Can dreams help you make decisions about moving or getting another job?

Being Conservative Is Hard on My Head

A 36-year-old fine arts professor dreamt that he was on the patio of a Mexican restaurant. There was a wasp’s nest above the kidney shaped bar. Suddenly, a wasp flew down and stung him in the head. The dream shifted to him listening to a waittress. She was telling him about a long sordid affair she had with a professor.

Dream Interpretation

This professor recently received job offers from colleges in Ohio and California. WASP also stands for White Anglo Saxon Protestant. I asked him which college was more conservative. He replied that the college in Ohio was much more conservative and he did not know if it would tolerate his avant-garde teaching style and research. I asked him what he associated with Mexican restaurants, and he replied California. I asked him what was the biggest mistake he ever made in his field, and he replied that he regretted a decision not to attend a college in California. That she, the waittress had a sordid affair with a professor indicated that his emotions (the waitress) had been untrue to his intellectual decisions (the male professor)—this was highlighted by the fact that he regretted not going to college in California/

The dream voted in the direction of the college in California. His subconscious exclaimed that a conservative atmosphere was hard on his head and thinking. A restaurant in a dream nurtures one psychologically, and the dream is saying that, for him, California is much more likely to be nurturing.

The female waittress is a part of his work emotions. In dreams, a waittress is often seen as “one who waits.” He told me consciously that his biggest career mistake was not attending a learning institution in California. The waittress is talking about an emotional mistake with a professor. The dream is warning him about making sincere and solid emotional connections. The dream is screaming that he needs to attend a learning institution in California.

What could being chased in dream by a killer mean?

dreams-about-being-chased

Dream 436

A woman dreamed something was chasing her in a dream that wanted to kill her.

Dream 436

This is a common dream. Often the thing that is chasing you is your own shadow. We reject the Shadow and want nothing to do with it and so we run away from it.

We think of this Shadow is being aggressive, but not necessarily. Anything you have rejected or even not used is probably in your shadow. If I decided not to become a priest, there’s a priest in my Shadow.

Many times the shadow is chasing a person in their dreams because we do not consciously want to recognize it. Often the shadow is trying to get your attention to show you that there is some part of the shadow that you may want to use that could be helpful in a given situation for your survival.

Each character in a dream is a part of the dreamer’s mind at the first level of dream interpretation. Death in dreams usually means change. It means that a part of you needs to die psychologically, not literally.

What this means is that there’s a part of your personality that needs to change– that needs to be moved down your priority list of parts of your mind and personality to use. Part of your personality needs to die so that another part of your personality can be moved up the priority list and use some more or maybe even you might use a part of your personality that you’ve never used before.

So the upshot of all this is that your Shadow probably is chasing you to try to get you to use a part of it to help yourself, but you don’t want anything to do with it because you completely reject your Shadow and run.

Usually the solution, that I have found helpful in therapy, is to have people consciously say to themselves that they’re going to turn around and face the thing that’s chasing them the next time they have a dream like this. If you keep repeating this each night before you go to sleep, there’s a good probability that it will happen. The subconscious responds to repetition.

What can a ghost, furniture, and a house mean in terms of relationships in a dream?

tmp_31058-living-with-ghosts1444986176
Dream 409: The ghost of relationships past

A woman had the following dream:

“I need guidance if possible on what this dream meant..

So I dreamt I was not a ghost but invisibly present in my ex and I’s home, which is just his home now. And I noticed little upgrades, for example I thoroughly noticed little ottomans that were black and white stripe, three of them, and also noticed a very high techy fancy massage chair, very similar to the one the gentleman I was dating recently has in his home. That was the whole dream. Very odd, can anybody give me clarity on this one?”

Interpretation

I would suggest that at the first level, the ghost may represent the observing ego part of yourself.

In this case, I think it is very hard to separate the first and second levels of interpretation so I’m going to mix the two together. The first level is within the dreamer’s own psyche. The second level is interpersonal.

The house usually represents the dreamer because it is the framework of which one lives. Furniture usually represent what supports you in your life since furniture supports your body. In this case, I think this particular house because you and an ex lived in it more specifically represents the relationship part of your life.

I think the Ottomans being black and white to me suggest it is more clear what you want and what you don’t want in a supportive relationship. The dream is giving high grades to relationships that are supportive of a modern and soothing relationship. It may also be giving recognition to the idea that the next relationship needs to be modern and physically supportive.

This interpretation may only work in certain universes and is limited by my limited experience which includes my not personally knowing you.

The dreamer later confirmed that the interpretation “sounded about right.”

What do office buildings, suits, and restrooms mean in a dream?

Delicious-Cinnamon-Caramel-Apple

Dream 407: Eating Forbidden Fruit

A woman had the following dream:
“I had a dream that I was in a huge office building with many floors, offices etc. I was just trying to go home, but first find a restroom. I kept ending up in offices where there were people dressed in business attire and I didn’t have my top on…Trying to squeeze through, but they wouldn’t move. So rude!

I finally found a hall. Relief. I was walking to find a restroom, then I see a sitting area with a table on which was a plate of caramel apples with nuts. Yum! I picked one up and took a bite.

Then 2 ladies to the side shook their heads and fingers, no…I put it back and continued….exhausted! WHAT I DETERMINED: I am never going to fit in, no matter how I try to reveal my true self and good things are not for me! Well, I won’t accept that! Any other interpretations? I’m very open to your analysis.”

Interpretation

I am going to be sounding like a bit of a preacher and I don’t mean to sound that way but here it comes. The setting in a dream usually indicates what the dream is going to be about. It starts out in a commercial office building that has many floors.

Usually in a building the different floors can represent different levels of consciousness. So I am just saying that there are people who have many different ways of looking at things that may be at variance with your level of consciousness.

