Dream 277: A woman had a dream that a male friend who had died was at the house where she was living now. She said “hi” even though is it was not the face of her deceased friend. She somehow knew it was her deceased friend, but his face was very different. Then her male friend proceeded to tell her how many pounds of weight he had lost and how many more he wanted to lose.
She looked at him as he was thin. She asked him why would he want to lose more? He looked great. He answered, “Because I like high fashion.”
She went into another room to get something for the wedding rehearsal and when she returned, the room was filled with children. As she walked through the house every room in the house was filled with children. So she told her friend to wait outside in the garden by the pool. She needed to think.
When she went outside to look for him, the garden and pool area was filled with children. As she looked the garden kept stretching and stretching in size until the grounds got bigger and more children appeared. So she told her friend that they might have to wait a bit.
She went back in the house and went to her room which was filled with children. They were playing and holding some of her belongings which included her whole collection of jewelry. She began to get irritated and then they showed her some things they had built like toys from her jewelry. She was impressed, and thought their creations were amazing. These children were of our various cultures and backgrounds.
A house can represent the dreamer herself because it is the framework out of which one lives. In dreams, each person in the dream is part of the dreamer’s mind. Men tend to go with action parts of the psyche or mind, while women tend to go with more emotional parts of the psyche. Unfamiliar faces are parts of ourselves that we do not know very well.
Children are parts of the self that have not been developed and so represent creative potential. The dream mentions a wedding which is a primary symbol of integration since it joins male (action) parts of the mind with emotional (female) aspects of the psyche. A garden, of course, represents personal growth. Water is virtually always emotion and a pool is emotion that is close to home.
The dream tried to appeal to the dreamer’s ego by saying that it is “high fashion” to rid oneself of excessive and unnecessary ego defenses. Clothing typically represents defenses because it is what the world sees. It similarly looked at her personal belongings as defenses supporting the ego and tried to encourage her to be more playful (with the children making toys of them). The moral of the dream is to have fun and stop worrying about looking good.
In the case of the over-weight man, one looks better to others if your actions are less defensive and more playful. Losing weight is getting rid of a barrier or defense to becoming close to other people. The dream emphasized that there were many diverse parts of herself that she had to offer the world. Her subconscious was trying to get her to be less concerned with appearances, particularly concern over appearances that cover who she really was.
Jewelry is personal adornment and does not represent who she is. With the many children and their creativity, the dream is emphasizing that she had much to offer the world.
