Dream 280: Change Died
A 48-year-old woman dreamed that she bought the house of her son’s mother-in-law. When she arrived at this house, there was a dead baby in a casket with large funeral candles on each side of the casket.
This woman was hyper-critical of her son. His mother-in-law had a troubled background similar to his mother’s personal history. The mother-in-law was, nevertheless, relatively calm, more diplomatic, and less critical than the dreamer.
A house can represent the dreamer because it is the framework out of which one lives. That the dreamer bought the house indicates that the dreamer is aspiring to be a different person, to be more like her son’s mother-in-law. The deceased baby is not good news.
Each character in a dream represents a part of the dreamer’s personality at the first level of dream interpretation. A baby represents a new part of the personality or psyche that the dreamer tried to develop. So a baby represents personal growth on the part of the dreamer.
That the baby is dead signals that her attempt to be different, to be more like the calmer mother-in-law, failed. That it was an attempt to change was highlighted by the funeral candles. Candles imply fire, and fire represents change because fire changes matter into energy.
It is perfect that they were funeral candles. Funeral candles are typically unlit. The unlit candles emphasized that no change had occurred. That it is a funeral scene gives some hope because the dreamer saw her lack of change as a real loss. The dreamer is in mourning which suggests that being more like the mother-in-law personality-wise was something that the dreamer really wanted.

Dolphins have amazing right hemisphere-like intelligence and are emotionally sensitive too. Some scientists have suggested that they are like “humans of the sea” and should be treated special. Other fans simply call them “angels of the sea.”
In any case, it is almost always good news when they show up in dreams. First of all, the ocean is the biggest and best symbol of subconscious emotion that we have. Having large mammals or sea creatures in dreams about the ocean indicates that you have a lot of instinctive energy in your subconscious or unconscious.
Dolphins are usually more of a playful and dynamic energy. This contrasts with sharks and killer whales. If the latter show up, it shows subconscious energy, but it is more of a shadow or aggressive energy.
You want to know what types of energies are operating in your subconscious. I once knew someone who knew what kind of general attitude she had towards life by the presence of either killer whales or dolphins in her dreams. It turns out that it’s usually better to have Flipper the dolphin in your dreams than it is to have Shamu the killer whale show up.

Dream 268:Fighting the Zombies
A man dreamed that he died because he was attacked by zombies. His spirit rose above the zombies but he was still able to be in the physical world. He killed one zombie by cutting his throat with garden shears.
A random zombie head somehow moving toward him bit him in the leg. He cut the zombie head in half.
Interpretation: Zombies are almost always depression. Zombies are the “living dead” which is the way major depression can feel. At the first level of dream interpretation, each character represents a part of the dreamer’s psyche or mind. So the dream is announcing that this dream will be about how he handles his depression.
Death in a dream typically means that the dreamer has to change in a major way. In other words, there is a part of the mind that needs to be shelved or “die.” The dream is saying that his new self (his spirit) needs to rise above his depression (the zombies).
The first zombie he kills (the first factor he needs to change) is negative or depressing speech. We know this because speech emanates from the throat. It is interesting that he uses garden shears.
Garden shears get rid of growth (plants). The dream is dramatically saying in regard to his negative speech, that he needs to “cut it out.”
The second zombie is intellectuallization. The dream is saying that he literally is too much in his head. The dream wants him to cut his depressive thinking at least by half.

Dream 267: Riding the Whale
A nine-year-old boy dreamed he was riding a whale in a large football stadium filled with water. The whale fathomed the waters and did death-defying flips in the air. The boy somehow was unhurt. In fact, he did not even get drenched.
The whale suddenly turned and headed straight for a wall. The boy feared the giant mammal would not be able to stop in time. The dream ended without showing the outcome.
He recently started living with his mother. At his previous residence, there were strict rules and limitations on his range of movement. His mother fostered self-sufficiency and independence in the boy while having flexible and sensible rules that kept him safe.
Water is almost always emotion. Animals represent instinctual and natural drives. A whale in particular represents the desire for powerful emotional experiences. The dream was showing him that he now could experiment with his behavior with proper boundaries.
He fears that he will “hit a wall” with his new-found freedom. The dream ends without that happening. The dream is signaling that he is unlikely to be harmed by his guided and responsible independence.
The dream is trying to reassure him that his new environment is safe. Given the feats the whale was accomplishing at the beginning of the dream, if I were a betting man, I would bet the whale makes that turn in time. When you can ride that mammoth mammal subconscious drive without even getting really wet, it is likely that you are in for a whale of a time.

