What do wolves mean in a dream?

Predators on the Chase
Predators on the Chase

Wolves are predators. In dreams they represent the savage predatory influences we are sometimes subjected to. In the dream below, a mother’s protective instinct for her family is expressed.

Dream 301: Protecting my Family

A woman dreamt that a buck deer was leading his family away from wolves chasing his family. As the wolves drew closer, he decided he would have to fight the wolves while his family escaped. He carried on what seemed like an endless fight with the wolves while his family escaped into the thicket.

Interpretation

Dreams like to use words as a concrete pun when it can to get the dreamer’s attention. Why did the dream pick a deer family when it could have picked many other species? I believe it was because a deer family would emphasize how “dear” family was to this mother.

Animals represent the dreamer’s instincts many times. The father buck is a hero. Specifically, he is an instinctive variant of the heroic masculine archetype.

In women, this archetype represents an action part of the dreamer’s mind that she uses to protect loved ones. His motto is “to protect and serve.” It is willing to die to protect loved ones. This archetype is almost always good news when it shows up in dreams.

What this shows is this mother’s endless willingness to fight for her family’s sake. The buck was willing to die if only the family escaped the predatory savage influences that sometimes surface in the world. It is a noble and self-sacrificing archetype responsible for much of the good in the world.

What does a deer and a mailbox mean in a dream?

A deere my dear
A deer my dear

Mailboxes have to do with messages we receive from others. A deer is a beautiful image that relates to instinctive affection or love. How these two play out in a dream is illustrated below.

Dream 309

The dreamer was a woman who went outside to get the mail. There was some snow and ice on the mail. There also were paper plates with little kid writing on it and. Wrapped inside the plates were parts of a maimed baby deer someone stuck in her mail box.

She looked up to explain what was happening to an inquiring passing neighbor. The neighbor mystifyingly and impatiently queried “already”? The neighbor became angry for some reason and the dreamer told her she was calling the police.

Interpretation

In dreams, water is emotion. Snow is cold water, i.e., cold emotion. This dream involves the mail which is where we receive messages from others.

Many letters to start out with “dear.” There literally is a maimed “deer” in the mailbox. It is written on material that typically involves nurturance, (plates usually hold food).

The messages looked like scribbling written by little kids. The neighbor apparently was seen by her as criminally insensitive so that she called the police. The trend of this dream implies that she were hurt by an insensitive childish thoughtless message or remark by someone she thought was a friend (her old lawyer?) who suddenly delivered an unkind message without realizing it.

The dreamer later verified the heart of this interpretation. She had just received an unfavorable message from a custody court involving her young children. She was dissatisfied to the point that she decided to get a new lawyer.

One surmises that the court and/or lawyer hurt her feelings to the point that he was no longer “dear” to her. Dreams often make a concrete almost clang association between words (deer=dear by analogy). She was advised to use dream incubation to help clarify her feelings toward the new lawyer.

Dream incubation is described in chapter 37 of my book, Dreams: Guide to the Soul which is at http://www.drstevenfox.com
