Dream 462: This repetitive boring job is bad for my mental and physical health
A man had the following dream:
“I dreamt that I had an alcoholic drink of either Whiskey or Brandy. The beverage was strange in that it had two different kinds of tastes in it. There was a before taste at the beginning and an after taste at the end.
The truth is I do not drink any alcohol at all in my waking life, and not even on special occasions as I think alcohol tastes bad for one and the other is for health reasons.
There was a cool to the taste in the beginning and a warmer or hotter after taste, I think the after taste was slightly bitter, I am not sure though. All I know is that it changed my perception and mind set.
As it made me feel sour all day as I was depressed and frustrated at work and complaining to people at work that I feel like a robot.
Alcohol is also referred to as “spirits” sometimes and it is liquid (emotions) so I wonder if you were engaging in an emotion and/or behavior that was addictive or repetitive that you initially liked, but then it was almost too much to swallow and left a bad taste in your mouth. This is a random guess made with a small amount of information.
Sounds like the job was ok to begin with, but it became repetitive and is bad for your physical and mental health, much like alcohol if you do it too much for too long.

A woman dreamed that she was walking along and she noticed the diamond was missing from her finger. She thought she had lost it. A young boy then came up to her with the ring and gave the ring back to her.
Each character in the dream represents a different part of the dreamer’s mind at the first level of dream interpretation. Men tend to go with actions or a more action-oriented part of the mind. Women tend to go more with an emotional part of the psyche.
The maturity level of the character in the dream usually represents how developed either the action or the emotion is. That it was a young boy who returns the ring to her means that she is probably taking new action to confirm a commitment, an allegiance, a loyalty, a close relationship, or even a job.
It is unknown whether this dream describes the current state of affairs or whether the dream is predictive. Only the dreamer will be able to discern the full meaning of this dream.

“I was walking around a mall alone. I was going around and around the same shops like I was trying to find a special one but never could. Then I finally found it and it looked like a clothing and candle shop.
I went in immediately searching for a cobalt blue candle. I wanted the largest one I could find with 3 wicks. I was smelling them and the smells were vivid and I found one I wanted.
Then I was standing near the checkout and there were some long single chain necklaces. I searched thru them until I found a long gold chain with a feather charm on the end. I went to grab it but as I did some other woman grabbed it too. We debated for a bit who had it first and she let me have it.
So I went back to the checkout counter and realized I had lost my shoes. I had been wearing white socks with colorful Nike sandals. I don’t ever do that. But seemingly someone took my sandals when I had taken them off debating the necklace issue.
A guy who worked there confronted me asking where my shoes were. Then he said show me the bottom of your feet. He wanted to see if I had been walking in the grass in my socks. When I raised my foot it was covered in grey dirt not green.
Then I started talking to a guy standing in line in front of me and he was making a payment on something that the store was charging him interest on. He had a large check that he showed me was written out for $3333.”
One thing I’ve found to be almost always be true is that if you have a dream about a shopping mall, the dream usually is going to be talking about how you have been mauled in a business, career, or financial sense.
Looking for a candle implies you are always trying to look for the light in a business situation and usually you are able to sniff out what is right. You have to compete with other people who may be onto the same thing, but usually you can convince others to see it your way. Looking for a candle implies you always try and look for the light in the business situation and usually are able to sniff out what is right.
You have to compete with other people who may be on to the same thing, but usually you can convince others to see it your way.
Cobalt blue usually would go with mental activity and speaking out loud according to the chakra system if I looked at the concept of blue in a broad sense.
You can usually sniff out what is good and is likely to lead to change (smelling the candles and three is the number of change as there are 3 wicks).
I like the interpretation of the golden necklace with a feather being having valuable intuitive ability that you can bet your neck on (the necklace) and that can take wing(the feather).
The debate with the woman indicates the you can usually convince others to see it your way for your own advantage.
