A man dreamed that he was walking with his mother and all of a sudden a pitbull ran out and bit her on the hand. But somehow, when she pulled her hand away, there was no wound and no bleeding. He wondered what this might mean? I, as usual, gave him an answer off the top of my head.
At the first level of dream interpretation, each a living thing represents a different part of your mind. Your mother usually goes with your emotions. Dogs and animals in general represent instinct. Dogs in particular usually represent something to do with protection and loyalty. In a dream like this, figuring out what the contradiction means is always important. The contradiction in this dream is how is it that she gets bitten, but isn’t hurt? In the dream, your mother usually represents the basis of your emotions.
A dog would represent your loyalty or protection of your emotions. I wonder if you tend to be a person who is hesitant to express anger. Because what happens is the dog does something very aggressive, but no harm is done to your emotions. In other words, I think the dream is emphasizing that you’re very worried about hurting others, but might not be standing up for yourself enough.
It is interesting that the dream is exaggerating the point by making the dog a pitbull, a dog known to be aggressive. The dream seems to be saying that it’s not going to hurt your feelings or others feelings by showing some aggression, as long as you don’t draw blood, that is, be too aggressive in your remarks or actions. I believe your dream is going out of its way to exaggerate that being more assertive wouldn’t hurt anything, especially your feelings.
A man recently dreamed that he was floating upside down in a coffee shop in town. At some point(though there are other details) his mother assisted him by tying him to a street light pole so he wouldn’t float away.
When there is coffee involved, one remembers that coffee is a liquid and liquids invariably go with emotions, especially water, of which coffee is made.
The dream seems to be screaming that he needs to wake up as coffee is a wake up drink. I think the dream might be saying that his way of looking at the world is upside down. Almost for sure, it seems to be saying that he needs to be more grounded.
A mother in a dream usually represents the Foundation of your emotions. The basis of his emotions probably wants him to ground himself and to quit floating away with airy ideas. In his case, it may be good for him to be tied down somewhat, even if it is to a pole. Notice that he’s tied to a light pole which could be the subconscious way of saying that his emotions want him “to see the light.” Also, because it is a street light pole could mean that his subconscious wants him to get grounded–to get some “street smarts.” In any case, he needs to get his bearings.
All I really remember of it is that there was an alligator or crocodile, I don’t know which one. It was on the ground and it crawled up to my mom. She was able to tame it and ended up literally cuddling with this crocodile or alligator! She wasn’t afraid and she literally was totally cool with having this animal right up by her. My mom is very compassionate and empathic. Google has not helped me at all to sift through what this means. Any thoughts?
When you dream of your mother you are in this case dreaming of the emotionally positive qualities you have internalized from your mother. Crocodiles usually represent aggressive energy. That is not necessarily negative.
Your get-up-and-go is fueled by aggressive energy so you need a certain amount of aggressive energy to accomplish your goals. Water invariably represents emotions and this dream is about emotional integration within yourself. The dream is urging you to accept all parts of yourself even the aggressive parts because they can be used positively.
The dream says that you either are or it is recommending further use of your positive feminine mothering energy to accept your aggressive impulses so that they can be put to positive use such as being your get up and go to accomplish the goals that you want to. This dream is all about modulating aggressive Shadow energy so that it can be used positively. The dream is emphasizing that you have it within you to accomplish this.
“Last night I had a dream about my mother and I haven’t dreamed of her in quite a while in the dream she and I went to an auto body repair shop to get the front end of my truck repaired and painted (minor accident)so the guy was explaining the process and said it would only cost about $500 for the repair I said fine let’s do it. I went to the restroom and came back the guy said let’s finalize the paperwork so we can get started my mother looked at me and said it’s taken care of I said are you sure she said yes I said thank you and say down.
A few minutes later the guy comes and say you are all set and had a me the keys but I don’t see the key to my truck and mom is standing there looking around and I say to him my key is missing and he shows me another key and says this is your car. I look at my mom and she says I took care it of it. She really took care of it she traded my truck and bought me a new Genesis fully paid for. I hugged her and cried and that hug felt so real I couldn’t let go. We got in the car and left.
Not sure what this means but any help is greatly welcomed…”
A vehicle usually represents your progress in life in a dream. In any case, your mother usually represents the basis of your emotions. The dream may be saying that your emotions have been repaired.