When you are looking for a restroom in a dream, that usually indicates that there are things that you need to get rid of that no longer serve you. One of the things that you probably need to change is being more careful about who you open yourself up to.

Clothing usually represents psychological defenses in dreams because that’s what we show the rest of the world. The people are dressed in business clothing which means that they are defensive and about commercial and business interests. You do not have a top on which indicates that you are probably risking yourself by opening yourself up in that environment.

Each character in the dream is a part of your psyche and women tend to go more with emotions. I think the women are disapproving of your eating the apple because part of your emotions realize that your effort to open yourself up to very defensive people is well meaning but is not going to work out very well probably. Trying to get psychological nourishment in that environment (eating the apple) is ill fated and not likely to work out no matter how sweet it may look on the outside (the caramel).

If it were my dream, the lesson would go something like, “I have to be more careful about who I expose myself to.” You mean well, but you want to make sure that the people you are talking to are at least potentially open to what you have to offer which sounds like it probably is a lot. One does want to put pearls in front of swine–it will annoy the pig and dirty the pearls.

What does a handicapped man with canes mean in my dream?

tmp_14995-dream_of_future954998894
Insight from Dreams

Dream 399: The best place to look for insight  is often within yourself

I dreamed that I walked with canes in both hands. I was on the television show and I was being encouragedby the moderator to write about my experiences.

My interpretation

I had multiple sclerosis for 15 years starting in 1991. I had a severe case that eventually was diagnosed as primary progressive MS, the worst form of multiple sclerosis MS that you can have.  I wore a brace on my right leg  and  used a cane  and had to use a wheelchair to be transported about the airport  onto an airplane.

I went through a radical medical treatment which in combination with alternative methods and with the help of dreams sent the MS into remission. I use both Eastern and Western techniques because I believe that when you have a major chronic illness like multiple scerosis, you have to throw everything you can at it. I believe that some of my methods may help others with MS and also may generalize to other chronic illnesses in some cases.

I think the dream was encouraging me and publicize it on a mass market basis because of the involvement of television. I think the images of the canes, which I no longer use, were in the dream to remind me of the remarkable transformation.

The name of the new book will be Mission Remission: A Man’s Method of Finding Ways to Send a Chronic Illness into Remission

What does it mean when you find money in a barn for the family you babysit for?

Getting Energy from Doing What You Love
Getting Energy from Doing What You Love

Dream 390: Old MacDonald had a Barn Full of Energy

A woman had the following dream:

“I dreamed that the family I babysit for (I am friends with the mother) had lost like a friend or family member and a very large sum of cash was owed/given to them. The family drove me to the place to pick it up because they needed help getting it. We go to this farm looking space and I walk into the barn/ware-house type building. It was only being lit from the natural lighting coming from outside but it was enough for me to see this huge trunk in the middle of the room that i needed to use to put the money in for the family, there was huge wads of cash and single bills scattered about the floor. I filled up the trunk as much as I could, and left the rest there, as I made my way back to the family’s car. Just because I was the only one in there taking the money for the family, it felt in a way like I was stealing, but i was only doing what I was told to do, I think I felt odd being the one having to go get the money instead of one of the family members doing it themselves, but they said they needed me to help get it for them. When I got to the car, a man who was following me, walked up to us (tan, dark hair and handsome; wearing overalls), said sorry he was not in the room with me to help out and he had work elsewhere to do, and he brought me the remaining cash that was for the family. Then we all drove away.”

My Interpretation

In dreams, money is energy. The barn is a natural and I want to say innocent place where your instincts (animals) are nurtured.

It sounds like you want to give all of the instinctive energy you can to the family you babysit for and want to give even more, but hold back wondering if you should, but then say it is okay because that is what I am supposed to do.

You get the energy free of charge from the universe by doing what you do for this family and you even get paid for doing it (no reason to feel guilty about being paid). The heroic action part of yourself feels that you could give even more energy to this family because it is nothing but good. What a country!

The tall, dark and handsome man is the representation of your own heroic masculine archetype which is often the initiator of therapeutic action, of things that are good for you. This part wholeheartedly wants you to feel uninhibited in giving personal energy to the family (the energy of the universe is supplied to you without your asking for it and this is a good thing for you and for the family).

What do pets and an evil-sounding voice mean in some dreams?

Shadow Knows Best
Shadow Knows Best

Dream 355: Let It Go

“I just woke up from a dream at 3:06 when I looked at the time. I dreamt I was in a room so familiar with a door open, with a furnace, a lot of boxes, and tossed aside stuff. I had a friend over and a kitten, but that’s not what spoke to me in my dream.

It is when I walked into the room of boxes and next to the cold furnace…my roommate’s dead dog Lily. My buddy! I told my whoever was in the room to come to me, its my dog. I wanted to see if she could see her to.

I heard a meow. I looked to my left. My poor cold underground cat, my baby boy Kidd. I cried in grief but yet happy to see him.

My full attention was on him. He felt cold and a bit damp. Not what I wanted him to be since I found him barely alive in the rain one night. I cried loving him just giving him attention.

I said, “I got my wish. I got to see you again. Just wish you guys were back with me.” Then (Here’s the weird part) a voice came from inside him.

A male voice. Calming, gentle and yet again familiar. He said, “Its time for Kidd Lily and Jack (or scrap) to return now. But remember you’re still with us.” I asked him “do I know you?” He laughed a bit deeply and it worried me.

I hugged my dear cat again wishing he’ll be fine. It hurt to say goodbye again. He continued to laugh then “POOF.” I woke up as they vanished.

I’m curious. Who could that voice be? For months I had wished to have Kidd back. That voice gave him back for a few minutes…You can’t bring back the dead but you can still see them in dreams.

Thank you voice. My wish still came true cause of you. I just hope you’re not evil. My best friends deserve the best.”