Dreamlike image 265:
Why is this image of lightning striking a tree so impressive? It is because of the meaning of the different elements of the image in dreams or in our subconscious. Lightning is electric fire.
Fire subconsciously is registered as change because fire changes matter into energy. Lightning is dramatic fire or fire on steroids. Lightning is dramatic change that occurs instantly.
Trees unconsciously are seen by the mind as an image of integration since the tree opens to the sky, goes underground deeply and is here on the level with us. So a tree represents growth and integration of the three levels of the mind representing, respectively, the superego, the unconscious, and the conscious mind. It is almost always a positive sign when trees enter the dream scenery.
So a healthy tree being struck by lightning means that dramatic and instantaneous change has occurred which is integrative to the person. In other words, it is almost always good news although it is certain to stressful. The rapidity of the change is dramatic and affects the whole person and these transformative changes are likely to be positive although the person going through it is likely to be disoriented trying to adjust to it. Even good change takes a person some time to adapt to it.

Here are the best-selling new age dream books:
The dreamer proceeded to the back of a car and simultaneously saw his best girlfriend from high school and his worst and most evil girlfriend walking hand in hand down the sidewalk in front of the car. When the dreamer went to the back of the car, David hugged him and said “You are so far gone!”
Interpretation:Being in a car parked at night means that you have been subconsciously passive. Night time goes with inactivity and passivity. Darkness usually represents the subconscious while the brightness of day represents more conscious and more active parts of the psyche.
Each character in the dream represents a different part of the dreamer’s mind or psyche. Men tend to go with more active parts of the mind while women usually represent more emotional parts of the psyche. He was being beckoned by an active part of his psyche, David, to be more active.
Two characters in a dream hugging indicates that those two parts of the psyche are integrating. The dream wanted him to integrate action into his life more.
The good girlfriend represented more positive emotional parts of himself while the evil girlfriend represented his shadow emotions.
He was very resistant to recognizing and using shadow emotions in his life. In therapy, it was clear he needed to use some of the aggressive shadow emotions because these emotions end up being your “get up and go.” It was a good sign that his positive emotions (the good girlfriend) was holding hands with shadow emotions (the evil girlfriend) because this indicated some beginning integration.
This statement that “You are so far gone!” was actually a compliment. It meant that his new outlook of being willing to be more assertive in seeking his goals was firmly established. He would never return to being his old self.

A forty-two-year-old man dreamt that about a police car with two beautiful blonde twenty-something women in the front seat. Each woman was holding and consoling a pig. The back doors of the police car were wide open.
Women most often represent emotions in dreams. Ideal model women, like in this dream, are animas that are frequently involved in the dreamer’s healing. Cops are often referred to on the streets as “pigs.”
Policemen and soldiers usually represent the heroic masculine archetype as soldiers are willing to die for their country and the police motto is “to serve and protect.” This dream is good news as his positive emotions (the animas) are in control of his aggressive (“pig”) instincts.
Police usually have people they arrest in the back seat. That the back doors were open was showing that he relaxed his strict superego. This was indeed the case as he was avoiding being aggressive with his teenage sons and was giving them somewhat more freedom from supervision. He recently returned from combat and was learning to be a more reasonable and patient parent.

Dream 261: A 28-year-old woman dreamed that she and other airport security were holding back a crowd of faceless people who were coming through the walls of a terminal liquor bar. She then envisioned the image of a rooster arrayed with sparkling jewelry and rhinestones. When she paid rapt attention to it, the rooster died.
Interpretation: She was an airport policewoman. She was bored with her job. She had a few drinks each day after work.
Each character in the dream is a part of the dreamer’s psyche at the first level. Faceless people usually represent parts of the mind that the dreamer does not know. Her superego or conscience is worried that her drinking to reduce her boredom may be unleashing more unruly parts of her mind.
The message of the rhinestone rooster is clear. The rooster is over-adorned to the point of being ridiculous. The dream is dramatically saying “Don’t get too cocky or it could be the end of you.”
She recently felt conflicted because her supervisor praised her work while she internally felt bored. She felt bored, but the dream may be warning her to not go along with her instinct (the animal instinct, the rooster) to show off (which may be the attitude of her subconscious toward her considering quitting her job). This latter view is speculative because it is at the second or interpersonal level of dream interpretation where accuracy drops because only the dreamer has full knowledge of details at the second level.

Dream 259: An eighteen-year-old male dreamed that he was in a house with a family. They all went upstairs to find the body of a dead young man underneath a bed. Everyone in the family was very upset.
Interpretation: He recently found out that his best friend moved away and no longer had contact with the dreamer because he was addicted to crack cocaine. The dreamer was close to his friend’s family who said they considered him to be part of the family. The subconscious treats the loss of a close friendship as equal to death.
The above is dream interpretation at the second or interpersonal level. The interpreter has to know what is going on in the dreamer’s life at this level. At the first level, each character in the dream represents a part of the dreamer’s psyche or mind. This is both usually more difficult and often more rewarding than the interpersonal level which is more surface circumstances than unconscious processes.
At the first level of dream interpretation, the family represented the various parts of his mind that wanted membership in his best friend’s family. The young man’s dead body symbolized his hope that he would actually be a part of a created loving family was dead. He was very upset by his friend’s addiction. When, as in this case, both levels of dream interpretation are true, we say that dream condensation occurred.
Incidentally, alcohol decreases dreams and marijuana virtually eliminates dreams.