You may be making some kind of shift from work or the financial part of your life (the truck) to focusing on the beginning of a new area (a Genesis) for your life.
The dream may also be integrating mother emotions.
The fact that the hug felt so real implies a vision dream where you were visited. All in a place, it sounds like a reparative and emotionally integrating dream that wants to give you a new vehicle to enjoy a different area of your life.
Dream 440: Consolation after Catastrophic Personal Loss
A woman had the following dream:
“My mom passed Sept 14th. Since then I have had some dreams I don’t understand…as an aside I’ve lost my sister, my brother and my mom in the last 10 months…I had a dream that my left eye went blind, a spot showed up…I had a dream something was coming for me and I tried to scream for help. On the third try I screamed out loud. My husband asked me about it the next day…I had a dream my mom, sister, and I were listening to Waylon Jennings on the tv…of course, they are both gone now…
Update: The next night I dreamt that I went to see my mom and she talked little but laughed a lot and goofed around we were laughing so hard and then we sat down on her bed and laid back. It was a water bed. We sat up and she looked at me and said it’s OK Carol, I’m not lonely anymore.”
Left usually goes with the subconscious and emotions. Right usually goes with conscious actions. Going blind usually represents something you do not want to see. I think that what is coming is what is coming to us all someday, death. Who wants to see that?
With your mom, that is either your mother introject or your mother–actually I think the dream condenses here so it is probably both. The reason it was a water bed probably is because water virtually always represents emotions in dreams. Your mother or mother introject and probably both want her to relax (lay down) her emotions.
You have gone through unbelievable loss, and your subconscious wants you to relax, and treated you with a visit from mom. This is a big dream involving the first (psychological), second (interpersonal), and third (spiritual) levels.
A man dreamed that he was sitting on a couch between his divorced mother and father. He was in the 8th grade. His mother’s head was full of snakes that looked quite threatening and they were green and gooey.
My interpretation of the dream
The first question I asked him was whether he blamed his mother for the divorce. He responded that he had talked with her the night before this dream about the divorce that occurred in an important stage of his life. He noted that he looks like his father and was absent-minded like his father which drove his mother up the wall.
Snakes often signal transformation. The mother in the dream is his mother interject which is usually the basis of emotions. The dream is saying that he went through a major emotional transformation when he was 14 which was in fact when the divorce occurred.
The mother having snakes for hair replicates the Medusa archetype. In Greek mythology, Medusa was a fearsome image and men they looked at her turned into stone. Medusa is a perfect image in this instance.
I believe Medusa shows up also because emotionally he felt his mother was stony and rigid towards him. She could break the dreamer down with one cold stare when he was young. These stares occurred mainly when she equated him with his father because of the similarity of looks and actions.
A woman had the following dream: “I had a strange dream I was walking then I saw my sister at an office and she says that my mom got bit by ants. I believe that was the doctors office. It ended there.”
“Each living thing in the dream represents a part of your mind at the first level. It sounds like it mainly involves emotions since women tend to go more with emotions. The mother in the dream is the mother in your mind that we call the mother introject. The mother introject is often the basis of emotions.
Animals (in this case ants) usually represent our instincts, what we are prone to do naturally. Ants are methodical, routine and focused on accomplishing what needs to be done for the group compulsively.
Being bit by ants is a nuisance/irritating. I wonder if there is a situation (maybe involving family) where you have put in a lot of work and are feeling a little annoyed or taken for granted?”
The dreamer responded with the following confirmation: “Yes, my sister was over for a month. My sister is very bossy and doesn’t use nice words to tell them to do things. Not cursing, not a sweet person very cold and mean!”
“Dreams are wonderful for me lately. I dream of my deceased parents staying married (they divorced when I was 4), seeing them grow old together. Just wishful thinking?”
Whatever theory you look at in mental health, it eventually gets back to mom and dad, it is not the whole thing, it is just a part of it which gets less and less as you get older but there is probably always still some remnant of your parents. The mother and the father you dream of now are the mother and father in your mind which are called a mother introject and a father introject.
The father introject is most often the basis of your actions. The mother introject is most often the basis of your emotions.