Interpretation

I believe that the voice was probably his Shadow. We usually think of the shadow as being negative and aggressive and want nothing to do with it. That is why the shadow talks to him through his beloved cat, so that he might accept what it says.

It asked him to do something he did not want to do, to let go of his pets and decrease actively mourning for them. Owners are usually emotionally close to their pets. That is why parents usually represent our affections.

He tries to reassure the dreamer that he could let go of them because they will always be with him in his subconscious. When we make major changes in life, it is usually due at least partly to the shadow.

Males usually go more with action parts of your mind and that is why it is a male voice that comes out of the shadow, because it wanted him to take the action of letting go. The voice becomes somewhat mischievous and almost evil. That is because we almost always wonder if the shadow is evil incarnate.

Lack of acceptance of the shadow is a danger. The danger is that it has no contact with other parts of the personality that would keep it in line. The shadow is usually only dangerous when it does not have other parts of your mind to limit it. If other parts of the personality are not there, it becomes excessive and monstrous.

My dream interpretation method is described in my book at http://www.drstevenfox.com

What does a young woman and an old lady carrying your girlfriend away mean in a dream?

tmp_6868-illusion-878881958Is this a beautiful young woman or an old lady? It depends upon your point of view.

Dream 350: My Love Gets Carried Away

An adult man dreamed that his girlfriend was being carried away by a young woman and an old lady. Something kept him from being able to reach his girlfriend to stop them from carrying her away.

Interpretation

Each character in the dream can represent a part of the dreamer’s mind. Women tend to go with the dreamers emotions. Young attractive women typically represent beautiful emotions.

An old lady is typically thought of as being a Crone which is an archetype of wisdom in old age and experience. An archetype is a pattern of thought that is repetitive throughout human consciousness. This dream is about how the dreamer’s emotions could get carried away.

He seemingly fears losing a lover after he has invested all of his emotions in her. His greatest fear probably is that this would happen and there was nothing he could do about it. It sounds like he is worried about losing the love of his life.

What Does a Fox Mean in Dreams?

A White Spiritual Fox
A White Spiritual Fox

Dream Image 294: I thought I would explain what my namesake means in a dream. First off, animals represent our instinctive drives. A fox is a wily cunning strategist who thinks outside the box. As such, native indigenous people often associated the Fox with the trickster archetype.

The trickster is a major archetype or pattern of thought in dreams. He typically makes impossible situations work by going outside what has been officially authorized. He bends the formal rules to satisfy impossible sometimes dictatorial expectations, i.e., he/she is tricky.

He is a clever sharp intelligent playful and flexible artisan who designs ways to get around onerous rules. The Fox frequently defies historic conventions for the good of humanity. There is a charming Apache legend that the Fox was responsible for bringing fire to people.

In the story, the Fox breaks the rules of the universe by somehow stealing fire from fireflies. Again, one would think that such a feat was impossible, but the trickster fox somehow makes it happen. As a punishment for his theft, the Fox was never allowed to use fire for himself. His deed ended up helping mankind but consigned the benefactor thief to the cold.

One never wants to forget the importance of slang or common meanings in dreams. It should also be remembered that “a fox” can represent an attractive woman/man. To be called “a fox” is to be called an intelligent tricky and good-looking beneficial manipulator.

The color white is the most spiritual color there is. A white fox is a spiritual master cleverly working within, but not strictly according to, the laws of the universe. I rather like my namesake.

My Attempt to Change Died

Dream 280: Change Died
baby-found-alive-at-chinese-funeral-home-2-days-after-being-pronounced-dead
A 48-year-old woman dreamed that she bought the house of her son’s mother-in-law. When she arrived at this house, there was a dead baby in a casket with large funeral candles on each side of the casket.

Interpretation

This woman was hyper-critical of her son. His mother-in-law had a troubled background similar to his mother’s personal history. The mother-in-law was, nevertheless, relatively calm, more diplomatic, and less critical than the dreamer.
A house can represent the dreamer because it is the framework out of which one lives. That the dreamer bought the house indicates that the dreamer is aspiring to be a different person, to be more like her son’s mother-in-law. The deceased baby is not good news.

Each character in a dream represents a part of the dreamer’s personality at the first level of dream interpretation. A baby represents a new part of the personality or psyche that the dreamer tried to develop. So a baby represents personal growth on the part of the dreamer.

That the baby is dead signals that her attempt to be different, to be more like the calmer mother-in-law, failed. That it was an attempt to change was highlighted by the funeral candles. Candles imply fire, and fire represents change because fire changes matter into energy.

It is perfect that they were funeral candles. Funeral candles are typically unlit. The unlit candles emphasized that no change had occurred. That it is a funeral scene gives some hope because the dreamer saw her lack of change as a real loss. The dreamer is in mourning which suggests that being more like the mother-in-law personality-wise was something that the dreamer really wanted.

But Mom…I Feel a Movement in the Force

13.-yoda-2_big

Dream 264: An eight year old boy dreamt that Yoda, the wise little old man alien Buddha philosopher from the movie Star Wars, was throwing all personal care items, like soap, toothpaste shampoo, etc., from the top of his mother’s bureau onto her bedroom floor.
Interpretation: He objected strenuously to his mother insisting that he regularly brush his teeth, wash his hands, comb his hair, take showers, etc. He was using a very creative version of the archetype of the wise old man to deliver a message. An archetype is a pattern of thought handed down through the generations by human consciousness.
Archetypes are propelled in culture and can be up to twenty to forty percent of the dream’s content. Jung thought we each had a personal subconscious which was connected to an overriding collective unconscious. This collective unconscious was created by culture and sustained and passed on by human consciousness.
Children most often have dreams of desire or want which are dreams of the way they wished life actually was. This creative child had the desire that wise Yoda would talk some sense to his mother. Moreover, the wise Yoda should cast away the personal care items so that his mother could finally see that her son’s protests about maintaining personal hygiene were correct.
The wisdom of the universe was dramatically expressing the child’s wish that he be freed from brushing, washing and cleaning. His dream desired that his mother finally see the prudence of his cleanliness protests. In his dreams, he felt that he did not need no stinking toothbrush. Further, he had Luke Skywalker’s advisor prove his point of view.

