask.

Interpretation
Her job was in security for a federal building. She had to thoroughly search each person who entered the building. It often was necessary to be assertive and even abrupt with difficult people.

In dreams, a mask is it defense that hides who you really are. She thought that she had to put on a stern façade which was not like her real personality. The image in this dream brings to mind the saying of “saving face.” She thought that to heal herself she would have to quit the job because it was covering who she really was.

She disliked the scars which the job forced on her personality. She felt the job was ruining the image she had of herself. Consciously, she felt the job was good paying and have good benefits; however, she knew that her subconscious would eventually insist she leave the job.

The Shadow Offers a Gift

DSC_0005Dream 256: The Shadow Offers a Gift

Dream 256: A 34-year-old woman dreamt that she was in bed with her ex-husband. She heard a knock at their bedroom door and she went to answer. Once she opened the door she felt a little jello hands trying to pull her gently out the door. She then saw a dark figure lean over and place a gift at her feet.

Interpretation: Her husband had been calling the shots regarding custody of the children and having her pay support to him. She recently decided after therapy to become assertive and get court orders that made her an equal parent in the relationship. The figure at the door was her shadow trying to move her gently away from her ex. She decided it was time to change her relationship with him.

The little jello hands are emphasizing her shadow is not trying to force her into action but his giving her encouragement to move away from her ex. Her shadow then appeared directly to place a gift at her feet. She was going to court the next day and it was expected by everyone that it would be settled on much more favorable terms towards her so that she was an equal.

The shadow was encouraging her because she was making moves away from the manipulative ex-husband. The shadow was surmising that she would receive a gift by the way of the court orders the next day which turned out to be accurate. She more or less lived happily ever after.

Shadow Quote

downloadAlex, a reader at amazon, highlighted the following quote from my book.

Alex highlighted:

The Shadow is only dangerous when other structures are not available to positively direct its behavior. If one is not in contact at all with his or her Shadow, there is danger that it may become frustrated and take over the personality because the rest of the person is not considering the Shadow’s input. The Shadow can be dangerous in this circumstance because reasonable limits are not being put upon it by other subconscious entities. When you’ve had it up to your ears in frustration, the Shadow will remove you from the situation by whatever means are available. This accounts for the situations where you did something in your own best interest in such a dramatic way that later you can hardly believe you did it. The Shadow is protective in focusing on self-survival and the person’s own best self-interests.

There is so much more in the book at http://www.drstevenfox.com about the shadow which is often key to change.

Did My Horse Win?

imagesDream 254: A 48-year-old woman dreamt that she was walking on the sidewalk in front of the house where she was raised. In front of her were her mother and an attractive woman leading the way. She realized that she did not know where her car was. Suddenly, she was concerned because she did not know if her horse won the horse race.

Interpretation– The fact that she and the others were walking in front of the house she was raised in, indicates that deep subconscious factors were involved. Each character in the dream is a part of her psyche. Her mother represents her mother introject, would you as the mother inside her mind which takes care of herself and others. The attractive woman is an anima figure, an idealized woman who is the major part of her psyche that would be involved in dating relationships.

A car is how you get somewhere in life. Realizing that she does not know where it was indicated that she did not know where she was going in life. Horses frequently symbolize female sexual power. Wondering whether her horse won the race was equivalent to dreaming if the man she was dating was the right man for her. They had been involved for nine months, and she seemed ambivalent.

Get Up and Dance

A 52-year-old woman dreamt that her mother was sitting next to her bed. Her mother yelled at her to “Get Off Your Fat Buttocks (Euphemism) and Dance.” The dreamer noted that her mother was a down-to-earth woman who could be quite crude.

Dream 244–Interpretation

This dream was a combination of a vision dream and a dream where the subconscious talks directly to the dreamer. Her mother had recently died prior to the dream. The dreamer was trying to lose weight and tried various weight loss programs and physical therapy with inconsistent progress. This dream was emphasizing that she needed to exercise to lose weight.

Use Your Head and Relax, Man

Use Your Head and Relax, Man

Dream 224: No Problem, Man

A 24-year-old woman had the image in a dream of a horse’s head with Jamaican Rastafarian curly and intricately braided hair.

Dream 224–Interpretation

Animals are instinct. Horses are renowned for having common sense, i.e. “horse sense.” Jamaicans are known for having ample supplies of marijuana. She insisted on using marijuana to relax. The dream was screaming that she needed to use her head about how much marijuana she used.