Dream 258: A 31-year-old woman dreamt that she was a counselor to dorms full of kids ages sixteen to twenty-something years old. Parents were visiting the dorms that day. A female coach sans windbreaker and athletic clothes told her that she had spoken to three young men in one of the dorm rooms. They told her that the dreamer’s legs were not fat, but they advised that the dreamer should shave her legs.
Interpretation: Each character in the dream can be a part of the dreamer’s mind or psyche. Male figures tend to go with actions while women are usually associated more with the dreamer’s emotions. The dorms full of kids show that the dream is going to talk about her development socially (these ages are critical in social and sexual behavior).
Parents visiting indicates that the subconscious will be discussing parental influence on her social development. That she is a counselor indicates that the dream wants to speak to the psychologically insightful part of her. The female coach is interesting because we think it is primarily emotional in nature, but the athleticism this part of the mind brings to the table shows that the unconscious is going to be focusing on how her emotions affect her actions.
The three young men indicate that the dream wants her actions to change (three is the number of instability since three people in a relationship are unstable.) They specifically give the coach of her emotions the message that her inherent appearance is fine (her legs are not fat), but she should take action to improve her situation. The message directly says that she needs to rid herself of hairy situations that she does not need, i.e., shave her legs.
It is notable that legs are supportive and get us where we need to go. Her subconscious wants her to accept herself and get rid of hairy situations she lets grow on her that interfere with her getting to where she needs to go.

The 16-year-old teenager dreamt that he was in Africa. There was a huge pile of mostly dead bodies in a large pit. They found a ten-year-old black girl who was mostly just a head and a spinal cord. The dreamer helped the doctors put the girl in an ambulance and accompanied her to the hospital, convinced that she could be saved.
At some point on the trip to the hospital in the back of the ambulance, the girl turned to the dreamer and said a single word which was “Mum.”
Interpretation– At the first level, each character in the dream represents a part of your psyche. Men often go more with an action part of the mind, while women represent emotional parts of the psyche. The darker the skin, the more soul is being summoned.
The setting of the dream is often telling you what it is going to discuss in the dream. In this case, it was literally telling you how, at the age of sixteen, life was pretty much “the pits” (the deep hole full of bodies). Dead bodies show that parts of the psyche have radically changed or “died.”
As part of the massive changes occurring within the dreamer, the dream is trying to point to what needs to change emotionally (it picks out a deformed girl). The girl is immature (below the dreamer’s age) and consists of only a nervous system, a brain and a spinal cord. This is the dream’s way of saying that the dreamer is too much in the head and intellectual, and not dealing with emotions.
The fact that there are doctors and an ambulance indicates that this part of the emotions is in need of emergency healing.
The single word “mum” is important. The dream was saying that the dreamer is not speaking out emotionally enough, i.e., that “mum” is the word. It is speculative, because I do not know the dreamer well enough, but I wonder if there is something significant occurring in the dreamer’s relationship to mom=mum. In any case, it is highly likely that the dream is calling for the dreamer to express more soulful emotions and leave many old parts of the mind behind. It specifically wants the dreamer to speak out in a meaningful and emotional way more.
This dream was interpreted using principles from my book, Dreams: Guide to the Soul which is at http://www.drstevenfox.com
Dream 256: A 34-year-old woman dreamt that she was in bed with her ex-husband. She heard a knock at their bedroom door and she went to answer. Once she opened the door she felt a little jello hands trying to pull her gently out the door. She then saw a dark figure lean over and place a gift at her feet.
Interpretation: Her husband had been calling the shots regarding custody of the children and having her pay support to him. She recently decided after therapy to become assertive and get court orders that made her an equal parent in the relationship. The figure at the door was her shadow trying to move her gently away from her ex. She decided it was time to change her relationship with him.
The little jello hands are emphasizing her shadow is not trying to force her into action but his giving her encouragement to move away from her ex. Her shadow then appeared directly to place a gift at her feet. She was going to court the next day and it was expected by everyone that it would be settled on much more favorable terms towards her so that she was an equal.
The shadow was encouraging her because she was making moves away from the manipulative ex-husband. The shadow was surmising that she would receive a gift by the way of the court orders the next day which turned out to be accurate. She more or less lived happily ever after.