Socks are usually protective as are sandals in getting you to where you need to go. It is interesting that these are white socks. White is the most spiritual color that there is.
The whole thing about the socks and the grass and the dirt and the Nikes I believe indicates that you are willing to do what needs to be done and do not necessarily do things just to look good.
You sometimes and probably more often are more willing to do the dirty work (the grey on the socks) than to do things for your own personal growth (the green from plants on the bottom of your socks). You focus on getting the job done and not necessarily protecting yourself excessively and are willing to make yourself vulnerable to a degree.
The final image of the guy paying off the $3333 debt he was being charged interest on is perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of this dream. Money is energy in dreams. It can be money itself but it also can be energy that other people have loaned you in in this case.
The dream is emphasizing that you need to pay back the favors you’ve been given before they end up costing you too much. It could end up costing you more if people feel that you have not shown enough interest.
3 is the number of change and you have four 3’s. I believe the dream might be saying that if you change this aspect and pay off the favors early, it will lead to stability because 4 is the number of stability as there are four legs on a table, four legs on a chair, four directions, four seasons, etc.
This is a nicely done and well rounded dream about how to conduct your career/business/financial aspects of your life.
Feedback from the Dreamer
The dreamer gave me the following feedback:
“Steven-this is pretty awesome! I wanna show u how accurate. Hugely mauled over at work but also benefiting from it and competing not for the same position but to do the same work..long story and it’s incredibly draining has been for months. My intuition is always spot on especially regarding others’ intentions. I have a hard time verbalizing that and sharing my insights and hold back on speaking about it especially lately and even when asked. I always over exert myself and energy in order to ‘get the job done’ re: the dirt not green. The check for $3333 was interesting and I remember thinking he bought an engagement ring with it and was making payments. Although I did recently have a reiki session and now I’m wondering if I need to be repaying them or the universe in some way to pay it forward.”

A young adult woman dreamed that she and some acquaintances spent the night in a house. Her work supervisor’s boss was with them. They climbed never-ending stairs that were scary and increasingly narrow.
They arrived in a dark attic. They were exhausted and piled into bed to sleep. She later woke up within the dream and it was light out.
She could now see clearly in the room and was horrified. The room was filthy because it was covered with dirt and dust. She saw a dead mouse on the floor.
She walked to a bathroom. She saw a baby carriage. An overwhelming smell of urine pervaded the atmosphere like what you might smell in a bad nursing home.
She then saw a very large rat sniffing around the baby carriage. She worried about the baby. She started choking because the dust was so thick in the air. The dream ended with her intensely blowing her nose to get rid of the dust buried in her lungs.
This is a classic type of dream. Each character represents a part of the dreamer’s mind at the first level of dream interpretation. Her supervisor’s boss was a part of her that’s in charge of her overall work life, career life, or financial life.
There are several things that Freud said that were uncanny. One of them was that when there are stairways , it usually involves sex because going upstairs is rhythmic activity that ends in a climax.
There are many signs that the dream involved being sexually mistreated in the past. Climbing the stairs was harrowing, confined, and she felt horrified at some point in the dream. Also dust is “old dirt” that implies that the body was violated, i.e., the Biblical injunction that “to dust though shall return.”
The mouse was dead which indicated how it may have affected her instincts back then, i.e. she probably felt small and lifeless.
The baby carriage implied reproduction (sex). Water is almost always emotion in dreams. Urine is water that we no longer need, i.e., negative emotion.
The nursing home implied that this happened a while ago. The supervisor’s boss being involved signaled that it either happened in a work area of her life or was affecting the work area of her life now. At the end of the dream, the dream became dramatic and indicated the dust or “old dirt” was taking the air out of her, i.e., that it was taking the joy out of some area in her life.
Another uncanny image Freud talked about appearing in dreams was a rat, which often involved sexual mistreatment because it is an image of what the perpetrator is. All in all, the dream was implying that there was some sexual mistreatment that occurred in the past that was taking some life or joy out of the work area of her life.