Put Yourself Out in the River of Life

fish in river of life

Dream 210: Be Ye Fishers of Men

A 37-year-old woman dreamed that she was sitting on a couch looking at a fish that was stuck on a wall above an opposite and opposing couch. She then saw her best and extroverted friend who magically made the fish come to life. The friend then carried the fish to a stream in front of the house. The friend released the fish into the stream.

Dream 210–Interpretation

Fish represent subconscious energy. Water is emotion. The dream was saying that her emotional energy had hit a wall. A house can represent the dreamer to an extent as it is the framework out of which the dreamer lives. The extroverted friend was from her high school and she was very extroverted and active. The dream was asking her to use the emotional extrovert within herself to release seemingly dead energy and to return to the river of life.

Take Care of Your Little Boy

Dream 203: Take Care of Your Little Boy

A 34-year-old man dreamt that his recently deceased mother was hugging his son who was six years old. The mother was nodding approvingly toward the dreamer as she hugged his son.

Dream 203 Interpretation

The dreamer noted that this dream seemed almost real. So real that we could classify this dream as a vision dream. If we look at this dream symbolically, his emotions are giving approval about how he was taking care of his son. The dreamer recently stopped negative activities and dedicated himself to being a good father to his son. Mom would be proud.

Being Conservative Is Hard on My Head

It Is My Thing
It Is My Thing

Dream 202: Being Conservative Is Hard on My Head

A 36-year-old fine arts professor dreamed that he was on the patio of a Mexican restaurant. The was a wasp’s nest above the kidney-shaped bar. Suddenly, a wasp flew down and stung him in the head. The dream shifted to him listening to a waitress. She was telling him about a long sordid affair she had with a professor.

Dream 202 Interpretation

This professor recently received job offers from colleges in Ohio and California. WASP also stands for White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. I asked him which college was more conservative. He replied that the college in Ohio was much more conservative and he did not know if it would tolerate his avant-garde teaching style and research. I asked him what he associated with Mexican restaurants, and he replied California. I asked him what was the biggest mistake he ever made in his field, and he replied that he regretted a decision not to attend a college in California.

The dream voted for the college in California. His subconscious exclaimed that a conservative atmosphere was hard on his head and thinking. A restaurant in a dream nurtures one psychologically, and the dream is saying that, for him, California is more nurturing.

The female waitress is a part of his work emotions. In dreams, a waitress is often seen as “one who waits.” He told me consciously that his biggest career mistake was not attending a learning institution in California. The waitress is talking about an emotional mistake with a professor. The dream is warning him about making sincere and solid emotional connections. The dream is screaming that he needs to attend a learning institution in California.

Let a Fool Help Drive Your Life

170525476Dream 200: Let a Fool Help Drive Your Life

A 44-year-old professional and serious woman dreamt that she stopped at a house to check up on her father. When she got back into the car at night, there was a baby boy crawling in the street that she narrowly missed. Then her carefree and happy-go-lucky brother ran along the car. He suddenly jumped into her lap. She and he shared the driving as she was in the driver’s seat always.

Dream 200 Interpretation

This woman was serious to the point of almost being grim sometimes. A house can represent the dreamer somewhat, especially if there is a family member there. A car is how one gets somewhere in life. She essentially checks up on her father introject, usually a major driver of the person’s actions. This dream essentially reviews action parts of her psyche to make a recommendation (since the three other characters are male).

The baby boy was a new action part of her psyche which had not been integrated and was in danger of almost becoming psychological road kill. The brother that jumped onto her lap was a significant recommendation by the dream. He essentially “plays the fool” and embodies the fool archetype. The dream is recommending that she integrate more fun as a major driver in her life to get to where she wants to go.

Don’t Be a Hero

Dream 199: Might as Well Face It You’re Addicted to Love

Heroine on Heroin
Heroine on Heroin

A 24-year-old male dreamt that he was giving his brother shots of heroin in the leg to prevent his brother from having extreme withdrawal symptoms.

Dream 198 Interpretation

I aked him whether he was having trouble with a girlfriend. He indicated that he recently broke up with a woman who was having addiction to drug problems. The fact that the way many people pronounce heroin as “heroine” was a major clue. You are entering the world of fantastic ideation in dreams where clang associations and extreme concreteness paradoxically exist in the same space as spiritual desires.

I asked him what his brother’s personality was like. His brother was the embodiment of the heroic masculine archetype, always helping and protecting those he loved. The dreamer’s desire was to save the beautiful now ex-girlfriend. The dream, like most dreams, is perfect in the sense that while the girlfriend was addicted to drugs, the dreamer was addicted to the girlfriend.