The Shadow is only dangerous when other structures are not available to positively direct its behavior. If one is not in contact at all with his or her Shadow, there is danger that it may become frustrated and take over the personality because the rest of the person is not considering the Shadow’s input. The Shadow can be dangerous in this circumstance because reasonable limits are not being put upon it by other subconscious entities. When you’ve had it up to your ears in frustration, the Shadow will remove you from the situation by whatever means are available. This accounts for the situations where you did something in your own best interest in such a dramatic way that later you can hardly believe you did it. The Shadow is protective in focusing on self-survival and the person’s own best self-interests.
There is so much more in the book at http://www.drstevenfox.com about the shadow which is often key to change.
Interpretation– She dreaded her job at the airport which was tedious, regimented, and boring. She had these same feelings toward the military. Her husband represents an action part of her psyche.
The jet crashing into the airport was advising her to find a different job because she was “burned out” and getting ready to crash regarding her job. This was the meaning of the dream at the first level, where every character is symbolic of either an action part (male) or emotional part (female) of the mind.
The dream was a predictive dream as well as being a symbolic dream. Two weeks after she had this dream, her husband was mobilized to serve in Iraq in real life. This is the interpersonal level of the dream. When both levels are true, which is usually true, we say that the dream condenses on itself.
How can dreams be predictive of the future? I believe there is something inherent in the nature of human consciousness that gets transmitted to all of humanity. There are undiscovered quantum physics principles which will one day explain this phenomenon. It may be true as emphasized in Eastern religions that “we are all one.”
This dream was interpreted using principles from my book at http://www.drstevenfox.com
Dream 256: A 52-year-old woman dreamed that she had sex with a Catholic priest. She then saw the image of a Catholic nun. She then saw the image of a female Reike energy healer that she knew. This healer looked amazingly attractive and had glorious angel wings.
Interpretation– This dream is all about spirituality. She was raised Catholic. Her having sex with a priest indicates that she wants to actively integrate spirituality into her life (men are associated with action parts of the psyche while women tend to go with more emotional parts). The nun image was present because she emotionally felt she needed more spirituality in her life.
The female Reike healer had an amazing life story. She spent seven years in a wheelchair before healing herself with energy work. The image of the healer with angel wings is numinous (inspiring transcendental sacred awe in the beholder). She was amazingly attractive because she was an ideal woman, an anima figure, which is associated with healing. She wanted an active and inspired spirituality that helped heal people. The dream was symbolic of spirituality instilled in her youth that she wanted to activate to heal others through Divine power.

Dream 255: A 28-year-old woman dreamt that her abusive boyfriend hit her dog over the head with a shovel. The dog was dead. He was burying the dog. She wanted to stop the burial because the dog might still be alive.
Interpretation– Each person and animal in a dream represents part of the person’s mind. Animals typically represent basic instincts. Dogs in particular usually represent internal tendencies to be loyal and protective. The dream was saying that her experience with her abusive boyfriend had damaged her ability to feel protected and loyal towards men. That the dog might still be alive indicated that her trust of men was damaged, but that she might be able to heal from this traumatic experience.

Dream 254: A 48-year-old woman dreamt that she was walking on the sidewalk in front of the house where she was raised. In front of her were her mother and an attractive woman leading the way. She realized that she did not know where her car was. Suddenly, she was concerned because she did not know if her horse won the horse race.
Interpretation– The fact that she and the others were walking in front of the house she was raised in, indicates that deep subconscious factors were involved. Each character in the dream is a part of her psyche. Her mother represents her mother introject, would you as the mother inside her mind which takes care of herself and others. The attractive woman is an anima figure, an idealized woman who is the major part of her psyche that would be involved in dating relationships.
A car is how you get somewhere in life. Realizing that she does not know where it was indicated that she did not know where she was going in life. Horses frequently symbolize female sexual power. Wondering whether her horse won the race was equivalent to dreaming if the man she was dating was the right man for her. They had been involved for nine months, and she seemed ambivalent.

A 34-year-old man dreamt of a tornado over the ocean creating a funnel of water. He was viewing the scene through his omniscient observer-ego. Suddenly two helicopters appeared. One was well above the top of the funnel while the other helicopter was well below the top of the funnel. Each of them fired a missile at the base of the funnel which destroyed it and removed its destructive potential.
Interpretation– He returned from Afghanistan with severe post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He was losing his temper with his family and their children so often that they felt like they “were walking on eggshells.” In dreams, water is emotions and a tornado is a powerful and potentially destructive natural force which in this case is anger. Fire in dreams is change or transformation. Missiles explode and create fire, i.e. change.
Changes in elevation in dreams often represent different levels of consciousness. Lower levels address practical and everyday needs while higher levels typically address higher or even spiritual aspirations especially when flight is involved. Helicopters are strongly identified with the military.
Helicopters are a type of flight that is methodical, strategic and calculating. The dream indicated that he had totally changed. He had methodically trained himself to eliminate uncontrolled natural forces, i.e., anger, from family interactions. The dream was recognizing his radical changes on both higher and lower levels of consciousness.
Use dreams to help get in touch with emotions at http://www.drstevenfox.com
Interpretation– He was debating whether to return to a long-term affair. He did not want to leave his wife because of his young daughter. He felt conflicted, but felt that his life was entwined with the woman he was having an affair with. He thought it was likely that he would not stay married to his wife if he did not have some outlet for his sexuality.
Horses often represent female sexual power. The wife in his dream was his emotions, as a significant female partner and especially a wife represents primary current emotions. In dreams, a person, animal, or spirit is a part of the dreamer’s psyche. Men tend to go with actions while women go more often with emotional parts of the mind.
Water is almost invariably emotion in dreams, and urine is negative emotions. The dream is screaming that he is forcing himself to endure negative emotions to experience female sexual power (the horse). There is a price to pay emotionally for being involved in the affair.