Marriage is a union of different parts of your mind. If it is a marriage between your father and your mother, it typically represents you’re integrating your emotions with your actions. The fact that you dream of them growing old together indicates that the integration is a long-term effect. Congratulations!
Dream 375: Permission to Master and Guide My Emotions and Creativity
A woman had the following dream:
“I was talking to my dad asking his permission to bring home a grand piano. He said we have to ask your mom. So,anyway I brought the grand piano in a den that I’ve never seen before nor have I been there. My mom and dad were there and I said to my mom “Can we keep it? The piano matches the mantel, mom, please.” She said, “Okay.” The dream ended there.”
At the first level in a dream, your father represents your father introject which is often the basis of your actions. Your mother introject is usually the foundation of your emotions. So this is a big dream.
A piano, and particularly a grand piano, usually represents creativity and mastery. Music puts us in a certain mood that we control by our selection of music we play so that it can be emotionally related. It may be related to deciding to control your emotions.
In thought emotionally, and in action, you decided on some level to give yourself the means to make beautiful music emotionally or something on that order would be my first idea. And giving yourself permission to do this creative or emotional thing is something that you have decided upon to let yourself do.
“I had a dream last night. We, my husband and I were driving to the beach and as usual We took a wrong turn. We kept driving and although I became a little impatient Jim assured me that he knew where he was going. We turned down a small Ocean front road and followed the road until the end, We pulled into a driveway of a cozy little beach cottage and I asked him why we were there. Our destination was at least 25 miles away. He just smiled and said he wanted to surprise me. I knocked on the door and an old friend of mine Gay answered the door. I saw a long red sofa and a woman was walking from the hallway very angry, she didn’t speak but walked up and down the hallway. Gay told me to come out to the patio and sit for a while and when we opened the door the place was beautiful. All white wicker furniture, flowers everywhere, you could here the ocean roar and the birds sing. The sun was bright but it was as if the heat from it was filtered. I saw a woman walk towards me from the side and smile. It was my Mother who I had lost 19 yrs. ago. She looked so healthy and at peace and gave me a warm hug. She kept saying she was where she should be and was ok. She also said she needed to tell me something but my alarm clock thought otherwise.”
The dream starts out that she is going to the beach with her husband. Both an emotional part of her mind(herself as a woman) and an action part of her mind (often represented by a husband in a dream) are going to a place where consciousness meets the subconscious, the beach.
Land usually represents the conscious, while the best symbol we have for the subconscious is the ocean. Every character is a part of the dreamer’s mind with men representing actions and women representing emotions usually. That is not always true, but is usually the case.
The beach is the place where one works out conflicts and integrates the subconscious with the conscious world. She does not make it to the beach. She stops 25 miles inland which is to say the dream is addressing how things are done consciously now.
She meets an old friend Gay who is a woman. Gay represents something very close to herself and the red couch indicates passion is involved as red is usually either intense love or intense anger. In this case, I think the dream is going to talk about her need for romance.
The place becomes very beautiful and romantic and idyllic. She meets her beloved mother whom I suspect wants to tell her how to integrate her conscious word with her subconscious emotions, i.e., she might be wanting to give the dreamer advice about how to merge romance into her everyday life especially if she was good at doing that in her own life.
A career woman dreamed that she was flying like superwoman. A flying robot was flying after her trying to catch her, which he never did. It was like having to escape from the flying robot helped her to learn to fly better.
She saw a festival and went down to feast before returning to flying. She could hear her mother saying that she should go home and take care of her babies instead of partying and flying around. The dreamer felt resentment that she had to stop flying to take care of her babies (the dreamer had no children in real life.)
Flying implies that the dreamer is feeling personally powerful and able to accomplish many goals. A robot is not human in a mechanical repetitive rote memory way that is boring. A baby represents new projects in the dreamer’s life or new parts of herself that she wants to develop.
Each character in the dream is a part of the dreamer’s mind which is the first rule in my book Dreams: Guide to the Soul. Her mother in the dream is the image of her mother she introjected into her subconscious as a child. The mother introject is often the basis of the dreamer’s emotions. In this case, the mother introject is functioning primarily to make her feel guilty for not living up to her responsibilities.
