What does jewelry, toys, unfamiliar faces, a house, high fashion, a garden, a pool and clothing mean in a dream?

woman jewelryDream 277: A woman had a dream that a male friend who had died was at the house where she was living now. She said “hi” even though is it was not the face of her deceased friend. She somehow knew it was her deceased friend, but his face was very different. Then her male friend proceeded to tell her how many pounds of weight he had lost and how many more he wanted to lose.

She looked at him as he was thin. She asked him why would he want to lose more? He looked great. He answered, “Because I like high fashion.”

She went into another room to get something for the wedding rehearsal and when she returned, the room was filled with children. As she walked through the house every room in the house was filled with children. So she told her friend to wait outside in the garden by the pool. She needed to think.

When she went outside to look for him, the garden and pool area was filled with children. As she looked the garden kept stretching and stretching in size until the grounds got bigger and more children appeared. So she told her friend that they might have to wait a bit.

She went back in the house and went to her room which was filled with children. They were playing and holding some of her belongings which included her whole collection of jewelry. She began to get irritated and then they showed her some things they had built like toys from her jewelry. She was impressed, and thought their creations were amazing. These children were of our various cultures and backgrounds.

Interpretation

A house can represent the dreamer herself because it is the framework out of which one lives. In dreams, each person in the dream is part of the dreamer’s mind. Men tend to go with action parts of the psyche or mind, while women tend to go with more emotional parts of the psyche. Unfamiliar faces are parts of ourselves that we do not know very well.

Children are parts of the self that have not been developed and so represent creative potential. The dream mentions a wedding which is a primary symbol of integration since it joins male (action) parts of the mind with emotional (female) aspects of the psyche. A garden, of course, represents personal growth. Water is virtually always emotion and a pool is emotion that is close to home.

The dream tried to appeal to the dreamer’s ego by saying that it is “high fashion” to rid oneself of excessive and unnecessary ego defenses. Clothing typically represents defenses because it is what the world sees. It similarly looked at her personal belongings as defenses supporting the ego and tried to encourage her to be more playful (with the children making toys of them). The moral of the dream is to have fun and stop worrying about looking good.

In the case of the over-weight man, one looks better to others if your actions are less defensive and more playful. Losing weight is getting rid of a barrier or defense to becoming close to other people. The dream emphasized that there were many diverse parts of herself that she had to offer the world. Her subconscious was trying to get her to be less concerned with appearances, particularly concern over appearances that cover who she really was.

Jewelry is personal adornment and does not represent who she is. With the many children and their creativity, the dream is emphasizing that she had much to offer the world.

The Spectacular Dive

Dream 213: The Spectacular Dive

A 48-year-old woman dreamt that she loaned five hundred dollars to an extroverted and fun friend so that she could go to Europe. The scene then shifted to her diving into a pool near her farm from a low diving board. She was supervised by a rigid and stern uncle. She then saw herself diving into the pool from another diving board that was connected to a gigantic tree. After she surfaced and came to the side of the pool, the uncle informed her that she was only going to get 85 cents back from the five hundred dollars she previously loaned to her friend. She put on sneakers as fast as she could and ran away from her uncle.

Dream 213–Interpretation

Money is energy in dreams. The dream juxtaposed the fun extroverted part of her emotional psyche with the rigid action part of her psyche (the rigid uncle) that went with her strict rural upbringing. Water is emotion. A tree is a primary symbol of integration. The dream assured her that she will have to dive deep into her emotions to be more integrated and to escape swiftly (the sneakers) from her inhibited and constrained actions (the uncle). The dream emphasized that she would never regain the energy she lost on the farm if she continued to limit herself. It was notable that her unempathic and authoritarian mother was eighty-five years old. The dream was yelling with the 85 cents for the five hundred dollars she loaned that she mostly lost energy on the farm.

Dream 233: What is the meaning of a swimming pool in a dream?

The dreamer was a 29-year-old coed in Florida. She could never remember her parents getting along with one another. She dreamt that her mother and father were now swimming in their pool at home, playfully splashing about as if they had never divorced or experienced any sort of trauma. She walked inside and saw a tattoo machine and proceeded to tattoo herself, knowing that tattooing yourself can be a very dangerous thing. She put the machine in her hand and carved a heart on her ankle.

And then she awoke, feeling good about her accomplishment!

Dream 233–Interpretation

The dream showed aspects of a dream of desire. I believe that at the first level of dream interpretation, it represented what was occurring within the dreamer. Her emotions (mother introject) and actions (father introject) were integrating. Water in dreams is virtually always subconscious emotion. A swimming pool in particular represents emotions at home since pools are near home.

On the second and interpersonal level, the dream represented a lifelong desire that her parents would have gotten along and that the dreamer’s own marriage was not in separation. She was taking matters into her own hands (the tattoo machine) now. The tattooed heart represented a permanent subconscious promise to herself about what she learned from her parents and from her husband. The fact that the tattoo was on her ankle, a supportive part of anatomy that helps us get somewhere in life, emphasized the emotional support she felt from making this commitment not to forget the painful lessons she learned.

She was making sure that the pain and lessons from parent and relationship troubles was never dismissed or forgotten. The experiences etched into and under her skin the importance of taking care of her heart. The dream was good news in that she was integrating and transforming and was generally happier with her life.

Fill the Hole in My Soul

My Home Is a Crystal Clear Pool of Emotion

Dream 163: Fill the Hole in My Soul

A 56-year-old man dreamt that he was filling in his swimming pool with dirt.  At other times he saw himself caring for the pool and the water would be crystal clear.

Dream 163–Interpretation

This was a recurrent dream. Water almost invariably represents emotion in dreams. Pools represent contained domestic emotions because they are located in residential domiciles.  He was working through how much emotion he would invest at home with his family.  Filling the swimming pool with dirt shows a preference for grounding (dirt) ones self and covering up emotion (water).  The crystal clear water was a dream of the desired emotional atmosphere at home.  He wanted the family to be crystal clear in their emotional intentions.