You Are So Far Gone!

images(2)Dream 263: A 19-year-old man dreamed that he was in a parked car at night. One of his friends from high school, David, tapped on the passenger window. He asked the dreamer to come out of the car.

The dreamer proceeded to the back of a car and simultaneously saw his best girlfriend from high school and his worst and most evil girlfriend walking hand in hand down the sidewalk in front of the car. When the dreamer went to the back of the car, David hugged him and said “You are so far gone!”

Interpretation:Being in a car parked at night means that you have been subconsciously passive. Night time goes with inactivity and passivity. Darkness usually represents the subconscious while the brightness of day represents more conscious and more active parts of the psyche.

Each character in the dream represents a different part of the dreamer’s mind or psyche. Men tend to go with more active parts of the mind while women usually represent more emotional parts of the psyche. He was being beckoned by an active part of his psyche, David, to be more active.

Two characters in a dream hugging indicates that those two parts of the psyche are integrating. The dream wanted him to integrate action into his life more.

The good girlfriend represented more positive emotional parts of himself while the evil girlfriend represented his shadow emotions.

He was very resistant to recognizing and using shadow emotions in his life. In therapy, it was clear he needed to use some of the aggressive shadow emotions because these emotions end up being your “get up and go.” It was a good sign that his positive emotions (the good girlfriend) was holding hands with shadow emotions (the evil girlfriend) because this indicated some beginning integration.

This statement that “You are so far gone!” was actually a compliment. It meant that his new outlook of being willing to be more assertive in seeking his goals was firmly established. He would never return to being his old self.

Like a Rhinestone Rooster

rhinestone rooster

Dream 261: A 28-year-old woman dreamed that she and other airport security were holding back a crowd of faceless people who were coming through the walls of a terminal liquor bar. She then envisioned the image of a rooster arrayed with sparkling jewelry and rhinestones. When she paid rapt attention to it, the rooster died.

Interpretation: She was an airport policewoman. She was bored with her job. She had a few drinks each day after work.

Each character in the dream is a part of the dreamer’s psyche at the first level. Faceless people usually represent parts of the mind that the dreamer does not know. Her superego or conscience is worried that her drinking to reduce her boredom may be unleashing more unruly parts of her mind.

The message of the rhinestone rooster is clear. The rooster is over-adorned to the point of being ridiculous. The dream is dramatically saying “Don’t get too cocky or it could be the end of you.”

She recently felt conflicted because her supervisor praised her work while she internally felt bored. She felt bored, but the dream may be warning her to not go along with her instinct (the animal instinct, the rooster) to show off (which may be the attitude of her subconscious toward her considering quitting her job). This latter view is speculative because it is at the second or interpersonal level of dream interpretation where accuracy drops because only the dreamer has full knowledge of details at the second level.

Dream 256: When I Get That Feeling, I Need Spiritual Healing

angel-09-250140612_std(2)

Dream 256: A 52-year-old woman dreamed that she had sex with a Catholic priest. She then saw the image of a Catholic nun. She then saw the image of a female Reike energy healer that she knew. This healer looked amazingly attractive and had glorious angel wings.

Interpretation– This dream is all about spirituality. She was raised Catholic. Her having sex with a priest indicates that she wants to actively integrate spirituality into her life (men are associated with action parts of the psyche while women tend to go with more emotional parts). The nun image was present because she emotionally felt she needed more spirituality in her life.

The female Reike healer had an amazing life story. She spent seven years in a wheelchair before healing herself with energy work. The image of the healer with angel wings is numinous (inspiring transcendental sacred awe in the beholder). She was amazingly attractive because she was an ideal woman, an anima figure, which is associated with healing. She wanted an active and inspired spirituality that helped heal people. The dream was symbolic of spirituality instilled in her youth that she wanted to activate to heal others through Divine power.

owning-a-dogDream 255: A 28-year-old woman dreamt that her abusive boyfriend hit her dog over the head with a shovel. The dog was dead. He was burying the dog. She wanted to stop the burial because the dog might still be alive.

Interpretation– Each person and animal in a dream represents part of the person’s mind. Animals typically represent basic instincts. Dogs in particular usually represent internal tendencies to be loyal and protective. The dream was saying that her experience with her abusive boyfriend had damaged her ability to feel protected and loyal towards men. That the dog might still be alive indicated that her trust of men was damaged, but that she might be able to heal from this traumatic experience.

A Messy Affair

images(4)
Dream 250:A 42-year-old man dreamt that he was being held down by his wife while a large mare urinated massive loads of urine on his face.

Interpretation– He was debating whether to return to a long-term affair. He did not want to leave his wife because of his young daughter. He felt conflicted, but felt that his life was entwined with the woman he was having an affair with. He thought it was likely that he would not stay married to his wife if he did not have some outlet for his sexuality.

Horses often represent female sexual power. The wife in his dream was his emotions, as a significant female partner and especially a wife represents primary current emotions. In dreams, a person, animal, or spirit is a part of the dreamer’s psyche. Men tend to go with actions while women go more often with emotional parts of the mind.

Water is almost invariably emotion in dreams, and urine is negative emotions. The dream is screaming that he is forcing himself to endure negative emotions to experience female sexual power (the horse). There is a price to pay emotionally for being involved in the affair.

