A woman dreams that she went through surgery that she did not want to have. The surgeons left metal in her body. She thought the dream was weird and wondered what it could mean.
When doctors and hospitals are involved, the dream almost invariably is about healing. Surgery is dramatic healing which has a downside and benefits. Hopefully, the benefits outweigh the downside.
Metal left in the body can indicate new strength or it also can represent hard feelings/rigidity. She was a young woman in her twenties who had recently gone through a dramatic therapeutic intervention in the sense of detoxing. She also went through therapy and was given medication.
The dream, I believe, was a reflection of her not liking the intense treatment she went through. The experience had “tested her metal.” The metal left behind was her hard feelings over the ordeal, but the experience had made her stronger (strong as steel).

A woman dreamed that she was in a mental institution. She desperately wanted to escape. She finally took off running for the door.
A charge nurse intercepted her and gave her an injection. The dreamer was later allowed to stroll the hospital grounds with an attendant. The staff seemed genuinely concerned about her and she could feel that they wanted to protect her, i.e., “Once I understood in the dream that I wasn’t meant harm I got over any negative feelings.”
In real life, the dreamer was surprised that she was in a mental institution because she recently had some major physical issues.
The dream was occurring in a hospital so it was probably about healing of some kind. The contrast is between physical healing and mental healing in the sense that the hospital is mental, but the dreamer had physical issues going on. Also, none of the healers, the doctors and nurses, talked to the dreamer.
The only intervention is physical (the nurse gives her an injection, a treatment intervention associated with pain, when she tried to escape). Nevertheless, the dreamer did feel that the hospital staff intent was primarily protective. The dream was probably talking about any possible emotional issues she may have been having because of the need for physical treatment, i.e., “Once I understood in the dream that I wasn’t meant harm I got over any negative feelings.”
It sounded to me like the dream was addressing the need for her to accept physical treatment, that the doctors and nurses were not trying to harm her when administering sometimes aversive treatments. Doctors can sometimes be insensitive about how they are affecting patients emotionally. There are frequently issues of accepting unpleasant but necessary treatments.

The 16-year-old teenager dreamt that he was in Africa. There was a huge pile of mostly dead bodies in a large pit. They found a ten-year-old black girl who was mostly just a head and a spinal cord. The dreamer helped the doctors put the girl in an ambulance and accompanied her to the hospital, convinced that she could be saved.
At some point on the trip to the hospital in the back of the ambulance, the girl turned to the dreamer and said a single word which was “Mum.”
Interpretation– At the first level, each character in the dream represents a part of your psyche. Men often go more with an action part of the mind, while women represent emotional parts of the psyche. The darker the skin, the more soul is being summoned.
The setting of the dream is often telling you what it is going to discuss in the dream. In this case, it was literally telling you how, at the age of sixteen, life was pretty much “the pits” (the deep hole full of bodies). Dead bodies show that parts of the psyche have radically changed or “died.”
As part of the massive changes occurring within the dreamer, the dream is trying to point to what needs to change emotionally (it picks out a deformed girl). The girl is immature (below the dreamer’s age) and consists of only a nervous system, a brain and a spinal cord. This is the dream’s way of saying that the dreamer is too much in the head and intellectual, and not dealing with emotions.
The fact that there are doctors and an ambulance indicates that this part of the emotions is in need of emergency healing.
The single word “mum” is important. The dream was saying that the dreamer is not speaking out emotionally enough, i.e., that “mum” is the word. It is speculative, because I do not know the dreamer well enough, but I wonder if there is something significant occurring in the dreamer’s relationship to mom=mum. In any case, it is highly likely that the dream is calling for the dreamer to express more soulful emotions and leave many old parts of the mind behind. It specifically wants the dreamer to speak out in a meaningful and emotional way more.
This dream was interpreted using principles from my book, Dreams: Guide to the Soul which is at http://www.drstevenfox.com