Given the above, I have several thoughts: (1) The dreamer felt held down and wanted to fly, (2) Her attempts to avoid being robotic-like (she is flying away from a pursuing robot) encouraged her to fly (to boldly strike out in new directions), (3) She felt guilty about festivaling/feasting too much (her mother introject did not approve) and (4) She probably feel held down by new projects (the dream is emphasizing new babies which are usually new projects or developing new parts of herself, i.e., “it’s your baby.”)
The dreamer later told me that “feeling held down is exactly how I feel, it is a good representation of how I feel….I just feel weighted down by all these things, even new projects..and I have little to no energy to make myself become not weighted down……the way I interpreted my dream was, I have to take care of some projects before i learn, or am finally able to fly.”
A woman dreamed that a long pink worm had bored its way into her upper arm. Half of the worm was sticking out of her arm. She asked her 9-year-old daughter to break off the part of the worm outside her arm. There was a narrator in the background explaining why this was necessary, that the worm was a strain on the dreamer. Her daughter broke the part of the worm sticking out. Her daughter could barely stand to look at it while she broke it off.
A worm lives on other things. The upper part of your arms is the major muscles used in lifting heavy objects and doing major work. The color pink represents positive affection which is involved with your daughter of course.
I believe the dream is saying that you are doing too much heavy lifting for your daughter and need to break it off like your daughter breaks the worm off. You don’t want to stop it completely because she is your daughter, but you have to measure how much of the heavy lifting you do for your daughter. The dream indicates the change in the relationship will be hard for both you and your daughter. That is probably because she has wormed her way into your heart.
At the first level of dream interpretation, each living thing represents a part of the dreamer’s psyche. Animals represent basic drives or instincts. It is usually good to have large and powerful animals in your dreams because it means that you have lots of instinctive energy that can be used in your life. The following dream illustrates this principle:
Dream 317: The Moose Lives
A woman’s dreamed that a mother moose gave birth to her calf in the dreamer’s house. The dreamer was in awe of the size of the massive moose. The calf seemed to be in trouble and the dreamer was worried whether it was going to live. The baby recovered eventually and was walking around with no difficulty much to the relief of the dreamer.
Animals in dreams represent our instincts. The dreamer’s house can represent the dreamer herself because it is the framework out of which she lives. A moose is a very strong animal capable of surviving in harsh environments. This dream suggests that the dreamer could handle what life threw at her.
The giving birth to a calf means that the dreamer was investing some of her energy in a new project, that she was creating something strong and durable. A moose is often shown to be in snowy and cold terrain. In any case, the dream saw the dreamer as a strong and adaptable person who could adapt to harsh conditions. She was investing energy in a creative project which was somehow strong and durable.
The dreamer gave me feedback that she considered this interpretation “perfect.”
A woman dreamed that she was underwater in a swimming pool that was a combination of a swimming pool and the ocean. It seemed vast and open on the one hand, but had a ladder and swimming pool accessories on the other hand. In the water with her was a shark with a bloody mouth because he had just been feeding.
The shark made no move towards attacking her. She decided to leave the pool because she could not hold her breath any longer. She climbed up the pool ladder and was intending to go towards her mother and sister.
The shark grabbed her by the right leg as she was leaving the pool/ocean. The shark did not hurt or bite her. The shark only put enough pressure on the leg that she could not leave the ocean/pool.
Water is invariably emotions in dreams. Particularly subconscious emotions. It depends upon what type of body of water it is also.
The open ocean represents the best symbol we have for the vast subconscious. A pool represents our emotions at home because pools are located near homes. The image in the dream sounds like a combination of the ocean and a pool so that they together represent deep subconscious emotions at home.
Each character in a dream represents a part of our mind. Women tend to represent the parts of the dreamers mind that deals with emotions. That her mother and sister are in the dream especially emphasizes that it’s about emotions at home.
Also, the shark having a bloody mouth indicates the color red. The color red goes with the first chakra. The first chakra often deals with family (or tribe) issues. The color red also signals strong emotions such as love and anger (which are present in spades in family issues).
Animals represent our instincts. The shark is an aggressive predator. It is a shadow energy that we all deal with and are uncomfortable with for the most part.
The dream implies that she is immersed in her emotions and dealing with instincts or anger which we all have. We need these instincts to some extent to defend ourselves. The dream indicates that she worries about being overly angry sometimes at home and tries not to dwell on it as it makes her uncomfortable.