He literally went through withdrawal breaking up with the girlfriend as he was focused on saving her. It is notable that the sound of the word heroin (heroine) clued this dream interpreter in to the idea that the heroic masculine was probably involved. In the dream he is literally trying to spare his own heroic masculine from experiencing withdrawal symptoms from the dreamer’s addiction to the drug addicted girlfriend. Legs in a dream involve the issue of support as legs support us physically. The dream was urging him to withdraw his support from the substance plagued girlfriend.

Clean Up Your Language

halloween__toddler-deluxe-police-officer-costume
Dream 198A: Clean Up Your Communication

A 48-year-old man dreamt that he was a police officer. A mother was telling him to write down neatly the changes that needed to occur in her 12-year-old son. She complained that her son was only getting C’s and D’s.

Dream 198A–Interpretation

A police officer is a superego figure (as are all law enforcement officers.) The mother in the dream is his mother introject which primarily deals with emotional issues. The son is his immature actions.

He recently was getting in trouble with his wife for swearing too much. She complained that his swearing was ruining their positive emotional atmosphere. She thought it was juvenile (the boy) and she and his mother introject gave his speech low grades (C’s and D’s). The fact that the police officer wrote down the information means that he should take special note of what his mother introject is telling him. His superego or conscience is telling him to clean up (write more legibly, communicate more clearly) his language.

Focus On Your Music and Get Rid of the Stuff

Dream 197: Get Rid of This Stuff and Play Music

A 19-year-old man dreamedOasis_drummer he was going to a shopping mall to find his high school girlfriend that recently broke up with him. He went to a pet store where she worked in the dream. She was cleaning out an animal cage. She ignored him. Her back was to him and she focused on music that was blaring from a speaker.

Dream 197 Interpretation

Dreams that start out in shopping malls are typically announcing that the dream is going to be about how the dreamer was “mauled” in life, in this case by his girlfriend. It is important to remember that each character in the dream is a part of the dreamer’s psyche. The girlfriend in the dream is the part of his psyche or emotions that dealt with this girlfriend.

That it occurs in a store that sells domesticated pets indicated that the dream was about how she affected his affections and instincts. That it was in a commercial establishment implied that the dream was concerned about how it affected his business which was music. The setting of the dream often points to the part of the dreamer’s life that is being affected.

The dream is blatantly urging him to ignore her and get rid of the stuff (euphemism since the part of his psyche that dealt with her was cleaning feces from animal cages) about his instinctual sexual and affectionate feelings toward her. The dreamer was a drummer for a recording studio. The dream was urging him to focus on his music.

Getting Over Work Adddiction

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Dream 195: Getting Over My Work Addiction

A 34-year-old woman dreamt that she had a baby prematurely at twenty weeks past conception. The baby looked like a little man. He looked like a mentor and manager at work that she deeply admired and tried to emulate. The baby was wrapped in a blanket with the ends of the blanket stretched and tied so that the baby was encased in a stretched blanket which hung like a hammock above the incubator.

The baby was not doing well. Finally, the baby had convulsions and fell to the floor. A doctor she liked told her, “Don’t worry, that happens here all the time.” She then heard an overriding voice that sounded like the mentor she admired that said, “I found God and sobriety.”

Dream 195 Interpretation

This women’s mentor took another job and left her workplace about twenty weeks ago. She had to do all the work she performed before and fill in for his position as well. She barely knew enough to do all the functions of her transformed position.

Her being the mother of a 20-week-old baby symbolized the birth of her new work position which was twenty weeks old. She felt that her mentor left his position prematurely before she learned all the necessary functions. The baby represented her new work psyche which she felt had been “stretched and hung out to dry” (similar to the baby in the incubator.)

The good doctor was warning her that she was likely to crash if she continued on her chosen course. The overriding voice from her mentor was advising her to avoid being addicted to work (since he said he found sobriety) and to be more spiritual (he said he found God.) She decided to heed the words of her subconscious. She decided to spend less time at work, look for a new job and pursue her spiritual interests.

Let It Go

Dream 196: Let It Go Child
images(2)

A 46-year-old woman dreamed that she was going to the bathroom. The bathroom was filthy. She saw the largest cockroach she had ever seen and felt disgusted. Someone was knocking on the bathroom door and telling her to hurry up. When she opened the door, her mother stomped on the cockroach and urged the dreamer to get on with her life.