Dream 243: Follow the Golden Serpent

Snakes Signal Transformation Snakes Signal Transformation

A 34-year-old woman dreamt that she was in the house where she previously was married. There was a reunion of the men she had known and dated in her life. She remembered that she was supposed to take koolaid out to the yard for the men that had been in her life previously.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a small black snake dart into the house. She then saw herself in the kitchen preparing a meal. All of the sudden she saw a golden snake raise its hooded head towards her.

The serpent went to the front door and then turned toward her. The cobra snake looked directly at her. It seemed to smile as if urging her to follow the serpent out of the house.

Dream 243–Interpretation

A house can represent the dreamer because it is the framework of which she lives. The house in this dream was the house where she was married to an extremely abusive man. She had a history of being in abusive relationships.

The koolaid in the dream is liquid and liquids tend to be emotion in dreams. The dream was literally saying that she “drank the koolaid”and regarding reality as presented to her by abusive men. The black snake darting into the house represented negative change.

Snakes are one of the few animals to completely shed their skin and so represent transformation or change. That the snake was black and sneaky indicated that the changes that occurred within this marriage (the house where she lived when married to the abuser) were negative as black tends to go with depressed or negative emotions. The golden snake is an entirely different story.

The golden snake as presented in the dream is almost majestic in his actions and seems beneficial. Gold or yellow goes with the solar plexus chakra which is strongly related to self-esteem. That she was in the kitchen preparing a meal indicated that she needed to find new ways to nurture herself.

Food in a dream is psychological nurture and the kitchen is a place of creativity. She needed to follow her golden snake into the future to keep her self-esteem. An animal or snake is instinct, and the dream is going out of its way to show that it is her instincts that are telling her to get out of the relationship

Flatlining and I Feel Fine

tmp_heart-rate-monitor-500x312-907663147Dream 241: Flatlining is Not Always Bad

A 62-year-old woman dreamt that she was on an acute care ward because she had a heart attack. She was watching the monitor to which she was connected and saw it “flatline.” She realized that she died. Strangely, she felt overjoyed.

Dream 241–Interpretation

She dated a boyfriend who was ambivalent about leaving his long-term cohabitant, who did not love him. His current live-in girlfriend was using him for his money. The dreamer was frustrated that she could never get him to see that it was in his best interest to leave her and dwell with the dreamer.

The dream used a heart attack to show her heart was broken. The machine was giving a reading of the condition of her heart. The flat line in this case indicates stability and harmony as it is not fluctuating wildly.

The fact that she died means that her old way of handling matters of the heart died. She decided to assert herself and tell him exactly how she felt. He responded positively and their relationship changed in a major way. She was overjoyed with their new relationship which was now filled with meaningful and truthful discussions.

DREAM 240: Stop Hurting Your Boyfriend and Get a Job

A 28-year-old woman dreamt that she was teleported to Pakistan and met a Pakistani woman in a tent. The Pakistani woman was very kind, attractive, and personable. They talked in the tent for a long time. The dreamer saw images of lips all around her. She then saw the Pakistani woman kiss her on the cheek.

The dream then shifted to her being a passenger in a helicopter piloted by a policeman. They went over major mountains until they arrived home safely.

Dream 240–Interpretation

The dreamer had a Pakistani woman friend who was emotionally mature and considerate. The dreamer recently was inconsiderate and hurtful towards her boyfriend. The images of lips all around your indicated that she needed to be more careful in what she said. The Pakistani woman kissing her on the cheek indicated that she emotionally wanted to integrate the Pakistanis woman’s qualities (emotions) into her own personality.

A policeman often represents the heroic masculine archetype. The heroic masculine is the part of a dreamer’s personality that typically effects therapeutic change in the dreamers life. A police officer also represents the superego or conscience to some degree. She felt guilty that she lived at home with her mother and had no job while her mother work hard at a low paying job.

Mountains often represent obstacles in the dreamers life. The challenge that the dreamer had to surmount was getting a job. Males are typically action figures and the heroic masculine is almost always very helpful.

The dream indicated that the action part of herself, the male heroic masculine, was going to help her surmount the dreamer’s goal of getting a job. She was getting ready to fly in a controlled and very practical way. She could decide exactly where she wanted to land, which is the reason a helicopter was used by the dream.

I am finishing my personal story and sojourn to health by putting MS into remission with the help of the universe/God. It will be my second book showing that dreams were an important part of that journey. My personal psychology enters into the picture a lot. I basically see years of physical abuse as laying the foundation for having the foundation for contracting the chronic illness of multiple sclerosis. Amazon will publish it first as an ebook. The name of the book will be something like MS Mission Remission: Healing Severe Chronic Multiple Sclerosis Against All Odds.

Chucky Tries to Get Lucky

Chucky tries to get luckyDream 239

A 16-year-old teenager dreamt that she was driving a white car. Next to her on the seat was Chucky who was a malicious and torturous puppet. She felt like she could stay friends with him and he would not hurt her as long as she treated him a certain way. She did not want to get involved with him, but did not want to insult him either.

Interpretation

She was bisexual. On the basis of this dream, I asked her if she found herself preferring girls more now. She indicated that indeed was the case. She then talked about how an acquaintance that she really didn’t know very well asked her out for a date when she was sitting in her car at a grocery store.

The boy was seen by her peers as repulsive and no one liked him. She let him down easy and made up some excuse. She was careful not to offend him.

She felt that she had to handle her sexuality in a similar way in the sense that she now preferred girls, although being bisexual this preference would change from time to time. She felt even though she now preferred girls that she had to treat a boys that were interested in her a certain way or face consequences. She was hurt too many times by men which might explain the torturous Chucky puppet character. It is interesting that it was a puppet because the part of her that related to males felt like an imposter to some degree at the current time.

What is the meaning of fire in a dream?