When she tries to get out of the pool to go to her mother and sister, the shark grabs her right leg. This is important. It sounded like it didn’t really hurt the dreamer but mainly wanted her to stay in the pool.
This is the dreams way of saying it wants her to deal with these emotions. The dream wanted to help her deal emotionally with others. Even the fact that it grabbed her right leg is significant.
Legs support us. The right side is associated with our conscious intentions. This suggest that the dream wants her to deal with any angers she had at home to help her be supportive to others and to herself.
Possible Details to Wonder About
We know at the first level that this dream is about emotional conflicts at home. At the next and second level of the dream, it is vital to get details from the dreamer. Let me explain.
For example, this dream could involve money conflicts and difficulty leaving home. The term “loan shark” comes to mind. One wonders whether there are money issues.
It is possible that she is subconsciously angry because she feels controlled because someone she is close to her has a financial hold on her (the shark not allowing her to leave the pool is the major clue here). Being in such a situation is especially stressful because if she leaves the current financial arrangements, she might feel that she didn’t have a leg to stand on (the shark would not let go of her leg). While it looks like she might be in a “hostile dependency” situation, getting further details from the dreamer would be vital to fully interpret this interesting dream.
Dream 280: Change Died
A 48-year-old woman dreamed that she bought the house of her son’s mother-in-law. When she arrived at this house, there was a dead baby in a casket with large funeral candles on each side of the casket.
This woman was hyper-critical of her son. His mother-in-law had a troubled background similar to his mother’s personal history. The mother-in-law was, nevertheless, relatively calm, more diplomatic, and less critical than the dreamer.
A house can represent the dreamer because it is the framework out of which one lives. That the dreamer bought the house indicates that the dreamer is aspiring to be a different person, to be more like her son’s mother-in-law. The deceased baby is not good news.
Each character in a dream represents a part of the dreamer’s personality at the first level of dream interpretation. A baby represents a new part of the personality or psyche that the dreamer tried to develop. So a baby represents personal growth on the part of the dreamer.
That the baby is dead signals that her attempt to be different, to be more like the calmer mother-in-law, failed. That it was an attempt to change was highlighted by the funeral candles. Candles imply fire, and fire represents change because fire changes matter into energy.
It is perfect that they were funeral candles. Funeral candles are typically unlit. The unlit candles emphasized that no change had occurred. That it is a funeral scene gives some hope because the dreamer saw her lack of change as a real loss. The dreamer is in mourning which suggests that being more like the mother-in-law personality-wise was something that the dreamer really wanted.
A 22-year-old female college sophomore dreamed that a slick and fast talking lawyer was trying to talk her into investing in a dubious deal. She then had the scene of entering a classroom and the students were voting about whether they should each receive an injection of a drug that would hypnotize the recipient. The dream shifted to her at a busy nightclub. Her mother was in one corner of the nightclub urging her to ingest ketamine, the date rape drug. The dreamer was disgusted with her mother’s advice.
The slick lawyer was the embodiment of the Tricksterarchetype. Archetypes are patterns of thought common in culture that are passed on through human consciousness. The trickster is often a wheeler-dealer manipulator who gets what he wants. The dreamer was influenced too much by tricksters both financially and socially.
The classroom scene emphasized that there were many parts of herself (each character in the dream is a part of the dreamer’s mind) that expressly do not want to be hypnotized or controlled by other. That this occurs in a classroom emphasized that she should not be swayed by others to ignore what she has learned.
The final scene emphasized that her tendency to go along with others wants came from her mother. Mom was excessively giving to the point that she was often used by others with sometimes disaster results. Her disgust was actually a good sign that the dreamer was going to be more careful in social or dating situations.
A nine-year-old boy dreamed he was riding a whale in a large football stadium filled with water. The whale fathomed the waters and did death-defying flips in the air. The boy somehow was unhurt. In fact, he did not even get drenched.
The whale suddenly turned and headed straight for a wall. The boy feared the giant mammal would not be able to stop in time. The dream ended without showing the outcome.
He recently started living with his mother. At his previous residence, there were strict rules and limitations on his range of movement. His mother fostered self-sufficiency and independence in the boy while having flexible and sensible rules that kept him safe.