Dream 193 Interpretation

The dreamer’s mother recently died. Her sister was the executor of the estate. Her sister arranged the way she administered the trust so that almost all the financial benefits went to herself. The mother was cremated. The mother indicated before she died that she wanted her ashes kept together and buried with a marker on the grave. The dreamer’s sister refused to spend any money on buying a marker for her mother’s grave. The disgust the dreamer felt in the dream toward the cockroach was exactly how she felt about her sister’s actions. The dreamer was totally disgusted that the sister who received all the financial proceeds after her mother’s death was now too cheap to buy a modest marker for her mother’s grave.

A bathroom in a dream is where you get rid of things you no longer need. The mother in the dream is the dreamer’s internalized mother introject. This emotional part of her was engraved in her subconscious by her mother. The dreamer’s mother is urging the dreamer to get over her disgust (hurry up and get out of the bathroom) in graphic terms (mom kills the cockroach in front of the dreamer). The dreamer verified that if her mother were alive, that is what she would ask the dreamer to do, i.e., “Come on dear and put this behind you now because it is not worth it and your sister is not going to change.”

Vision of My Deceased Father

It was so real it was like he was there
It was so real it was like he was there

Dream 178: I Never Left You
A 43-year-old woman dreamt that she was looking into a mirror. Suddenly, her deceased father walked through the mirror and was hugging her. The dream was vivid beyond words as she felt that she actually saw, heard, smelled and touched her father. She said, “Daddy, don’t leave me.” He replied in a vivid, gently commanding and overriding voice, “I never have.”
Dream 178 Interpretation
This dream was a vision dream. Vision dreams seldom need any interpretation. There were several indicators that this was a vision dream. First of all, the shear vividness of the dream is remarkable. All of the senses were involved. It is infrequent that a dreamer senses she can feel, touch and smell the deceased loved one. She was grieving the death of her father. She was very emotionally close to her father who died only a month prior to this vision dream.
As Jungian analyst Geri Grubbs Ph.D. pointed out in her book, Bereavement Dreaming and the Individuating Soul, deceased loved ones tend to appear in one’s dreams intensely for up to two years after the person’s death. The fact that she saw her father walk out of a mirror further supports the vision nature of the dream. Popular cinema always insisted that one could not see a ghost in a mirror. The dream vision was emphasizing the vision nature of this dream. This dream needed no interpretation. It is what it was.

You’re Pretty, But I Am Smart

Pretty Woman, Smart ManDream 176: Pretty Woman, Smart Man

A 24-year-old woman was a high fashion model and was very beautiful. She dreamt that her boyfriend was showing her a female friend who was in the same graduate program that he was. The friend was plain looking and smart.
This friend intensely admired the dreamer’s boyfriend. The dreamer wondered why her boyfiend was making such a big deal about his graduate school friend.

Dream 176–Interpretation
It is important to remember that each character in the dream represents a part of the dreamer’s psyche. The part of her that was involved with her boyfriend was advising her to behave emotionally somewhat more like his female (emotions) fellow graduate student toward him. He wanted to be admired for his brains which would counterbalance the relationship somewhat.
He felt she had all the power in the relationship because she was beautiful and rich. He was more uncertain regarding his future and his prospects for success. He wanted her to support his hope that he too would be successful in his own right.

Her Paint Wears Thin

White-Mansion-Plymouth

Dream 230: The Paint Is Wearing Thin

Analyst Jeremy Taylor in his book, Where People Fly and Water Runs Uphill, described a woman who was terrorized by a recurrent dream in which the white paint of her house was bubbling up and peeling away. She felt strangely horrified by this dream and would awaken each time she had it.

Dream 230—Interpretation

Recurrent dreams are “big” dreams because they usually represent the dreamer trying to solve repetitive and similar problems at different points in the dreamer’s lifetime. The house can represent the dreamer because that was the framework out of which she lived. White in almost all cultures is the most spiritual color as it is representative of “the light.”

The paint bubbling away meant that she was at those times feeling hypocritical. Her spiritual veneer or what she showed to the outside world was wearing off and exposing her inner worn surface. That the paint was “bubbling” off indicated that she felt internal anger that threatened to surface. This possibility horrified her.

Drinking a Glass of Water

Dream 166: Drinking a Glass of Water

A 55-year-old man dreamt that he was drinking a glass of clear and healthy water in a bar. He felt totally satisfied and relaxed.

Dream 166–Interpretation

Water represents emotion.  A glass of water represents contained emotion that one drinks or takes in at a comfortable rate.  He recently felt emotionally in control and satisfied. I asked him if alcohol was an issue because of the bar setting of the dream. He indicated that he recently stopped drinking after a three-year binge. This dream illustrates that literally everything in a dream means something. The setting is virtually always important. A dream condenses information and tries to cram the most meaning into the smallest space so that even drinking a glass of water becomes meaningful.