Dream 247: Finding Myself
A 19-year-old male dreamt that he was watching a same-aged friend drive his car north to Alaska. This friend was an exceedingly “nice guy” who was not very assertive. In the backseat were friends who were very assertive and were the same age as he.
The people in the back seat were a couple who were close to one another.
He somehow knew the nice guy driver was headed to Alaska. He envisioned that these three were going to meet some beautiful women he had always wanted to date.
The dreamer was in therapy because he lost his temper too often and yelled at others. He had a history of not being assertive. When he didn't get what he wanted and others ran over him, he blew up and lost friends.
The too nice male driving the car was the action part of himself that was not assertive enough. He is driving because that part of his psyche commands his actions. The male and female in the back of the car were assertive action and assertive emotional parts of his mind.
The dream is including them to show that he has these potential realities inside his psyche. That they are a couple who get along indicates that it is possible for him to integrate his assertive actions with assertive emotions. Since women most often go with emotions, the beautiful women in Alaska represented new and attractive ways of dealing with others emotionally.
For him, Alaska was a serene and beautiful place. Thinking of Alaska, he saw a tranquil white glow. White is the combination of all the other colors and is considered the most spiritual color. The dream was assuring him that being assertive emotionally in interactions was spiritually sound.

I rejoice that readers of my book “get it.” I love it when people I do not know, come up to me, and say “this is my dream and this is what you are going to think about it.” They are almost always close to what I would have said which shows me that they truly understood and integrated my book into their dream interpretations.
Below is a passage from my book about the Shadow. The Shadow archetype is usually the main part of the psyche that changes when psychotherapy is successful.
The Shadow is only dangerous when other structures are not available to positively direct its behavior. If one is not in contact at all with his or her Shadow, there is danger that it may become frustrated and take over the personality because the rest of the person is not considering the Shadow’s input. The Shadow is dangerous in this circumstance because reasonable limits are not being put upon it by other subconscious entities.

Dream 245: I Will Not Be Like My Mother
A 58-year-old woman dreamt that she was walking down a long hall with a mirror at the end in a house where she was married for a long time. Her deceased mother suddenly appeared and claimed the house was hers. The dreamer successfully defended her claim to the house. She then saw a hearse back up to the house where three men loaded the casket into the vehicle. She noticed that the casket slide to the right going into the hearse.
A house, especially where the dreamer lived for a long time, frequently represents the dreamer because it is the frame out of which the dreamer lived. The dream pointedly directs her to take a long reflective look at herself (the long hall with the mirror at the end). Her Mother introject appears (the mother instilled in her mind) and claims domininon over the dreamer which the dreamer will not accept.
The implication of the hearse suggests that the mother in her died which in this dream meant that her mother introject, her internalized mother, was deprioritized and would no longer be the major influence in her life. Three is the number of change as three people in a relationship virtually always creates change. Even the casket sliding to the right is significant, as the right is associated with conscious change versus subconconscious (left) change.
Her mother no longer being a major influence in her life would have real daily living consequences which would be positive. She had worked in therapy to escape the mostly negative influence of her mother. This dream indicated that her work in therapy was successful.
This dream was interpreted by the principles in my book at http://www.drstevenfox.com
A 52-year-old woman dreamt that her mother was sitting next to her bed. Her mother yelled at her to “Get Off Your Fat Buttocks (Euphemism) and Dance.” The dreamer noted that her mother was a down-to-earth woman who could be quite crude.
This dream was a combination of a vision dream and a dream where the subconscious talks directly to the dreamer. Her mother had recently died prior to the dream. The dreamer was trying to lose weight and tried various weight loss programs and physical therapy with inconsistent progress. This dream was emphasizing that she needed to exercise to lose weight.