Water is almost always emotion. Animals represent instinctual and natural drives. A whale in particular represents the desire for powerful emotional experiences. The dream was showing him that he now could experiment with his behavior with proper boundaries.
He fears that he will “hit a wall” with his new-found freedom. The dream ends without that happening. The dream is signaling that he is unlikely to be harmed by his guided and responsible independence.
The dream is trying to reassure him that his new environment is safe. Given the feats the whale was accomplishing at the beginning of the dream, if I were a betting man, I would bet the whale makes that turn in time. When you can ride that mammoth mammal subconscious drive without even getting really wet, it is likely that you are in for a whale of a time.
Dream Image 266: A man dreamt that he could see his mother targeted by a sniper. He was not the sniper, but he had the vision of his mother being in the crosshairs of the rifle’s scope. He woke up just as the sniper was pulling the trigger.
Interpretation: the next day his mother was fired from her job. This dreamer complained that his dreams became true too often. The more one interprets dreams, the more one is impressed at the number of dreams that are predictive. Predictive or precognitive dreams are one of the six main types of dreams.
Dream 260: A 42-year-old man had some interesting dream images. He dreamed he was looking out over a field of devastation. Machines were extracting people buried in the rubble. The people found were almost invariably old. Each previously buried person was then “replaced” in the ground by a teenage rescuer who then was buried alive.
He also dreamt that a blackbird was sitting on his left pointer finger. The bird was gentle but assertive biting his finger so that it was just enough pain to know the bird was there. The bird then started to have baby caterpillars come out of it. He could see the new-born caterpillars crawling toward him.
Interpretation–His abusive mother had recently died and he felt intense conflicted emotions. He came to therapy to rid himself of his mother’s influence. She believed he was unlikely to succeed and warned him to stay away from women.
The setting of destruction reflected his intense feelings. Each character in the dream can represent a part of the dreamer’s psyche or mind. The buried people being replaced by adolescent rescuers shows his feelings that he had to deal with past “old” parts of himself. The teenagers replacing the buried old people signaled his feelings that he felt having to deal with old maternal conflicts were interfering with his developing relatively new parts of himself which in this case were his artistic pursuits. His feeling was why did he have to deal with old conflicts instead of new growth.
Birds often indicate freedom. Blackbirds in particular often are associated with death. He in many ways felt freedom from negativity with his abusive mother’s death. The bird is sitting on the left on his pointing finger because this bird is pointing to subconscious conflicts as the left often represents unconscious involvement.
He feels pain which is the dream’s way of showing that his subconscious pain can give birth to creativity. Caterpillars form a cocoon and are transformed into butterflies. The dream was saying he could use his pain to create beautiful things that would transform his life.
A 58-year-old woman dreamt that she was walking down a long hall with a mirror at the end in a house where she was married for a long time. Her deceased mother suddenly appeared and claimed the house was hers. The dreamer successfully defended her claim to the house. She then saw a hearse back up to the house where three men loaded the casket into the vehicle. She noticed that the casket slide to the right going into the hearse.
A house, especially where the dreamer lived for a long time, frequently represents the dreamer because it is the frame out of which the dreamer lived. The dream pointedly directs her to take a long reflective look at herself (the long hall with the mirror at the end). Her Mother introject appears (the mother instilled in her mind) and claims domininon over the dreamer which the dreamer will not accept.
The implication of the hearse suggests that the mother in her died which in this dream meant that her mother introject, her internalized mother, was deprioritized and would no longer be the major influence in her life. Three is the number of change as three people in a relationship virtually always creates change. Even the casket sliding to the right is significant, as the right is associated with conscious change versus subconconscious (left) change.
Her mother no longer being a major influence in her life would have real daily living consequences which would be positive. She had worked in therapy to escape the mostly negative influence of her mother. This dream indicated that her work in therapy was successful.
This dream was interpreted by the principles in my book at http://www.drstevenfox.com
A 52-year-old woman dreamt that her mother was sitting next to her bed. Her mother yelled at her to “Get Off Your Fat Buttocks (Euphemism) and Dance.” The dreamer noted that her mother was a down-to-earth woman who could be quite crude.
