Dream 415: Relationships Can Make Me Crabby
A man reported the following dream:
“I’m on a school boat trip again. There are a few crabs. They creep up my legs and pinch in my boy bits with their claws. I’m not mutilated but it certainly hurts.
Towards the end of the dream I feel something moving in my pants. I open them, and it’s a huge crab crawling up, it’s over a foot / 30cm across. I’m thinking “this could be nightmare material” when I see it appear slowly. Most of all I’m surprised how it makes it’s way through that very narrow space, those legs are incredibly strong!”
He also added:
“The last crab was a different model, like a king crab with a rather small shell and very long legs.
The first crabs were normal, with a big shell and small legs.”
It is difficult not to get somewhat Freudian in this dreams interpretation because the images occur close to his genitals, but I will try to be more exspansive than that. Freud and Carl Jung would both agree that the dream involves his inner instincts, your sexual instincts, because it is an animal and because of the location of where the crabs attack.
First of all, I suspect the dream is talking about what he needs to learn about sexual relationships because you are on a school boat trip. The school signals that it is going to be about what he needs to learn in that area. Boats float on water and water is invariably emotion. So the beginning of the dream is announcing that it is going to be about what he needs to learn about emotion in sexual relationships.
Crabs are very tenacious and these early in the dream crabs especially hurt him and hang on for a long time so that it is especially annoying. I wonder if the dream is saying something about getting hurt in intimate relationships because he may hang on to situations that hurt him too long.
A crabs have shells which could indicate that defensiveness in intimate relationships in this case. This is the case if the emphasis was mainly upon the size of its shell. If the emphasis was on the crabs inner body, which is soft, vulnerable, and in this case very strong, I feel the dream may be describing the dreamer. He may be emotionally sensitive on the inside and strong on the outside. He was, in fact, a tall and strong man.
Dreams have many levels to them. I always like to think of common sayings that may be in the dream. The thing I am reminded of is that “crabs” is the slang term for sexual diseases. Dreams frequently give advice. It is always good to practice safe sex…