Predictive dreams or precognitive dreams may be the source of déjà vu experiences. Deja vu experiences tend to be of common place happenings. That is because you may have had a predictive dream that you do not remember because it involved a daily activity and was not an exciting or impressive dream you would be more likely to remember. Deja vu happens when you are doing an activity and then remember the dream that predicted it because it is happening before your eyes. If you remembered the dream before, it would not feel like déjà vu.Improve your karma with Dreams: Guide to the Soul at http://www.drstevenfox.com
A 34-year-old woman dreamt that she was in the house where she previously was married. There was a reunion of the men she had known and dated in her life. She remembered that she was supposed to take koolaid out to the yard for the men that had been in her life previously.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a small black snake dart into the house. She then saw herself in the kitchen preparing a meal. All of the sudden she saw a golden snake raise its hooded head towards her.
The serpent went to the front door and then turned toward her. The cobra snake looked directly at her. It seemed to smile as if urging her to follow the serpent out of the house.
A house can represent the dreamer because it is the framework of which she lives. The house in this dream was the house where she was married to an extremely abusive man. She had a history of being in abusive relationships.
The koolaid in the dream is liquid and liquids tend to be emotion in dreams. The dream was literally saying that she “drank the koolaid”and regarding reality as presented to her by abusive men. The black snake darting into the house represented negative change.
Snakes are one of the few animals to completely shed their skin and so represent transformation or change. That the snake was black and sneaky indicated that the changes that occurred within this marriage (the house where she lived when married to the abuser) were negative as black tends to go with depressed or negative emotions. The golden snake is an entirely different story.
The golden snake as presented in the dream is almost majestic in his actions and seems beneficial. Gold or yellow goes with the solar plexus chakra which is strongly related to self-esteem. That she was in the kitchen preparing a meal indicated that she needed to find new ways to nurture herself.
Food in a dream is psychological nurture and the kitchen is a place of creativity. She needed to follow her golden snake into the future to keep her self-esteem. An animal or snake is instinct, and the dream is going out of its way to show that it is her instincts that are telling her to get out of the relationship
Dream 242: That Medal Isn’t Worth Much
A 59-year-old man dreamt that he was in an auditorium at an awards ceremony. The setting was a combination of his high school and work place auditorium. He dreamt that he received a large Nazi medal in recognition of his years of work. After receiving the metal, as he made his way back to his auditorium seat, the medal shrank in size and eventually became a very small tin
badge that looked like it came out of a cracker jack box.
The setting of the dream often indicates what area of the person’s life the dream is going to discuss. High schools are often used by the dream to mean that it is a learning situation for your “higher self.” He was forced to retire from a high level executive job because of a disability. He often had nightmares about having to quit work. The dream was saying that the recognition that he received from his workplace (the medal) was dubious and was no longer of value to him so that he should take his seat with the general population (in the auditorium).

A 62-year-old woman dreamt that she was on an acute care ward because she had a heart attack. She was watching the monitor to which she was connected and saw it “flatline.” She realized that she died. Strangely, she felt overjoyed.
She dated a boyfriend who was ambivalent about leaving his long-term cohabitant, who did not love him. His current live-in girlfriend was using him for his money. The dreamer was frustrated that she could never get him to see that it was in his best interest to leave her and dwell with the dreamer.
The dream used a heart attack to show her heart was broken. The machine was giving a reading of the condition of her heart. The flat line in this case indicates stability and harmony as it is not fluctuating wildly.
The fact that she died means that her old way of handling matters of the heart died. She decided to assert herself and tell him exactly how she felt. He responded positively and their relationship changed in a major way. She was overjoyed with their new relationship which was now filled with meaningful and truthful discussions.

The dream is the small hidden door in the deepest and most intimate sanctum of the soul, which opens to that primeval cosmic night that was soul long before there was conscious ego and will be soul far beyond what a conscious ego could ever reach.
In a nonpsychotic person, the subconscious tries to protect the person and even gives advice during dreams. This appears to especially be the case with drugs. I have never seen a situation where the dream showed approval for hard drug abuse.
A 28-year-old woman dreamed that she was spitting out shards of glass. Crystal meth is sometimes called “glass.” She recently was trying to detox herself from crystal meth. Spit is a form of water. Water almost always represents emotion.
The act of spitting indicates that the person needs to expel something from the body. The dream was advising her to throw crystal meth out of her body. The dream especially emphasized the negative effect crystal meth was having on her emotions.

Image Rehearsal Therapy (IRT) helps people to change nightmares into less disturbing dreams. The process involves having the person first write the nightmare down in detail. Then they think of changing the dream to a pleasant image. Immediately before going to sleep, they visualize the pleasant scene.
Dreams most often use current day residue, events of the day that may have links back to earlier events in our lives. Visualizing the pleasant scene during the day will make it more likely that we will dream about it. This is especially likely if the positive scene is visualized immediately before going to sleep.
For example, if a person had a repetitive nightmare such as being torn apart by wild wolves, they would be asked to create a more positive and even comforting image. Having the person visualize they are surrounded by loving puppies increases the chance of positive changes in the dream. Basically, seeing repetitive nightmares as a bad habit that can be influenced by changing the images in the dreamer’s mind is helpful.
Post traumatic stress dreams, dreams that show a catastrophic event that is a memory of what actually occurred in real life, can be “dulled” by visualization. I have had some success with having people visualize that the scene happened, but that it is like watching an old and faded movie in the distance with faint sound. I find this procedure has the effect of reducing the challenge of changing a traumatic event that occurred in life. Realistic trauma is often more likely to respond to realistic imagery that “honors” the fact that the event occurred.
☆Getting answers from dreams (dream incubation) is described in chapter 34 of my book at http://www.drstevenfox.com
DREAM 240: Stop Hurting Your Boyfriend and Get a Job
A 28-year-old woman dreamt that she was teleported to Pakistan and met a Pakistani woman in a tent. The Pakistani woman was very kind, attractive, and personable. They talked in the tent for a long time. The dreamer saw images of lips all around her. She then saw the Pakistani woman kiss her on the cheek.
The dream then shifted to her being a passenger in a helicopter piloted by a policeman. They went over major mountains until they arrived home safely.
The dreamer had a Pakistani woman friend who was emotionally mature and considerate. The dreamer recently was inconsiderate and hurtful towards her boyfriend. The images of lips all around your indicated that she needed to be more careful in what she said. The Pakistani woman kissing her on the cheek indicated that she emotionally wanted to integrate the Pakistanis woman’s qualities (emotions) into her own personality.
A policeman often represents the heroic masculine archetype. The heroic masculine is the part of a dreamer’s personality that typically effects therapeutic change in the dreamers life. A police officer also represents the superego or conscience to some degree. She felt guilty that she lived at home with her mother and had no job while her mother work hard at a low paying job.
Mountains often represent obstacles in the dreamers life. The challenge that the dreamer had to surmount was getting a job. Males are typically action figures and the heroic masculine is almost always very helpful.
The dream indicated that the action part of herself, the male heroic masculine, was going to help her surmount the dreamer’s goal of getting a job. She was getting ready to fly in a controlled and very practical way. She could decide exactly where she wanted to land, which is the reason a helicopter was used by the dream.