This dream was a combination of a vision dream and a dream where the subconscious talks directly to the dreamer. Her mother had recently died prior to the dream. The dreamer was trying to lose weight and tried various weight loss programs and physical therapy with inconsistent progress. This dream was emphasizing that she needed to exercise to lose weight.
This book shows how an experienced psychologist developed an intuitive dream interpretation method.

I am finishing my personal story and sojourn to health by putting MS into remission with the help of the universe/God. It will be my second book showing that dreams were an important part of that journey. My personal psychology enters into the picture a lot. I basically see years of physical abuse as laying the foundation for having the foundation for contracting the chronic illness of multiple sclerosis. Amazon will publish it first as an ebook. The name of the book will be something like MS Mission Remission: Healing Severe Chronic Multiple Sclerosis Against All Odds.
A 38-year-old woman dreamt that she was going skin diving and had a mask on. The mask was quite prominent on her face. She remembered being pulled down to the bottom of the ocean.
She noted that there was a blackout mark over her mouth as you sometimes see in magazines only the mark is most often over people’s eyes. She had images of her mother flashing in and out during the dream.
She was having a hard time asserting herself at work in a new supervisor position. She noted that her mother had always been very unassertive and passive. Her mother introject appeared throughout the dream because it is the emotional part of herself that she is trying to resolve.
She has a mask over her face that is prominent because she feels like she is hiding and not being true to herself to a large extent. The censor mark or blackout mark is over her mouth because she does not say what she truly means to others because she is too unassertive. She feels pulled to the bottom of the ocean which is her dream’s way of saying that she needs to be true to herself and experience deeper emotion.
The ocean is the best symbol of unconscious emotion that we have. The dream was pointing out that she needs to go deeper into her subconscious emotion to change her so that she allows herself ro speak out. The dream traced the beginnings of her lack of assertiveness to her internalized mother introject. She needed to love herself more to have the confidence to assert herself.
Jung maintained that we each had a higher Self that should always be capitalized. This soulful Self was expressed through the subconscious in dreams. Her Self is asking her to change in this dream.
Life Changing Events Dream 220: Feeling Washed Out
A 28-year-old woman dreamt that she was walking along an ocean boardwalk with her mother. The water rose and engulfed them. She survived, was uncertain what happened to her mother, and felt exhausted.
Water is emotion which in this case overwhelms the dreamer. She recently came out of the closet and revealed that she was in a lesbian relationship. This affected the basis of her emotions (her mother introject) to the point that she was exhausted.
Similar interpretations and explanation of the 40 principles used to interpret these dreams are in my book Dreams: Guide to the Soul at http://www.drstevenfox.com
A 48-year-old man dreamt that he was a police officer. A mother was telling him to write down neatly the changes that needed to occur in her 12-year-old son. She complained that her son was only getting C’s and D’s.
A police officer is a superego figure (as are all law enforcement officers.) The mother in the dream is his mother introject which primarily deals with emotional issues. The son is his immature actions.
He recently was getting in trouble with his wife for swearing too much. She complained that his swearing was ruining their positive emotional atmosphere. She thought it was juvenile (the boy) and she and his mother introject gave his speech low grades (C’s and D’s). The fact that the police officer wrote down the information means that he should take special note of what his mother introject is telling him. His superego or conscience is telling him to clean up (write more legibly, communicate more clearly) his language. Get the messages from your dreams at http://www.drstevenfox.com
A 34-year-old woman dreamt that she had a baby prematurely at twenty weeks past conception. The baby looked like a little man. He looked like a mentor and manager at work that she deeply admired and tried to emulate. The baby was wrapped in a blanket with the ends of the blanket stretched and tied so that the baby was encased in a stretched blanket which hung like a hammock above the incubator.
The baby was not doing well. Finally, the baby had convulsions and fell to the floor. A doctor she liked told her, “Don’t worry, that happens here all the time.” She then heard an overriding voice that sounded like the mentor she admired that said, “I found God and sobriety.”
Dream 195 Interpretation
This women’s mentor took another job and left her workplace about twenty weeks ago. She had to do all the work she performed before and fill in for his position as well. She barely knew enough to do all the functions of her transformed position.
Her being the mother of a 20-week-old baby symbolized the birth of her new work position which was twenty weeks old. She felt that her mentor left his position prematurely before she learned all the necessary functions. The baby represented her new work psyche which she felt had been “stretched and hung out to dry” (similar to the baby in the incubator.)