Reaction and Feedback from the Dreamer
“Whoa my mind is blown. I have to ponder over this one for a while…your summary at the end nails it but it’s in such a way I never would ever have thought of it like that! Possibly sex related mistreatment in the way past that has influenced me even now to be getting in the way of something I could do to better myself career wise but hesitate based on the impact and dependence the trauma caused in me.”
A 32-year-old woman dreamed of an image of her face with a huge number of stitches which covered her face almost like a mask.
Her job was in security for a federal building. She had to thoroughly search each person who entered the building. It often was necessary to be assertive and even abrupt with difficult people.
In dreams, a mask is it defense that hides who you really are. She thought that she had to put on a stern façade which was not like her real personality. The image in this dream brings to mind the saying of “saving face.” She thought that to heal herself she would have to quit the job because it was covering who she really was.
She disliked the scars which the job forced on her personality. She felt the job was ruining the image she had of herself. Consciously, she felt the job was good paying and have good benefits; however, she knew that her subconscious would eventually insist she leave the job.

Steven G. Fox, Ph.D. Is the author of “Dreams: Guide to the Soul”
I am finishing my personal story and sojourn to health by putting MS into remission with the help of the universe/God. It will be my second book showing that dreams were an important part of that journey. My personal psychology enters into the picture a lot. I basically see years of physical abuse as laying the foundation for having the foundation for contracting the chronic illness of multiple sclerosis. Amazon will publish it first as an ebook. The name of the book will be something like MS Mission Remission: Healing Severe Chronic Multiple Sclerosis Against All Odds.
An executive dreamt that he left his former workplace which was a commercial building. As he walked outside it became a residential home like the house that his best friends owned. He walked to the house next door which was a thatched shanty like his bipolar ex-wife owned.
He decided not to go inside. He went back his former workplace and entered in a different and new doorway. The female vastly underemployed security guard was fastidiously checking through multiple papers to see if he could return.
The setting of the dream often indicates what issues the dream wishes to address. We know that this dream primarily deals with his work life because of reference to a commercial building. He was on disability for a year and was getting restless.
He did not feel that he could return to work fully. He was offered contract work on projects that he could work on from home, i.e., he could telecommute. The dream is screaming that he could benefit from working from home.
Each character in a dream represents a different part of the dreamer’s mind at the first level of dream interpretation. Men are usually associated with an action part of the psyche. Women typically signal an emotional part of the mind.
A house can represent the dreamer to some extent because it is the framework out of which the dreamer lives. In this dream, the different houses or buildings represent different aspects of his life, i.e. his employment, mental health and home life. The dream encourages working from home by showing the house of his two best friends he had growing up that married each other in life.
Marriage is a sign of integration of actions with emotions. He basically says no to depression by not entering the shanty since it was owned by his mentally ill ex-wife. The dream indicates he is integrating actions and emotions that are friends.
The female guard is the emotional part of himself that was concerned with his security. He was vastly underutilized like the security guard was. The dream is screaming that he needs to check his emotions, like the female security guard, to decide what projects to accept for his own security. The dream advises that he now should take a different approach to work, i.e., that he enter work through a new and different doorway.

A 38-year-old woman dreamt that a man considering her for part-time work answering phones was with in a row-boat. She dropped her smart phone in the water. Somehow the phone went only about a foot deep into the water. He grabbed the phone and he handed it to her. She took the phone apart and wiped the water out of it so that the phone was dry. The phone was fine and worked.
A businessman wanted her to only answer phones for him, but she was unsure. Her being surrounded by water with the boss indicated that how she navigated her emotions was key to her functioning in answering phones.
The good news is that the phone did not sink very far, i.e., the idea of answering phones for him might just float. The businessman rescuing the phone pointed to her business action part of her psyche being able to save the situation if she did not go too deep into her emotions. Her not becoming too emotional in her communications (drying the water from her phone) was vital to make the employment work for her.