I am finishing my personal story and sojourn to health by putting MS into remission with the help of the universe/God. It will be my second book showing that dreams were an important part of that journey. My personal psychology enters into the picture a lot. I basically see years of physical abuse as laying the foundation for having the foundation for contracting the chronic illness of multiple sclerosis. Amazon will publish it first as an ebook. The name of the book will be something like MS Mission Remission: Healing Severe Chronic Multiple Sclerosis Against All Odds.

A 16-year-old teenager dreamt that she was driving a white car. Next to her on the seat was Chucky who was a malicious and torturous puppet. She felt like she could stay friends with him and he would not hurt her as long as she treated him a certain way. She did not want to get involved with him, but did not want to insult him either.
She was bisexual. On the basis of this dream, I asked her if she found herself preferring girls more now. She indicated that indeed was the case. She then talked about how an acquaintance that she really didn’t know very well asked her out for a date when she was sitting in her car at a grocery store.
The boy was seen by her peers as repulsive and no one liked him. She let him down easy and made up some excuse. She was careful not to offend him.
She felt that she had to handle her sexuality in a similar way in the sense that she now preferred girls, although being bisexual this preference would change from time to time. She felt even though she now preferred girls that she had to treat a boys that were interested in her a certain way or face consequences. She was hurt too many times by men which might explain the torturous Chucky puppet character. It is interesting that it was a puppet because the part of her that related to males felt like an imposter to some degree at the current time.

IN Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea. 5
So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round:
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills
Where blossom’d many an incense-bearing tree;
And here were forests ancient as the hills, 10
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.
But O, that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover!
A savage place! as holy and enchanted
As e’er beneath a waning moon was haunted 15
By woman wailing for her demon-lover!
And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,
As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,
A mighty fountain momently was forced;
Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst 20
Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,
Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher’s flail:
And ‘mid these dancing rocks at once and ever
It flung up momently the sacred river.
Five miles meandering with a mazy motion 25
Through wood and dale the sacred river ran,
Then reach’d the caverns measureless to man,
And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean:
And ‘mid this tumult Kubla heard from far
Ancestral voices prophesying war! 30
The shadow of the dome of pleasure
Floated midway on the waves;
Where was heard the mingled measure
From the fountain and the caves.
It was a miracle of rare device, 35
A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice!
A damsel with a dulcimer
In a vision once I saw:
It was an Abyssinian maid,
And on her dulcimer she play’d, 40
Singing of Mount Abora.
Could I revive within me,
Her symphony and song,
To such a deep delight ‘twould win me,
That with music loud and long, 45
I would build that dome in air,
That sunny dome! those caves of ice!
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware! Beware!
His flashing eyes, his floating hair! 50
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread,
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.

A 38-year-old alcoholic man dreamt of a large tornado approaching a field that was full of snakes. The tornado was coming towards him. He was at the farm of some very supportive grandparents.
As it got closer to him he noticed that he had snakes inside of himself because he reached inside his mouth and pulled out snake after snake. Eventually he pulled out a line of very small scorpions that he killed as each one came out.
A tornado represents a massive confusion and chaos in one’s life. It is a powerful natural force that can change your life. Snakes represent change and transformation because they are one of the few animals that completely sheds its skin.
That the tornado was coming towards his supportive grandparents farm indicated that there was chaos and confusion in his life that threatened to completely disrupt his support. Pulling the snakes out of his mouth indicated that he needed to change what he put into his mouth. The dream is referring to drinking since we consume alcohol by mouth.
He was a very cynical man who let out short offensive comments. The dream literally was saying that he had to kill the little things coming out of his mouth. The little comments he made were like scorpions which are aggressive creatures.