Dream 234: Descending Into Hell

A 28-year old man dreamt that a pet cat was attacking and chewing on his neck. The scene then shifted to a large pit. He was standing to the side of a platform that was being lowered into the bowels of the pit. There were many people stacked on top of one another sideways with their feet toward the dreamer.

He eventually saw that the platform was descending into hell. Fire raged all about them. A great sucking force was also starting to pull him down into the ghastly pit. He resisted with all his might and reached up to his wife who was at home in bed. She refused to help him.

Dream 234 Interpretation

Family pets are associated with affections. Dogs tend to go with men. Cats tend to go with women. His wife was angry with him to the point that she could bite his head off.

The people on the platform he recognized in his own words as parts of himself “that needed to go to hell.” Feet are a supportive part of the body.  The dream was emphasizing feet to show that providing psychological support to himself and his family (a wife and two sons) was a central issue.

Burning Change
Burning Change

Fire indicates the need for change as fire transforms matter into energy. He had many controlling and intimidating parts of himself that he needed to extricate from his psyche. These parts developed in response to abuse from his father and stepfathers. The dream makes a point of indicating that these threatening parts “sucked” and threatened to ruin the marriage (his wife was in bed at home). In any case, his wife had it with him and he would have to change through his efforts and not rely on her to pull him through.

You Cannot Go Back

house-on-fire11196420330

Dream 225: You Cannot Go Back

A 52-year-old woman dreamed that her earlier house was on fire. She wanted to go back to get some of her old things. A male fireman would not let her go back inside.

Dream 225–Interpretation

A house can represent the dreamer to some extent because it is the framework out of which one lives. Fire represents change because it transforms matter into energy. The dream is screaming that she wants to go back to some of her old ways before she engaged in therapy.

The fireman is male specifically because the dream is using the male action part of her psyche to emphasize that it is more about how she does things than it is about feelings. In dreams, males are associated with an action part of the psyche. Female characters in a dream usually represent an emotional part of the mind. This is not absolutely so, but is usually the case.

Check Emotions at the Door

http://www.miamiguardservice.com/images/cctv-security-miami.gifcctv-security-miami(2)-1265073637

Dream 223: Check Your Emotions at the Door

An executive dreamt that he left his former workplace which was a commercial building. As he walked outside it became a residential home like the house that his best friends owned. He walked to the house next door which was a thatched shanty like his bipolar ex-wife owned.

He decided not to go inside. He went back his former workplace and entered in a different and new doorway. The female vastly underemployed security guard was fastidiously checking through multiple papers to see if he could return.

Dream 223–Interpretation

The setting of the dream often indicates what issues the dream wishes to address. We know that this dream primarily deals with his work life because of reference to a commercial building. He was on disability for a year and was getting restless.

He did not feel that he could return to work fully. He was offered contract work on projects that he could work on from home, i.e., he could telecommute. The dream is screaming that he could benefit from working from home.

Each character in a dream represents a different part of the dreamer’s mind at the first level of dream interpretation. Men are usually associated with an action part of the psyche. Women typically signal an emotional part of the mind.

A house can represent the dreamer to some extent because it is the framework out of which the dreamer lives. In this dream, the different houses or buildings represent different aspects of his life, i.e. his employment, mental health and home life. The dream encourages working from home by showing the house of his two best friends he had growing up that married each other in life.

Marriage is a sign of integration of actions with emotions. He basically says no to depression by not entering the shanty since it was owned by his mentally ill ex-wife. The dream indicates he is integrating actions and emotions that are friends.

The female guard is the emotional part of himself that was concerned with his security. He was vastly underutilized like the security guard was. The dream is screaming that he needs to check his emotions, like the female security guard, to decide what projects to accept for his own security. The dream advises that he now should take a different approach to work, i.e., that he enter work through a new and different doorway.

Dreams Can Blow Your Mind

Molecular Thoughts

The Whole Enchilada

Some dreams have more psychological significance than others and are what Dr. Carl Jung called “Big Dreams.” These dreams involve major conflicts which are often recurrent. Your subconscious keeps trying to offer solutions to the struggle, but the conscious mind, for one reason or another, either does not recognize or accept the dream world’s recommended resolution to the conflict, i.e., the plan to solve the conflict “blows the dreamer’s mind.”

The principles to interpret a dream are in the book at http://www.drstevenfox.com

Killing My Disability

tumblr_inline_mn2negb8mu1qz4rgp91795425

Dream 222: Killing the Idea of Going On Disability

A 42-year-old man dreamt that he was walking with his 8-year-old daughter down a path. They came upon a rattlesnake that looked threatening. He killed the rattlesnake and gave the rattlesnake’s rattlers to his daughter which she used as a play toy.

Dream 222–Interpretation

He was an engineer for many years. He quit when his anxiety became unmanageable after he was given an exceedingly critical supervisor. He went on short-term disability. He decided for many reasons not to go back to engineering. He then went to college to become a physician’s assistant.

He did not like the effect disability had on his emotions nor did he like the example it was setting for his children. Each animal, human, creature or spirit represents a part of the dreamer’s mind at the first level of dream interpretation. The path represented his path in life.

Snakes in particular represent change, as they are one of few animals that completely shed their skin. In this case, it signaled the massive change in family life that the disability threatened to entrench. The dream was saying thst he needed to change his path in life. He frankly killed the idea of going on disability.

His daughter in this dream represented the Divine Child archetype which were his hopes and dreams. He decided to go into a healing profession which was the medical field. It is notable that snakes are also often associated with healing (think of the two snakes encircling a staff which is the symbol for the American Medical Association). His giving the rattlers to his daughter to play with as a toy suggested that he would even find these massive changes in his life fun.