The good doctor was warning her that she was likely to crash if she continued on her chosen course. The overriding voice from her mentor was advising her to avoid being addicted to work (since he said he found sobriety) and to be more spiritual (he said he found God.) She decided to heed the words of her subconscious. She decided to spend less time at work, look for a new job and pursue her spiritual interests.
A 46-year-old woman dreamed that she was going to the bathroom. The bathroom was filthy. She saw the largest cockroach she had ever seen and felt disgusted. Someone was knocking on the bathroom door and telling her to hurry up. When she opened the door, her mother stomped on the cockroach and urged the dreamer to get on with her life.
Dream 193 Interpretation
The dreamer’s mother recently died. Her sister was the executor of the estate. Her sister arranged the way she administered the trust so that almost all the financial benefits went to herself. The mother was cremated. The mother indicated before she died that she wanted her ashes kept together and buried with a marker on the grave. The dreamer’s sister refused to spend any money on buying a marker for her mother’s grave. The disgust the dreamer felt in the dream toward the cockroach was exactly how she felt about her sister’s actions. The dreamer was totally disgusted that the sister who received all the financial proceeds after her mother’s death was now too cheap to buy a modest marker for her mother’s grave.
A bathroom in a dream is where you get rid of things you no longer need. The mother in the dream is the dreamer’s internalized mother introject. This emotional part of her was engraved in her subconscious by her mother. The dreamer’s mother is urging the dreamer to get over her disgust (hurry up and get out of the bathroom) in graphic terms (mom kills the cockroach in front of the dreamer). The dreamer verified that if her mother were alive, that is what she would ask the dreamer to do, i.e., “Come on dear and put this behind you now because it is not worth it and your sister is not going to change.”
Dream 233: What is the meaning of a swimming pool in a dream?
The dreamer was a 29-year-old coed in Florida. She could never remember her parents getting along with one another. She dreamt that her mother and father were now swimming in their pool at home, playfully splashing about as if they had never divorced or experienced any sort of trauma. She walked inside and saw a tattoo machine and proceeded to tattoo herself, knowing that tattooing yourself can be a very dangerous thing. She put the machine in her hand and carved a heart on her ankle.
And then she awoke, feeling good about her accomplishment!
The dream showed aspects of a dream of desire. I believe that at the first level of dream interpretation, it represented what was occurring within the dreamer. Her emotions (mother introject) and actions (father introject) were integrating. Water in dreams is virtually always subconscious emotion. A swimming pool in particular represents emotions at home since pools are near home.
On the second and interpersonal level, the dream represented a lifelong desire that her parents would have gotten along and that the dreamer’s own marriage was not in separation. She was taking matters into her own hands (the tattoo machine) now. The tattooed heart represented a permanent subconscious promise to herself about what she learned from her parents and from her husband. The fact that the tattoo was on her ankle, a supportive part of anatomy that helps us get somewhere in life, emphasized the emotional support she felt from making this commitment not to forget the painful lessons she learned.
She was making sure that the pain and lessons from parent and relationship troubles was never dismissed or forgotten. The experiences etched into and under her skin the importance of taking care of her heart. The dream was good news in that she was integrating and transforming and was generally happier with her life.
Is this a dream of a visitation from a loved one in a dream like “The Sixth Sense” movie or is the dream symbolic? In what follows, it is usually more comprehensive to consider the dream to be both:
Dream 203: Take Care of Your Little Boy
A 34-year-old man dreamt that his recently deceased mother was hugging his son who was six years old. The mother was nodding approvingly toward the dreamer as she hugged his son.
Dream 203 Interpretation
The dreamer noted that this dream seemed almost real. So real that we could classify this dream as a vision dream. Mother in the dream was his mother introject since each character in a dream represents a part of the dreamer’s mind at the first level of dream interpretation.
If we look at this dream symbolically, his emotions were giving approval as to how he was taking care of his son because the mother introject is often the foundation of emotions. The dreamer recently stopped negative activities and dedicated himself to being a good father to his son. His subconscious approved.
Mom would be proud. If we consider this to be a vision dream, then it simply is what it is. Which one is it?