Dream 237: I’m Not Going to Abuse Substances
A 42-year-old woman dreamt that she was on a horse with her best friend who was a dentist now. The horse stumbled and the dreamer fell down an Alice-in-Wonderland hole. She then was with a hostile ex-husband who was in bed with her.
There was a man who was dark and shadowy at the end of the bed who pointed a gun at her and shot her. She then was in a medieval banquet hall. It was filled with her friends and friends of her daughter.
Horses are often a symbol of female sexual power or vitality. Having her best friend in the dream was a way of doubling the dreamer. That her friend is now a dentist indicated that healing, physical healing, was on the table.
Falling into the Alice-in-Wonderland hole meant that her reality completely changed. That she was with an ex-husband who she was alcoholic with during the time she was with him was significant. In the dream, she was shot by her shadow which indicated that she was not going to return to her previous ways of drinking and being addicted.
At the time of the dream, she had started to take back pain pills because she had injured her back severely. The dream indicated her subconscious worried that she might abuse substances. The last scene indicates that she need not worry. She was treated to a banquet which was compensation for her subconscious being too severe in worrying about substance dependence.

A freshman 14 yr old teenager dreamt that she pushed her way down a hall to a pretty girl and shoved her out-of-the-way. The girl was an attractive and popular cheerleader. After the dreamer pushed past the pretty cheerleader, she asked the dreamer, “Why did you do that?” She then entered a very formal setting where people dressed elegantly. There was no food being served at the tables, but she felt like it was an awards ceremony. As she left, there were two high school football players dressed in tuxedos. They gave her a very formal and large white napkins.
She was rather cool to others, especially boys. She was very assertive/aggressive. She dressed flamboyantly in a modern punk rock aesthetic. She would even sometimes get physical with boys.
The dream was using the cheerleader to represent the part of herself that was more like a feminine anima or ideal teenage girl. The dream showed a formal setting to emphasize that she would be rewarded for changing her behavior towards being more polite and considerate. The two football players giving her a white napkin was significant.
White is the most spiritual color. Football players are symbols of the heroic masculine because they’re willing to sacrifice for the team. Their handing her a large white napkin emphasized that she needed to clean up her act.

“This is what she sent me this morning: “Like I’d be sleeping but I’m conscious that I’m awake and then I start seeing a ghost and I scream but nothing comes out and I’m completely paralyzed and I try waking up but it doesn’t work and when I wake up I’m crying like crazy”. What does this mean exactly?”
Answer:It sounds like she is having night terrors due to “waking up” in a dream state. The dream state is called REM (for Rapid Eye Movements because your eyes are moving we think the way they would if the dream were actually happening). During REM, you lose muscle tone and are functionally paralyzed from the neck down.
We believe the body loses muscle tone because you would act out the dream otherwise and get hurt. There have been people who did not lose muscle tone during sleep–they were in danger because they were walking and moving while asleep. I believe it is likely that she woke up in A REM state and that is why she could not move. The condition between sleep and waking up is called hypnagogia. It is during this time one can have a hypnagogic hallucination.
Her seeing the ghost is a “dream hallucination” or hypnagogic hallucination. She is actually having an awake dream which can be quite terrifying and is often called “night terrors.” Simply keeping an indirect light on will often prevent the night terrors. I believe this may be because it is more possible to wake yourself up from the dream hallucination.
An alternative may be to instruct yourself before going to sleep that if the dream paralysis/ hallucination happens again, that you can protect yourself by simply closing your eyes and going to sleep. Sometimes by not fighting the dream, you are less likely to induce the fear response. Sleep is, after all, protective.

Dream 234: Descending Into Hell
A 28-year old man dreamt that a pet cat was attacking and chewing on his neck. The scene then shifted to a large pit. He was standing to the side of a platform that was being lowered into the bowels of the pit. There were many people stacked on top of one another sideways with their feet toward the dreamer.
He eventually saw that the platform was descending into hell. Fire raged all about them. A great sucking force was also starting to pull him down into the ghastly pit. He resisted with all his might and reached up to his wife who was at home in bed. She refused to help him.
Dream 234 Interpretation
Family pets are associated with affections. Dogs tend to go with men. Cats tend to go with women. His wife was angry with him to the point that she could bite his head off.
The people on the platform he recognized in his own words as parts of himself “that needed to go to hell.” Feet are a supportive part of the body. The dream was emphasizing feet to show that providing psychological support to himself and his family (a wife and two sons) was a central issue.
Fire indicates the need for change as fire transforms matter into energy. He had many controlling and intimidating parts of himself that he needed to extricate from his psyche. These parts developed in response to abuse from his father and stepfathers. The dream makes a point of indicating that these threatening parts “sucked” and threatened to ruin the marriage (his wife was in bed at home). In any case, his wife had it with him and he would have to change through his efforts and not rely on her to pull him through.