This dream was interpreted using the principles in the book at http://www.drstevenfox.com

Angel Message

archangel_raphael21
At the height of my worst multiple sclerosis (MS) symptoms, I asked my wife to have a dream about how I should handle my MS. The next morning my wife described a dream in which an angel sang four rules that I needed to follow:

(1) Be non-judgemental. This rule was primary  and covered 70 percent of what I needed to do to improve my symptoms.
(2) Show inner beauty with the emphasis on emotion.
(3) Mirror the earth (follow natural cycles like getting up with the sun).
(4) Glorify the transfigurement. This was the most spiritual part of the message. The emphasis was on the product and not the process. I believe now, in hindsight, that it meant be thankful for the positive changes and the resulting increase in function.
Recalling these rules, which I lived by, gives me chills even today. It is more than fifteen years later and the MS is in full remission.

Science Dreams

1793BE34-DC3C-46B6-BF27B6E745016856_article1209348005Many scientists, including Einstein, were affected significantly in their work by dreams. What follows is one of a multitude of examples:

“As a young mathematician in the 1950s, Don Newman taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology alongside rising star and Nobel-laureate-to-be John Nash. Newman had been struggling to solve a particular math problem: “I was … trying to get somewhere with it, and I couldn’t and I couldn’t and I couldn’t,” he recalled.”

Later that night, Newman had a dream in which John Nash appeared to him and told him the solution. Newman submitted a paper to a mathematics journal based upon this solution which was published. By the way, John Nash was the mathematics genius upon which the film “A Brilliant Mind” was based.

This process of using dreams to answer questions is called Dream Incubation which is described in my book, Dreams: Guide to the Soul in chapter 34 which is at http://www.drstevenfox.com

That Idea Just Might Float

drop-water-iphone

Dream 219: That Idea Might Float

A 38-year-old woman dreamt that a man considering her for part-time work answering phones was with in a row-boat. She dropped her smart phone in the water. Somehow the phone went only about a foot deep into the water. He grabbed the phone and he handed it to her. She took the phone apart and wiped the water out of it so that the phone was dry. The phone was fine and worked.

Dream 219—Interpretation

A businessman wanted her to only answer phones for him, but she was unsure. Her being  surrounded by water with the boss indicated that how she navigated her emotions was key to her functioning in answering phones.

The good news is that the phone did not sink very far, i.e., the idea of answering phones for him might just float. The businessman rescuing the phone pointed to her business action part of her psyche being able to save the situation if she did not go too deep into her emotions. Her not becoming too emotional in her communications (drying the water from her phone) was vital to make the employment work for her.

My book at http://www.drstevenfox.com uses 40 principles to interpret dreams in a similar fashion to the dream above.

Don’t Turn Your Backs on Me

tmp_19251-images(2)961672836Dream 218: Don’t Turn Your Backs on Me

A 54-year-old woman dreamt that she was viewing a graduation class of all men from an auditorium seat. She was viewing this scene through the eyes of an aunt. All of the male graduates had their backs to her. There was one male graduate who was out of place because he wore casual and somewhat tacky clothing. She felt that the out-of-place graduate was like herself.

Dream 218—Interpretation

She recently started a job with a Wall Street brokerage. She was the trainer and supervisor of new stockbrokers who recently graduated from qualifying examinations. Almost all new trainees were men (or were very action-oriented women). She was older and felt out of place.

The male graduates in the dream mirror the circumstance of her training male graduates. That their backs were to her was a reflection of her feeling that they did not really listen to her. Her aunt was a stern businesswoman which she emulated at work. The out-of-place graduate was how the business action part of her psyche felt about the situation. The fact that he was out-of-place because of his clothing meant that she felt that psychological defenses (her clothing) were not sophisticated enough for the complex work situation she was in.

Where’s the Meat?

Dream 217: Where’s the Meat?
tmp_28757-images(3)-1742485467
Learning to Love Yourself

A 38-year-old woman dreamt she was a thin and starving cat. She saw a dead cat. She as a cat began to eat the dead animal. There was hardly any meat on the bones.

Dream 217–Interpretation

Family pets often represent affectionate feelings with cats being associated with female affection and dogs being associated with male affection. The dream indicated that she was affection starved. Eating in dreams often means the person is trying to make something a part of them. Meat, in this dream, represents substantial feminine affection (since it was meat from a cat).

Eating in a dream often signals that the dreamer is trying to incorporate a quality of character. Her husband paid little attention to her. Her eating a cat as a cat indicated that she was trying to incorporate affection into herself.

It was not working very well because there was almost no meat to it. This dream was mainly about self-love. It can be, as Whitney Houston sang, “the greatest love of all.”

Why Won’t My Pony Lie Down?

Taming the Pony
Taming the Pony

Dream 216 :Why Won’t My Pony Lie Down?

A 19-year-old coed dreamt that she was going from bar to bar and was socializing. She returned to the dorm with a small pony that followed her wherever she went. The pony insisted upon standing on the bed with all four feet and would not lie down which made it virtually impossible to sleep.

No matter what she did, the horse would not lie down and go to sleep. She then realized that horses can sleep standing up. When she went to college the next day, she saw government officials and police coming out of the Admissions Office who proceeded to run after her.

Dream 215—Interpretation

The first question I asked her was whether she was partying too much with which she agreed. Horses represent female sexual power. She wanted to study but was engulfed by all the attention she was receiving from men.

Her late night activities made it difficult to get any sleep. She could not get enough attention and went out night after night (thus, that horse would never lie down). She gave herself some vague hope that she could both rest and carouse around (the horse sleeping while standing idea). She was in danger of losing her academic scholarship and was worried (represented by the police pouring out of a college building).

Be Less Defensive

A Knight in Shining Armor Needs to Throw Down His Shield

A 28-year-old man dreamt that a knight was defending himself against a powerful opponent knight. He could not see his nemesis very well. The raging knight was attacking women and the dreamer himself with a sword. The dreamer defended himself with a shield. The shield was bulky and he was making little progress against the errant knight.