My book at http://www.drstevenfox.com uses 40 principles to interpret dreams in a similar fashion to the dream above.
A 54-year-old woman dreamt that she was viewing a graduation class of all men from an auditorium seat. She was viewing this scene through the eyes of an aunt. All of the male graduates had their backs to her. There was one male graduate who was out of place because he wore casual and somewhat tacky clothing. She felt that the out-of-place graduate was like herself.
She recently started a job with a Wall Street brokerage. She was the trainer and supervisor of new stockbrokers who recently graduated from qualifying examinations. Almost all new trainees were men (or were very action-oriented women). She was older and felt out of place.
The male graduates in the dream mirror the circumstance of her training male graduates. That their backs were to her was a reflection of her feeling that they did not really listen to her. Her aunt was a stern businesswoman which she emulated at work. The out-of-place graduate was how the business action part of her psyche felt about the situation. The fact that he was out-of-place because of his clothing meant that she felt that psychological defenses (her clothing) were not sophisticated enough for the complex work situation she was in.

A 34-year-old woman dreamt that she had a baby prematurely at twenty weeks past conception. The baby looked like a little man. He looked like a mentor and manager at work that she deeply admired and tried to emulate. The baby was wrapped in a blanket with the ends of the blanket stretched and tied so that the baby was encased in a stretched blanket which hung like a hammock above the incubator.
The baby was not doing well. Finally, the baby had convulsions and fell to the floor. A doctor she liked told her, “Don’t worry, that happens here all the time.” She then heard an overriding voice that sounded like the mentor she admired that said, “I found God and sobriety.”
Dream 195 Interpretation
This women’s mentor took another job and left her workplace about twenty weeks ago. She had to do all the work she performed before and fill in for his position as well. She barely knew enough to do all the functions of her transformed position.
Her being the mother of a 20-week-old baby symbolized the birth of her new work position which was twenty weeks old. She felt that her mentor left his position prematurely before she learned all the necessary functions. The baby represented her new work psyche which she felt had been “stretched and hung out to dry” (similar to the baby in the incubator.)
The good doctor was warning her that she was likely to crash if she continued on her chosen course. The overriding voice from her mentor was advising her to avoid being addicted to work (since he said he found sobriety) and to be more spiritual (he said he found God.) She decided to heed the words of her subconscious. She decided to spend less time at work, look for a new job and pursue her spiritual interests.
A 30-year-old man dreamt that he was looking at apartments in the town where he grew up. The first apartments were all desolate and decrepit and did not look fit for human habitation. He came upon an apartment complex which was well-built. As he looked up at the multi-storied complex, he saw bird men sitting in a row on a ledge. These half human, half bird men were just sitting there inactive, with an occasional ruffling of feathers.
The dream shifted to him being inside one of these luxury apartments. He remembered trying to go into the kitchen, but a bird man blocked his way. He was then surrounded by bird men in the living room. The bird men began eating him.
Dream 191 Interpretation
His early life was confusing to the point that he ran away from home when he was twelve. He lived on the streets, staying with friends, most of whom lived in apartments. The early run down apartments in the dream were an accurate depiction of his early life which, of course, had a major impact upon him.
The high-rise apartments are describing his more recent development. He was a complex person who wrote poetry that was quite good. Birds can represent freedom, and he was a very self-reliant and independent man. The birds are inactive early in the dream. Flight is often indicative of spirituality. His spirit not flying was ruffling his feathers.
He did not have a job that he could tolerate. He felt compelled to write, but had recently stopped writing because of depression. The dream is saying that he wants to create (the kitchen is a place of creativity), but he had writer’s block. Not writing was making him depressed, it was figuratively eating him up.
A 60-year-old woman dreamt that she made her way to some fields towing a 5-year-old boy. She was accompanied by her sister and brother. The first field was a field of vibrant and green broccoli. The second field was full of vividly colorful and artistic exotic flowers. The third field contained a baseball diamond surrounded by a stadium which was still under construction. The area from second base to third base was so overgrown that a path was carved out of the overgrowth so that base runners could run without interference.