Suddenly, the dreamer had the thought that if he were less defensive, things would go better. In a dramatic moment, the dreamer threw his shield down and faced his fear of the other knight. The other knight immediately quit fighting and took his shiny armored helmet off. Upon closer examination, the other knight was a handsome man with blonde hair and blue eyes. The dreamer discovered the reason the man was attacking women and the dreamer. The man was wounded and was taking his anger out on them. The dreamer realized that the wound needed to heal.

Dream 215–Interpretation

The dreamer was generally unsuccessful with women. He came on too strong. When his disproportionate advances were not reciprocated by a woman, he became angry and defensive and then ruined any chance of starting a relationship.

The dream dramatically states that his anger is directly related to his defensiveness. He needed to throw down his shield and get in touch with the heroic masculine part of his nature. That he could not see his nemesis very well meant that he had little insight into his problem. The dreamer was always mystified by women rejecting him because he knew his nature was essentially chivalrous and noble like the heroic masculine knight.

The dream showed that underneath his rage, he himself was wounded. For the first time, he realized that he needed to heal his wounds, that he needed to work on his resentments in therapy. It was a major breakthrough in therapy.

Dream 214: The Unpredictable Girl

A 36-year-old man dreamt that he moved by operating mechanical extensions that were fastened to each limb. He had a blue-eyed blonde-haired 3-year-old girl on his lap. Every so often the little girl would suddenly twist to the left which greatly inhibited his motions.

Dream 214–Interpretation

The dream was critiquing his mechanistic movement through life which was inhibited by unpredictable unconscious desires. Because the dream’s main character is a man, the dream is announcing that the dream is mainly about actions versus emotions (usually associated with female characters). The child was a representation of the Divine Child archetype.

The Divine Child usually contains our hopes and desires for the future. The Divine Child often has blue eyes and blonde hair and is below 11 years old in Caucasian cultures. That she was a little girl meant that his unconscious emotional (the movement was always to the left which usually means movement toward the subconscious) twists hampered his progress through life.

He was being told that desires contained in his inner Divine Child were getting in the way of smooth and effective action. The dream wanted him to have more control over his actions. His unconscious wishes were throwing twists into his plans.

Jung and Freud

I prefer Carl Jung’s dreamwork approach with psychotherapy clients rather than Freud’s. Freud looked at where the person was now , and tried to find what happened in the past to make the person who they were now. Jung looked at where the person was now and used dreams to predict what was likely to happen in the future for that person. People are much more interested in the future.

Wild Horses May Take Me Away

Horsepower
Horsepower
Dream 211: Wild Horses May Take Me Away

A 20-year-old woman dreamt that she was in the hospital after recently giving birth to a baby girl. She dreamt that her attractive and social girlfriend was now giving birth to a baby boy. She previously had gone on double dates with this friend. The dream shifted to her driving to a barn located near a highway. The barn was brown. It had three horses within it. She went and took care of the horses. She later returned to the hospital where her friend was. She wondered if she closed the gate.

Dream 211–Interpretation

The dream started out the scene with a hospital which implies that some healing needs to take place. In reality, the dreamer recently gave birth to a baby girl. Her remembering this during the dream was juxtaposing her role as a mother with her role as a woman. She was being told that a new action part of herself (the baby boy) was being born in relation to her being a heterosexual woman because the baby boy’s mother was associated with her femininity.

The brown barn represents earthiness and being grounded, especially because it was brown. Horses often represent female sexual power. The number three indicated that some change in her definition of herself as a woman was taking place. That there were three horses emphasized the strength of her feminine powers (horsepower). When she tended her instinctive sexuality, she had to do so alone, without her child. She wondered if she had let her desires run wild because she worried about closing the gate after the horses had already left the barn.

I Will Not Be Like My Mother

Dream 245: I Will Not Be Like My Mother

A 58-year-old woman dreamt that she was walking down a long hall with a mirror at the end in a house where she was married for a long time. Her deceased mother suddenly appeared and claimed the house was hers. The dreamer successfully defended her claim to the house. She then saw a hearse back up to the house where three men loaded the casket into the vehicle. She noticed that the casket slide to the right going into the hearse.

Dream 245–Interpretation

A house, especially where the dreamer lived for a long time, often represents the dreamer because it is the frame out of which the dreamer lived. The dream pointedly directs her to take a long reflective look at herself (the long hall with the mirror at the end). Her Mother introject appears (the mother instilled in her mind) and claims dominion over the dreamer which the dreamer will not accept.

The hearse implies that the mother in her died which in this dream meant that her mother introject, her internalized mother, was prioritized lower and would no longer be the major influence in her life. Three is the number of change as three people in a relationship almost always creates change. Even the casket sliding to the right is significant, as the right is associated with conscious change versus subconscious (left) change.

Her mother no longer being a major influence in her life would have real daily living consequences which would be positive. She had worked in therapy to escape the mostly negative influence of her mother. This dream indicated that her work in therapy was successful.

Put Yourself Out in the River of Life

fish in river of life

Dream 210: Be Ye Fishers of Men

A 37-year-old woman dreamed that she was sitting on a couch looking at a fish that was stuck on a wall above an opposite and opposing couch. She then saw her best and extroverted friend who magically made the fish come to life. The friend then carried the fish to a stream in front of the house. The friend released the fish into the stream.

Dream 210–Interpretation

Fish represent subconscious energy. Water is emotion. The dream was saying that her emotional energy had hit a wall. A house can represent the dreamer to an extent as it is the framework out of which the dreamer lives. The extroverted friend was from her high school and she was very extroverted and active. The dream was asking her to use the emotional extrovert within herself to release seemingly dead energy and to return to the river of life.