She then went with the small boy to a movie theater. An old man gave her a huge and finely cut green emerald. While handing the gem to her he said, “Being with people I loved was far more satisfying than going to work every day.”
The 5-year-old boy represented a relatively new part of herself, a new way of doing things. The emphasis was on action because the child was a boy. She noted that her sister and brother were pompous and stuffy. She was wanting to change these emotional (sister) and action (brother) parts of herself.
The different fields represented different areas of her life that she wanted to change. She wanted to eat more healthy foods (broccoli) and appreciate the aesthetics (flowers) more. The baseball field represented the game of life. Old growth was interfering with her advancement and she needed to carve a way to third base in her life.
She took the boy, a relatively new way of doing things, to a movie theater. A movie theater in dreams is usually a place where life review takes place. A theater is dark which underscores that it is a subconscious review of life.
The old man represented the wise old man archetype. This part of the subconscious typically gives advice and support regarding what actions are advisable for the dreamer. He literally gave her a gem of advice. The green of the fields and the green of the emerald emphasized that the dream and the advice given were concerned with growth. Her dream was saying that she needed to take care of herself (eat right), enjoy art and aesthetics more, and surround herself with the people she loved.
She decided to accept her daughter’s offer to have the dreamer live with her family in the country. The area was surrounded by fields. She decided to decrease her work schedule and focus on improving the aesthetics of her surroundings. Beauty, nurturing and growth with family you love, rather than work, were the relatively new areas (fields) of her life that she wanted to enjoy.

A 28-year-old man dreamed that he saw in his mind a huge amount of volcanic activity going on below the surface of the earth. He then saw himself near a field of geysers. The geysers were erratically with no predictability spewing huge sprays of hot water into the air.
Beneath the surface in this case meant that the volcanic activity was occurring within his subconscious. The fiery red activity he envisioned that propelled the heating of the water was his subconscious anger. Water is emotion. Red signifies intense emotion.
Hot water is often a hot temper. He was in therapy to change his tendency to erupt impulsively with anger in job situations. His unpredictable and explosive rants of anger adversely affected his career.

Below is a dream and interpretation from my psychologist private practice. The client is anonymous and biographical details were changed to protect the identity of the dreamer. The interpretation is based upon my book at http:www.drstevenfox.com
Dream 162: Let Your Hair Down
A 33-year-old woman dreamt that she was sitting in a room. A group of young adult handsome and dashing men came in and started to help her put on coat after coat, one on top of the other. After she was wearing three coats at the same time, the leader of the group announced that was enough, that she did not need any more coats.
She then saw herself and a female friend having a discussion. The friend unfurled her long hair and urged the dreamer to do the same. They next were sitting at a house of prostitution. They were simply viewers of the scene. Each man was receiving money for having sex with each prostitute. Each man did not enjoy the experience and felt forced to do it.
The group of young men were various parts of her inner heroic masculine. These parts typically are protective and encourage positive action. Clothing represents defenses as they are the outer shell we show the outside world. The number three (number of coats) is significant because it implies change. She did not like her current job and had sought out and interviewed with three other possible jobs that were interested in her. She did this as she was preparing for a written test at her current workplace. She had obtained the three job possibilities as defensive backups if she did not pass the test. The leader of the heroic masculine announced that she had sought out enough jobs for her security. The implication was to stop looking for more jobs and continue studying for the test. Her heroic masculine was concerned that she was devoting too much energy on finding backup jobs rather than studying for the test before her.
She worked in customer service. She felt like she was hired to screw customers over (the prostitutes) who did not appreciate it (she did not like the way she had to interact with customers). The dream was encouraging her to “let her hair down” emotionally, i.e., to be less defensive (the female friend unfurling her hair).
